Exclusive: Ugandan actress Tracy Kababiito, British-Nigerian actor Wale Ojo and Rwandan actress Isabelle Kabano are set to co-star in groundbreaking, pan-African Rwanda genocide drama Bisesero: A Daughter’s Story.
The production is being billed as the first major feature about the tragic events in Rwanda in 1994 to be told exclusively about and by Africans.
Between 500,000 to 800,000 people belonging to the Tutsi minority ethnic group as well as some moderate Hutu and Twa were killed by armed Hutu militias over the course of 100 days between April 7 and July 15, 1994.
Nigerian director Ema Edosio-Deelen will direct from a script which she is co-writing with award-winning Rwandan director and screenwriter Joël Karekezi.
Bisesero: A Daughter’s Story will recount the little-known true story of the Bisesero Resistance, in which tens of thousands of Tutsi led by an elder called Aminadabu Birara (played by Ojo), bravely fought off Hutu attackers.

Colcoa, the Los Angeles-based French film festival, will be hosting its 23rd edition in September, right before the start of the awards season. Created by the Franco-American Cultural Fund, Colcoa will also be showcasing a more contained lineup focused on film and TV at the Directors Guild of America’s newly-renovated venue.
The festival was previously scheduled in April but is being pushed to September 23-28 due to the renovation work being done at the DGA to upgrade the 600-seat main screening room with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technology.
Positioned after Cannes, Toronto, Venice and Telluride and right before the New York Film Festival and Mipcom, Colcoa will have the opportunity to be a Hollywood launchpad for key French movies, and will allow American buyers to test the potential of French series with a U.S. audience, said Francois Truffart, Coloca’s executive producer and artistic director.

At the start of April, a spattering of American and French journalists gathered, Champagne in hand, at the home of French consul general to Los Angeles Christophe Lemoine for the lineup announcement of the 22nd City of Lights, City of Angels film festival, which kicks off tonight with Eric Barbier’s Romain Gary biopic “Promise at Dawn.” It was the perfect setting to announce a film about the French writer, a former Los Angeles consul general himself, who managed to keep one foot in his native land and another in Hollywood, through both his diplomatic appointment and his marriage to Jean Seberg. Colcoa has been striving to strike a similar balance for the past two decades.
Initially commissioned as the flagship project of the Franco-American Cultural Fund — a joint project among the MPAA, DGA, WGA and France’s Sacem — Colcoa provides a week’s worth of French film premieres in the middle of L.

Screen investigates which films from around the world could launch on the Croisette, including on opening night.

Screen’s network of correspondents and contributors around the world have been putting out feelers to get a sense of what might or might not make it to the Palais du Cinéma or one of the parallel sections.
Just like the Oscars, this year’s festival is likely to unfold amid a politically-charged atmosphere. Beyond Trump and the rise of populism across the globe, France will be digesting the result of its own presidential election on May 7. The heist here is entertaining enough, but sluggish pacing and the lack of sparkle between the lead actors takes the shine off things
If the perfect crime caper movie should be as slick and effortless as a well-oiled machine, this French diamond heist thriller trundles along like a jalopy that is missing a few crucial cogs. Writer/director Eric Barbier ticks the right boxes – the brassy, swaggering score sounds like offcuts from David Holmes’ work for the Oceans series; the backdrop, an auction for a 137-carat diamond, is suitably glitzy. But the pacing is sluggish and, for all the glinting, multifaceted precious stones, there is little sparkle between conman and heist specialist Simon (Yvan Attal) and glamorous but conveniently credulous auction organiser Julia (Bérénice Bejo, rather out of her depth). The heist itself is devilishly convoluted, but entertaining enough. However, whatever momentum the picture had accrued is lost in an...

Eric Barbier, director of The Last Diamond: "This is the kind of film that has not been made for a long time. In France we have done quite a few of these heist movies in the past, but suddenly we seemed to have stopped doing them. I find the a bit sad." Although director Eric Barbier has signed an elegant and sophisticated thriller The Last Diamond his start in the business was with a very different proposition: Le Brasier, made in 1985 and set in the coal fields in the north of France in the Thirties. It was an expensive production which was so shunned by the public and some the critics that it took him a long time to get back in to the fray. It had consumed almost ten years of his life. He burst back with Toreros, set against the world of bullfighting and dealing with a relationship...

LONDON -- Brit indie distributor Metrodome has snared all U.K. rights to Eric Barbier's French thriller "The Serpent", the company said Friday.
The movie, starring Yvan Attal ("Munich") and Clovis Cornillac ("A Very Long Engagement") details the story of photographer who finds himself caught up in an ugly divorce while being visited by a ghost from his past.
The deal was negotiated between Wild Bunch's Carole Baraton, Metrodome general manager Sara Frain and the company's acquisitions manager, Kate Falconer.
Metrodome CEO Peter Urie billed the movie as "a tense and intelligent thriller" and said it was "a fantastic addition to our slate for 2007."
Metrodome's upcoming slate includes "Days of Glory", Sarah Polley's directorial debut "Away From Her" and Deepa Mehta's Oscar-nominated "Water".
