There doesn't seem to be any need to worry that The Chosen will be cancelled on The CW, at least for a while. Three seasons of the show have already been produced, the fourth season is in the works, and the network appears to be committed to airing them. But what if the ratings don't meet the executives' expectations? After all, the episodes have already been released elsewhere. Could it be pulled, as other acquired series have been? Stay tuned.

If there's one thing I know for certain, it's that the makers of the 1992 teen comedy "Encino Man" — about an unfrozen caveman who becomes the most popular kid in high school — knew for a fact that one day, two of their stars would win Academy Awards on the exact same night for films about fatphobia and multiverses.
Yes, that much was obvious. Just like it was obvious that the kid who asked if you're supposed to eat lobster poop in "Mystic Pizza" and the basketball player who got grossed out by a Nosferatu in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie would one day win Oscars for co-writing a film about a mathematics super genius, and that the unnamed street punk who asked if his fellow hooligans preferred regular or menthol cigarettes in the first "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie would one day win an Oscar for playing a racist cop in a film about billboards.

Director Kevin Reynolds’ graphic, gritty desert combat movie is about a lost tank in the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Besides being 98 an unpleasant downer, it now reminds us that we got into the exact same fix just a decade after the Russkis threw in the towel. Cruel Russki soldiers commit atrocities against vengeful Moujahedin resistance, and there’s really nobody to root for. George Dzundza, Jason Patric, Steven Bauer and Stephen Baldwin endure a rough ordeal out in the dirt, hoping for the next war movie breakthrough hit.

There are always those actors whose name you don’t remember but you know their face well enough to say just where you’ve seen them and what they’ve starred in, and Erick Avari is one of the more famous among them since the guy has a list of credits that takes a while to read through. It also would appear that acting was something he might have predestined to do since his father ran two movie theaters and his great-great-grandfather was one of those that helped to pioneer Indian cinema. It’s true, his life could have gone in a lot of

Grimm's fourth season finally gets motoring with a great, entertaining episode that actually advances the plot. Here's Christine's review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.6 Highway Of Tears
To paraphrase Nick Burkhardt this week, “It’s back!”
Grimm treated us this week to plot development, some delicious dialogue, and the best laugh-out-loud line of the series so far. This was all a relief, particularly as we were all expecting the most awkward sex scene in TV history.
To recap, we discovered last week that Juliette must sleep with Nick in the guise of arch nemesis Adalind in order for Nick to regain his powers.
In fact, Juliette treats the whole situation with surprising good humour, and even a little sass. I mean, Nick has to find Adalind’s physical presence sexy enough to enable him to perform, but without enjoying it too much, presumably. That’s one a tightrope that our hero’s walking.

Rusty Beck (wonderfully played by Graham Patrick Martin) has been an integral part of TNT’s Major Crimes since, well, before the show even aired. He made his debut on the series finale of The Closer, and was brought back for the spinoff, and we’ve spent the last two and a half seasons watching his journey.
Last night’s episode was a pivotal one for Rusty, as he gathered the courage to come out to his fiends in the squad room, and thanks to out showrunner James Duff, it was handled without histrionics, and with humor and sensitivity.

It was announced this week that Michael Fassbender will be starring and producing Ubisoft’s movie adaption of Assassin’s Creed. That’s great news because among other things it means that the film hasn’t fallen into movie limbo. Now that a lead actor has been attached, Ubisoft Motion Pictures (the indie studio that Ubisoft created to turn their game into a film) is looking at getting a screen writer and a director on board. Meanwhile, nerds everywhere are asking themselves “so who else are they gonna cast in the movie?” Since it’s gonna be awhile before there’s an official answer, we’d like to offer up our wish list of who we’d want to see on screen.
Right off the bat we should point out that this article is particularly speculative because there’s been no word yet on which game the movie will draw from for its plot.

There are many, many lines you never want to hear when someone ends a relationship — “it’s not you, it’s me” is probably in the top 3. But, as we’ve seen in the past with movies revolving around doomed relationships, they tend to make a lot of money. Variety has just reported that Vivica A. Fox, Joelle Carter, and Ross McCall have been hired to lead the indie relationship comedy, titled — well, you know — It’s Not You, It’s Me.
Screenwriter Nathan Ives is making his directorial debut, helming a comedy that tells the story of “a thirty-something commitment-phobe who breaks up with the love of his life thanks to conflicting advice from his outrageous, inner voices — and says the only thing he can think of to soften the blow: ‘It’s not you, it’s me.’” Carter (Justified) will be playing the role of the ex-girlfriend, whose...

This past weekend, I had the marvelous opportunity to talk with Stargate’s Alexis Cruz, a lucky last-minute add to the Dallas Comic-Con line-up of featured guests. Now with Stargate Universe canceled, I know that fans everywhere are wondering what will happen to the Stargate franchise. Cruz and I discussed the legacy of the series and its possible future. Check out this excerpt from our conversation below:
SciFi Mafia: You are one of only two actors, the other being Erick Avari who played Kasuf, cast in the Stargate movie that also appeared as the same character in the Stargate television series, Stargate: Sg-1. How were the two experiences similar and how did they differ from one another?
Alexis Cruz: They were similar in that they were phenomenal experiences. Stargate was my first big, big film. I had worked with other stars before but Kurt Russell and James Spader and...

As we sat down to write the introduction to our list of notable film spin-offs, someone forwarded along a link to the big movie news story of the day: Tom Cruise announcing his plan to reprise his role as ultra-profane movie producer Les Grossman from the 2008 film "Tropic Thunder" in an as-yet-untitled comedy. Tom Cruise, in other words, is getting into the spin-off game.
So even though we're a week late in finishing this list inspired by "Get Him to the Greek" (more on that film in a bit), it's still plenty timely, and will continue to be as long as Hollywood exploits successful properties even after their original stars have moved on. Here's the elite company Mr. Grossman will be joining:
"Evan Almighty" (2007)
Original movie: "Bruce Almighty" (2003)
Spin-off character: Evan Baxter (Steve Carell)

Episode Title: "Victoria"
Written By: Kalinda Vazquez & Sonny Postiglione
Story: Christopher Chance (Mark Valley) is contacted by Gerard (Erick Avari), a bodyguard protecting Princess Victoria (Christina Cole) of the British royal family. Victoria's jealous husband has marked her for assassination following the revelation that she's fallen in love with Tony (Rey Valentin), a New York City ambulance driver.
Chance is forced on the run alongside Victoria and with the help of Winston (Chi McBride) and Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley), he must thwart the secret service agents that have turned against the princess and bring her husband to justice.
Risk Assessment: "Victoria" is far from my favorite episode of "Human Target," for two reasons in particular. First, I'm barely willing to accept that one secret service agent could find it justifiable to assassinate his protectorate for the sake of preserving the greater royal name, let alone the vast majority of the secret service team.

"Wrapped Up in Death" – The investigation into the shocking death of a museum curator, crushed by a falling gargoyle, takes a bizarre turn when Castle and Beckett learn that he isn't the first member of a recent archeological expedition to die. It turns out there was a legend inscribed over the burial chamber the team unearthed warning that "all who gaze upon the face of the mummy are doomed." Was the curator just the latest victim of "The Mummy's Curse"? And if so, what does that mean for Castle,...

Walter Koenig doesn't shy away from a challenge. Writing scripts is a tough gig. Getting movies produced, especially indie fare; not so easy. Writer-producer Koenig, however, waged -- and won -- a near-decade-long battle to bring InAlienable (2010) to the screen. A sci-fi thriller and legal drama, InAlienable follows the plight of a guilt-ridden scientist, Dr. Norris (Richard Hatch), who gives birth to an alien-human hybrid child, a child that then becomes the focal point of a legal case over whether it's a living entity with rights or an abomination that must be destroyed. Koenig -- beloved by millions of fans worldwide for his portrayal of Chekov in the original-cast Star Trek series and features -- co-stars in the film as Dr. Norris's bitter boss, Shilling, while other familiar genre names include Gary Graham, Marina Sirtis, Alan Ruck, Erick Avari, Richard Herd, and Courtney Peldon. InAlienable is out now on DVD from Anchor Bay,...

Ray and Tanya have almost an inverse relationship, even though they work together. When things look better for Ray, they look worse for Tanya. That's a fault on both of their parts, however, and only grew worse, after this week's episode, entitled "Doris Is Dead or Are We Rich or Are We Poor?"
At the beginning of the episode, Ray meets Jemma, his hard-to-please client from last week, outside a therapists office. The therapist (played by Eric Avari, Chandra Suresh from Heroes), is clueless that Ray is a prostitute. Jemma screams at Ray during the session, and he is forced to improvise, telling her that something about her is a turn-off. Jemma storms out, leaving Ray and the therapist sitting there, shocked.
Ray follows Jemma outside, where she is waiting for him. She pays him $500, thanks him, and walks away. Ray, having been on his lunch break, returns to the school,...

Even with MacGyver’s current 5 ½ season lead on Michael Westen, the lead of Burn Notice, is quickly rising to eclipse his cunningly creative predecessor. MacGyver was the master of minutiae and seemed to know the result of every possible chemical combination which, admittedly, is badass. But Michael Westen has a more complete combination of brains and brawn. MacGyver was more prone to running with creative escape routes while with Westen you can bet that when things get hairy he’ll throw his fair share of punches. The two may not occupy the exact same niche, but there’s enough overlap for the comparison. And “classic” television be damned, Burn Notice wins.
The CIA left Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) out in the cold and ever since he’s searched for person responsible for his burn notice, the pink slip which left him stranded with no job, cash or means of escaping Miami.

"Three Days of Rain" is an auspicious feature debut for writer-director Michael Meredith and a fitting opener for the fifth Method Fest, which spotlights independent films with an accent on acting. Inspired by the short stories of Anton Chekhov, Meredith has woven together a half-dozen portraits of contemporary lives-on-the-edge in this quietly searing drama. Presented under the aegis of Wim Wenders, the film deserves further festival exposure and could see art house action in the hands of the right distributor.
Opening with jazz strains, a disc jockey's mellow voice-over relaying storm predictions and striking shots of an unfamiliar skyline, "Three Days" introduces its six central figures, residents of Cleveland, through elliptical scenes. The seventh main character is the rain-drenched cityscape itself, shot in a moody blue palette by director of photography Cynthia Pusheck, whose elegant, compelling visuals are a crucial unifying element. Deftly avoiding a frequent pitfall of multiple-character studies, Meredith does not impose a uniform performance style on his cast, instead allowing each to find the pulse of the role. And in Meredith's strong script, every role is a gem of understated complexity.
Football great Don Meredith (the filmmaker's father) is a strong presence here, setting the tone as a cabbie who moves through his days with a restless melancholy. Reeling from a recent loss, he seeks comfort from strangers, but his blank, stunned sadness is met at every turn with self-centered dramas -- most strikingly in Blythe Danner's darkly comic cameo as one of his fares.
In the most direct expression of these stories' Old World roots, a tile maker (Michael Santoro) whose work is ruined by the rain beseeches God with a why-me lament and relentlessly pursues a widow (Penny Allen) who owes him money. Peter Falk plays another character seeking cash, but Waldo's search is chronic. A retiree on an endless pub-crawl, he repeatedly phones his son to finagle loans he'll never repay. Falk captures the duplicity, contrition and maudlin charm of the alcoholic with an incisiveness so real it's hard to watch at times.
While there are no easy answers for these characters, some provide more clear-cut rooting interests than others. Erick Avari brings a simmering intensity to the role of Alex, a well-heeled professional whose encounter with a man living on the street throws his entire life into question and fuels his growing resolve to choose kindness over convention.
But not everyone has that option. Two of the most affecting story lines involve characters who must endure cruelty that is anything but casual. As a developmentally disabled janitor being set up by his boss (Chuck Cooper), Joey Bilow creates a childlike character without sentimentalizing him. Tess (Merle Kennedy), a young heroin addict tethered to brutal circumstances, is a composite of delicacy and steely despair.
Commenting on one another but never intersecting, the vignettes are juxtaposed with increasing urgency, thanks in large part to the heartbeat-precise editing of Peter Przygodda and Sabine Hoffman. The running commentary of Bob Belden's jazz score and Lyle Lovett's DJ patter underscores the sense of connectedness, which culminates in a visual symphony of Edward Hopper images: near-empty diners and lonely rooms, new lovers about to face the morning. "Three Days" eloquently taps into the aching, resilience and battered hope at the heart of Chekhov's fiction.
