Talk about a movie where you just don’t know where to start! With The Darkest Universe, co-directors Tom Kingsley and Will Sharpe have crafted what I can only describe as my favorite, completely surreal, yet right down to earth, drama I have watched in 2016… Wait, no, in years.
As I have said previously, I am on a real Indie “hidden gem” kick right now and I was asked to review this movie suspecting that it would be right up my street. And it is. The Darkest Universe is an absolute gem of a movie for more reasons than I can explain, but I will try.

Hammer made a nice little comeback last year with The Woman in Black. While I wasn’t the hugest fan of the film, I dug the atmosphere it brought to audiences. It also felt like British Horror, something I admired even more. Hammer has created six audio dramas that vary from 30 to 45 minutes each and will be released in a digipack later this week. If you order the digipack, you will get the audio files immediately. You can also buy the tracks individually if you want to give one of them a listen. Between this and Tales from Beyond the Pale, it’s nice to see horror audio making a comeback. We have included toggles below which include synopses & links below.

Opening night film: I Declare War, a childhood parable about war and brutality, directed by Jason Lapeyre and Robert Wilson.
Closing night film: Big Ass Spider!, a raucous giant arachnid vs. the military flick, directed by Mike Mendez.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Tatsumi Trailer "Yoshihiro Tatsumi is a mangaka known for his gekiga style of alternate Japanese manga." Wish I knew what that meant. Director Eric Khoo...

We've just got our hands on the final DVD cover art for Dave Parker's The Hills Run Red (trailer), which stars an insanely naked Sophie Monk, Tad Hilgenbrinck, William Sadler, Alex Wyndham, Janet Montgomery, Mike Straub, Ewan Bailey and Danko Jordanov. Arriving on DVD September 29, the story centers on a film fanatic whose obsession with finding a complete print of an infamous slasher movie leads him and two friends into the backwoods where the film was shot. They realize too late that filming never ended -- and now they must survive a nightmarish onslaught or become part of the movie forever.
