Netflix generates more contemporary content than anyone, but they’re dipping into the past to curate the great movies from the ’70s. These are the films that people like myself discovered as kids in the early days of when HBO premiered on cable. Bravo, I say. Here’s the preliminary list.

At the 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGAs) on Feb. 27 at L.A.’s Fairmont Century Plaza, special honorees will include costume designers Deborah L. Scott (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Rachael M. Stanley (Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Ally McBeal); Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Oscar nominee Angela Bassett, who will receive the Spotlight Award; and Bette Midler, who will be recognized with the Distinguished Collaborator Award.
Midler jokes with THR that the Costume Designers Guild award recognizes her “willingness to stand in front of a mirror for hours on end! What could be more delightful?” All kidding aside, Midler continues, “A great costume is like a second skin; you feel as if you belong in it. It’s very freeing because it provides so much information to the audience, and you don’t have to work so hard.”

As we’ve just posted our essay about Meryl Streep’s Burberry trench coat in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), it seems fitting we have a round up of the best coat related posts in the Clothes on Film archive. This is coats purely as outerwear too. So, even though lounge suit jackets are traditionally referred to as coats, here they stay as jackets. Likewise Victorian frock coats; that is a round up for another day. Click the image to read the article.
The plush fur-trimmed coat worn by Angelina Jolie as Christine Collins in 1920/30s set The Changeling (2008). Jolie referred to her costumes as “dolls’ clothes”, which is more costume designer Deborah Hopper’s unwavering commitment to the period than anything else.
Gwyneth Paltrow as middle class fashion icon Margot Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001). That toffee coloured fur coat is by Fendi, real mink and will set you back around $4,000 – if you can find one.

Marlee Matlin won the 1987 Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the beautiful but embittered deaf girl in Children of a Lesser God. Matlin lost her hearing when she was only 18 months old, but she grew up acting on the stage, where she was discovered by the film’s producers when she was still 19 years old. Children of a Lesser God was her first movie role.
Twenty-five years ago, the 59th annual Academy Awards took place on March 30, 1987, and I had an A-ticket to the show. I was 21 years and 218 days old when I received the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Well known and respected Hollywood costume designer, Theadora Van Runkle, passed away from lung cancer in West Hollywood on 4th November. She was 83.
Van Runkle essentially fell into costume design. While working as a fashion illustrator she happened to meet costume designer Dorothy Jeakins at a function who required a sketch artist for her upcoming project, Hawaii (1966). Van Runkle then took the job that Jeakins turned down as costume designer for Bonnie and Clyde (1967). This was her first experience in the industry. She may not yet have understood the finer realities of costume design (“I just stumbled through” Van Runkle later admitted) but she knew trends inside and out, instigating a timeless look for the film that stands up as a fashion classic today.

Just a few words to inform you all of Vanity Fair’s interesting looking Fashion in Film festival upcoming this weekend at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. We would say lots more but are too grumpy that Clothes on Film cannot attend (3,500 miles to travel is a bit much).
The event is essentially in honour of NY Fashion Week so all of the screenings are tied to that theme in some way or have inspired catwalk trends from the screen. However, the line-up is surprisingly diverse, featuring a few you may have seen, Eyes of Laura Mars (1978), Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965) and Qui Êtes-Vous, Polly Magoo? (1966) for example, and some you may have not, such as Jean Jacques Beinei’s cult thriller Diva (1981) and Hermès fashion house documentary Hearts and Crafts (2011).
All screenings take place at the Mad theater, New York.

Sharply tailored, violent, sexy and all-round immaculate HBO drama Boardwalk Empire hits British screens for the first time on 1st February (Sky Atlantic). For those who have not already seen the show, what will undoubtedly strike first is, thanks to costume designer John A. Dunn, just how beautifully turned out all the gentlemen in 1920’s set Atlantic City were. This is a time when being a real man meant wearing a deep red carnation on one’s jacket lapel and stiff collars to rival a neck brace.
Ruler of Boardwalk Empire is Atlantic County treasurer Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a former policeman turned corrupt politician running an alcohol bootlegging racket during prohibition. What Nucky wears is just as important as anything else he does on a day. Decked in burnt orange plaid single breasted suit, saffron silk shirt with detachable white collar, paisley tie and collar pin, plus two-tone brogues,...

Innovative costume designer for stage and screen, she won an Oscar and three Tonys
Theoni V Aldredge, who has died aged 88, could and did do anything with clothes, on Broadway stage or film; outfit Joe Papp's earliest Romeo and Juliet for $120 or promise embarrassed guys cast as showgirls in La Cage Aux Folles that they would never have to shave their chests or legs. More than 1,000 performers wore Aldredge clothes nightly on Broadway in 1984, in five different productions, and she raided each show impromptu, "policing", she called it, "to make sure the kids are all Ok". Broadway dimmed its lights on Tuesday to mark her death.
She was born Theoni Vachliotis, the daughter of the Greek army surgeon-general in Salonika, but emigrated to the Us, wanting to be "where there hadn't been a war". She had begun her lifelong doll collection, and maintenance of its wardrobe, as a child.

A real legend of the industry, Greek born costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge, has died aged 88 years old.
Designing for both stage and screen since 1950s, Aldredge was perhaps best known for her work during seventies era Hollywood on films such as Three Days Of The Condor (1975), Network (1976) and Eyes of Laura Mars (1978).
She collaborated with Ralph Lauren for The Great Gatsby in 1974, though ostensibly Lauren just provided shirts and some suiting, in which she sparked a high street fashion revival for the delicate, waistless shifts worn by Mia Farrow’s character Daisy. The costumes were made in less than two weeks – an astonishing achievement.
Aldredge also created some memorable ensembles for Ghostbusters (1984) and Cher vehicle Moonstruck (1987). Seemingly passionate to reflect the era in which she worked, many of her costumes, Sigourney Weaver’s batwing lamé dress and oversized cape coat in Ghostbusters and Faye Dunaway’s double split skirt in Laura Mars,...

Oscar and Tony award winning costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge has died. She was 73. In a career that spanned nearly four decades, Aldredge designed glitzy threads for hit Broadway shows such as "Dreamgirls," "A Chorus Line," "42nd Street," and "Gypsy." Perhaps the apotheosis of her sequins laden aesthetic was the outfits she designed for the transvestite protagonists of "La Cage aux Folles." She won Tonys for her work on "La Cage," "Barnum," and "Annie." On the big screen, Aldredge scored an Academy Award designing jazz age duds for Robert Redford and Mia Farrow's...
