A young boy is fleeing war after his father is killed. All alone in the world, he finds a treasure map that will change his life — and give him the chance to heal from trauma.
The plot of “Saleem” — Jordan’s first feature-length animation — is a universal story of the horrors so many children around the world face today, its producers say.
Screening out of competition in the Families and Children section of the 3rd edition of the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, it is a tale of hope and light in a world where darkness destroys the spirit of too many children.
“Saleem’s story is one of a journey of healing and self-discovery after trauma,” the director, Cynthia Madanat Sharaiha, told Variety in Jeddah.
She and her husband, executive producer Shadi Sharaiha, spent four years working with an international team of animators and consultants to...

Folding the intricacies of the human condition into everyday life in Jordan, director Cynthia Madanat Sharaiha (“Noor”) bows her feature debut “Saleem” in competition at the Annecy Animation Festival.
The film marks the first Jordanian selection for the festival and was selected as part of this year’s Contrechamp strand which includes Pablo Berger’s offbeat friendship study “Robot Dreams,” a Cannes Festival standout, alongside 10 additional titles.
Aiming to dismantle preconceived notions, Madanat Sharaiha calls on the tradition of storytelling prevalent in her culture to ensure a fuller perspective, parlaying the region’s quotidian routines into vivid, wide-eyed renderings of rambunctious and endearing children, their parents and the captivating provincial terrain.
“We’re a culture of storytelling, but our stories don’t always make it into the world. We wanted to tell a different kind of story, not portray the Middle East as romanticized, political or magical. Ours is a...

Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in Disney’s animated feature of the same name, is set to narrate a new documentary titled “Pencils Vs Pixels.”
Co-directed by Bay Dariz (“Hypochondriac”) and Phil Earnest, “Pencils Vs Pixels” is a celebration of 2D hand-drawn animation.
The documentary, which will have its world premiere at Annecy International Animation Film Festival next week, will explore the Disney-led 2D animation boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s which was soon eclipsed by the dawn of computer animation. But, as the film shows, a resurgence of 2D animation suggests there is still hope for the medium.
The documentary features interviews with the great and good of the animation world including Pete Docter, John Musker (“The Little Mermaid”), Tony Bancroft (“Mulan”), Jorge R. Gutiérrez (“The Book of Life”), Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”), Glen Keane (“Beauty and the Beast”), Tina Price (“Hercules”), Lorna Cook (“Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...

The Disney Renaissance was a time of great experimentation for the Mouse House — one that saw its animation division tackling all sorts of challenging material, from ancient legends spanning cultures around the world to decidedly dark and mature literary classics by Victor Hugo and Edgar Rice Burroughs. But with great daring comes the risk of committing equal-sized blunders, and that's just what the studio did when it decided to turn the tale of the real-life Indigenous American woman Pocahontas (a nickname passed down by her father) into an animated musical extravaganza.
That's not just the hindsight talking. "Pocahontas" earned a lackluster critical reception upon its theatrical release in 1995, with reviews arguing it was stunningly animated but otherwise lacking in personality. The film's reputation has only worsened over the decades thanks to its soft-peddling of the violence perpetuated by European colonialism, along with its rehashing of Indigenous American stereotypes. Adding insult to injury,...

I’ve got a couple of incredibly cool Red Sonja illustrations here created though a collaboration between Tom Bancroft and Jeremiah Skipper. As you can see, they show us what the badass sword-wielding warrior would look like if she were in a Disney animated film. I look at this art, and now I just want to see Disney develop an animated film based on this character. She would make one helluva badass edition to the Disney princess collection.

Comic conventions tend to be a thing you look forward to every year, like Popeyes chicken half-off day (actually a real thing) and Justin Timberlake's yearly SNL appearance. While every person is different in their motivations for going to a con, mine skew towards discovering new art and seeing great cosplay. Of course, my Pop figure hunt for Groot was also a priority. Alas, I did not succeed on that front, but no reason to be a downer. Here is my day at Wizard World Nashville in a nutshell.
Funkos Abound!
When I say I was searching for Groot, I wasn’t kidding. I walked around that floor at least 6 or 7 times over, just hoping to catch a glimpse of the ancient tree god, yet somehow came up empty. I found every other Pop figure I could have possibly wanted, but not Groot. I even entered a raffle to grab a homemade Groot,...
