The wait horror fans had been enduring for a proper glimpse at the latest entry in the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Rise, had been torturous, but a first-look image was finally unleashed this week. We also have an official synopsis, and it sounds like a good time. Essentially, the Necronomicon unleashes the Deadites for some mayhem in an apartment complex.
Now, without even so much as a teaser for the film by the writing of this article, we don’t know what the “Evil Dead in an apartment building” idea will look like. Going by the synopsis alone, I can’t help but feel that the upcoming Lee Cronin film may have taken some inspiration from an Italian cult classic – Lamberto Bava’s Demons 2 – in which demons invade a high rise apartment building and quickly start turning everyone they come across into one of their horde. What for? Well,...

Happy Monday, dear readers! We have a brand new slate of home media releases to look forward to as we head into a new month, and there are some great films coming out on Tuesday that genre fans will definitely want to pick up. Rlje Films is finally releasing Horror Noire on both Blu-ray and DVD this week, and they’re also bringing home arguably the most talked-about horror film of 2020 as well: Rob Savage’s Host. Kino Lorber is showing some love to Dark Intruder with their new 2K Blu, and Code Red is giving us more reasons to fear the water with their Blu-ray for The Great Alligator.
Other releases for February 2nd include Satan’s Blood, Sky Sharks, Deadcon, and Hellkat.

If you grew up reading Darkside Magazine in the early 90s and regularly frequented your local video rental shop, as I did, you couldn’t help but know all about the UK VHS label Colourbox. Not a huge distributor, at least compared to others at the time, Colourbox were probably one of the most iconic – at least for me – VHS labels the UK had; and that’s mainly thanks to the fantastic line-up of films they released on VHS: Bad Blood, Bad Taste, Creepozoids, Dr. Alien, The Imp, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (though without the word “chainsaw” in the title thanks to stupid UK censorship at the time), the ever-awesome Intruder and Ghosthouse.

Number four in 88 Films Italian Collection, Blastfighter is one of those movies that, at least amongst cult movie fans, has gained legendary status, even for those that have never so much as seen the film! This is the type of action flick that fans of the genre hail as the pinnacle of insane, over the top, no-holds-barred Rambo/Deliverance knock-offs – for that is obviously where this film takes its inspiration. But this is backwoods-style vigilante justice with an Italian twist of course! Which is undoubtedly why the film has gained such a cult status.

Photo: AMPAS Polls Are Closed, Click Here For The Complete Results And Comparison To My Predictions It seems like the Oscars take forever to arrive, but when they do it's almost as if you aren't prepared. I offered up my first Best Picture predictions almost a year ago exactly, and by the looks of it predicting that early doesn't result in very accurate results as I only had three of the eventual nominees on the list and two films didn't even end up released in 2013. Oh well, it's all part of the fun. We watch, we scrutinize, we judge, and sooner or later it all becomes quite clear which films and performances will be rising to the top in each category. We discuss the last two nomination slots and we bicker over the #1 line, not because we necessarily feel one film or performance is better than another in its respective category,...

For those who think Jennifer Lawrence is too blonde and Oscar-y to survive in post-apocalyptic North America, The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins would like to emphatically disagree. In a post written for Entertainment Weekly‘s The Hob, Collins defends Jennifer Lawrence’s casting as Katniss. I felt there was only one who truly captured the character I wrote in the book. And I’m thrilled to say that Jennifer Lawrence has accepted the role,” Collins raves. “In her remarkable audition piece, I watched Jennifer embody every essential quality necessary to play Katniss.” Given how truly committed Collins sounds in her letter, we wouldn’t be surprised if she actually made Lawrence battle to the death with another sweet adorable ingenue. Hey, we saw Winter’s Bone; we know you don’t mess with Jennifer.
Given how much Lawrence values the role of Katniss, a role Sucker Punch‘s Emily Browning also vied for,...

Like some deranged, X-rated episode of Miss Marple, Mario Bava's giallo slasher crossover is a gleefully sinister tale where anyone and everyone is a suspect. Beautiful, blackly comic and disturbing it pre-dates the golden era of Us slashers that owe so much to it by nearly a decade.
When Countess Federica Donati (Isa Miranda) is bumped off in the film's opening moments, it sets in motion a chain of gruesome deaths as an assortment of miscreants attempt to takeover the beautiful bay she owns. Amongst those vying for a piece of the pie (or indeed all of it) are an architect intent on development, the countess' daughter, son and husband. Add to this their various spouses and lovers, plus some fun-loving but doomed teenagers partying in a disused night club. The film opens with a pair of brutal deaths and continues in this manner as various characters are swiftly...

A Bay of Blood is a film that has been distributed under a large number of different titles, including Bloodbath, Carnage, Chain Reaction, Twitch of the Death Nerve, Reazione a Catena (which roughly translates as ‘The Ecology of Murder’) and it was even baffling released in the USA at one point as Last House on the Left Part II. The film is directed by Italian visual master Mario Bava and is perhaps best known as being considered by many to be the first ‘slasher’ film.
A Bay of Blood begins with two murders, the first an inventive and twisted hanging in which a woman in a wheelchair (the Countess) has a noose tied around her neck and her wheelchair pushed out from under her. The perpetrator of this murder is then stabbed by an unseen second murderer. This little comic twist in the opening is a taste of the film...

Arrow Video's commitment to gruesome Italian horror doesn't end with Dario Argento. They are proving that they are pretty darned committed to releasing the works of other Italian masters. So far, they've tackled a couple of Lucio Fulci titles with one more in the pipe, one Lamberto Bava feature again with a couple in the pipe, and the Grandaddy of Italian horror, Mario Bava is about to make his debut on English friendly Blu-ray thanks to them.
Two of the films on this list are being released uncut for the first time ever in the UK, another case of Arrow Video fighting for their properties and making sure that the viewer gets what they expect! The first is Lucio Fulci's House By The Cemetery, which was finally passed uncut in the UK for the first time ever last year The second film is Mario Bava's seminal slasher, A Bay of Blood...
