The Sleepaway Camp series has been a longtime favorite of mine, as I’ve always found Angela Baker to be one of the more fascinating villains and cinematic serial killers the genre has ever seen. When we first meet her in the original Sleepaway Camp, she’s a precocious pre-teen (portrayed by Felissa Rose) who has endured one messed up childhood. By the time we are reunited with an adult Angela (Pamela Springsteen) for the next two sequels, she’s embraced her complicated nature through the "help" of some professionals and has evolved into the perfect camp counselor.
Far more decisively comedic in tone than their predecessor, both Sleepaway Camp II and III are a ridiculous amount of fun for anyone who grew up on a steady diet of slasher movies. They do a fantastic job of fully embracing and celebrating everything great that was happening in the horror genre at that time.

Many horror fans met Felissa Rose for the first time one sinister summer at Camp Arawak back in the early 1980s. Though perhaps best known for playing Angela Baker in Robert Hiltzik’s 1983 cult classic, Sleepaway Camp, Rose has portrayed a wide variety of memorable characters in the horror genre since the turn of the century. Her latest role, a deeply religious survivor in the rural town of Elwood in the age of a zombie apocalypse, is certainly no exception.
With Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard now available on Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay, we caught up with Rose to discuss her intense character, working with Billy Zane and Dee Wallace, Scream Factory’s Sleepaway Camp Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, and much more.
You worked with writer/director Harrison Smith in last year’s Camp Dread. What was your experience working with him again on Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard?...

A cannibal clan cheers on their elder to finish off a victim with a hammer: this pivotal scene from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre sounds like a horror story that would be told around the campfire in Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers. Tobe Hooper’s classic 1974 film and Michael A. Simpson’s 1988 sequel to the cult movie, Sleepaway Camp, are both featured in new Fright Rags T-shirts.
Now available from Fright Rags, the “Grandpa Does It Best” T-shirt showcases Grandpa Sawyer slumped in his bone-crowned throne while holding a hammer in one hand, similar to how he appeared in the 1974 film before trying to kill the tough-as-nails Sally Hardesty. Emblazoned on the back of the T-shirt are the words, “Grandpa Does It Best.”
Reminiscent of the Say Cheese and Die! R. L. Stine Goosebumps covers, the Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers T-shirt features four skeletons dressed as humans and lounging...

There are three kinds of sequels in this world. The sequel that continues the story of the previous installment in a series, the sequel that has fuck-all to do with the original and creates a completely new story in lieu of the absolutely workable earlier installment and sequels in name only. So I ask you where a movie like Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers fits in? Sure it continues the original story with its focal point still on Angela Baker though we now refer to her as Angela Johnson, but if you mean to tell me that Michael A. Simpson created a continuation story from the original Robert Hiltzik classic as anything more than a way to get exploitable elements on screen then you might not have seen Return to Sleepaway Camp, a true continuation of Hiltzik’s vision. When I watch Sleepaway Camp II I think of it as...

This is another Blu-ray release, that I wish existed a year prior. Last summer, we recorded a retrospective podcast series, covering the entirety of the Sleepaway Camp series, and could have really used a loaded, Uncut Blu-ray release of the first film. We made due with what was available, though, and now I can revisit Scream Factory’s new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of the film, with the image of the DVD still fresh in my mind for comparison. If you are interested in our retrospective look at the series in its entirety, you can check that out here. I’ve seen this movie at least a dozen times, and as many problems as it has, it still manages to entertain me just as much, each new visit. I know the ending is coming, and I know what to expect, but it still has that same impact it had on me as a kid.

Robert Hiltzik's entire movie career has basically been in telling one story, that of Sleepaway Camp. Hiltzik wrote and directed the original, as well as Return to Sleepaway Camp. So who better to discuss Sleepaway Camp's move to Blu-ray from Scream Factory on May 27 than Robert Hiltzik himself.
Hiltzik recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about some interesting aspects of this horror staple, which was released in 1983. "I was in graduate film school at the time and I wanted to do my own film," Hiltzik said, when discussing the origins of the movie. "I wanted to figure out what would get me into the marketplace the easiest. The path of least resistance. I figured dramas and comedies would be very subjective, but everyone likes a good horror film. And I figured shooting a horror film in one location would keep the budget modest. So I thought...

As a composer, I'm quick to acknowledge the role of music in setting the tone for a horror film, and while theme songs with lyrics and vocals can be just as effective as an instrumental score, there are definitely risks involved: along with clothing and hairstyles, songs tend to anchor a film to the year it was made, and as tastes change, a pop tune can be exposed as a quaint and silly relic of its decade. Then again, some of those tracks were pretty goofy to begin with, and nothing could have saved them. With that said, I love every one of these oddball themes to death (even the truly painful ones), so I'd like to share with you the best of the weirdest, straight from one of my more... uh, let's say “eccentric” party playlists. Let's rock! Fat Boys: “Are You Ready for Freddy?” (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,...

The last great beard in show business is gone. Zach Galifianakis shaves it off near the end of You Are Here. While films that pit notorious horror icons together to ‘face off’ are far from classic cinema, there is no denying that they can be fun if taken as the mindless entertainment they are intended to be. When Freddy vs. Jason was released, it surpassed expectations by grossing over $80 million domestically. The film almost spawned a sequel, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. The follow up never came to fruition, since Sam Raimi wanted to maintain the rights to the Evil Dead franchise. A year later, we saw another epic pairing with Avp: Alien vs. Predator, which also grossed an estimated $80+ million. Then, in 2007, we saw Avpr: Alien vs. Predator: Requiem hit the market. And, of course, who could forget the Oscar contender (sarcasm) that was Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys.
There are plenty of hoops to jump through in order for studios to bring icons from different franchises together to duke it out.

With guys like Fred Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Leatherface dominating the cinematic slaughter scene (the new Texas Chainsaw killed the competition this weekend), it’s easy for horror fans to forget about the little people. But, we at FEARnet embrace the little people and think that they deserve their moment in the spotlight just as much as the big guns. So, we have put together a list of underrated psychopaths in horror cinema who we would like to thank for their thoughtful contributions to the horror genre.
The Dentist
Corbin Bernsen does crazy quite well. His performance as a psychotic dentist who wants to rid the world of filth is what makes The Dentist as enjoyable as it is. The film itself is just Ok, but Bernsen's performance is great. Watch out for Mark Ruffalo in one of his first feature film roles. The Dentist 2 goes a little off the rails.
