Hubbell’s girl may be lovely, but Robert Redford’s co-star on “The Way We Were” allegedly wasn’t, according to the actor.
In an oral history of the iconic 1973 romance “The Way We Were,” director Sydney Pollack recalled Redford voicing his concerns over working with Barbra Streisand due to her perceived “controlling” reputation on set.
“She has never been tested,” Redford told Pollack, according to Robert Hofler’s “The Way They Were: How Epic Battles and Bruised Egos Brought a Classic Hollywood Love Story to the Screen,” on sale January 24, 2023. “Her reputation is as a very controlling person. She will direct herself. It’ll never work.” While director Sydney Pollack died in 2008, author Hofler compiled years of past interviews for the book.
Redford was particularly concerned with the “Funny Girl” Oscar winner’s musical background, saying, “She’s not going to sing, is she? I [don’t] want her to sing...

HollywoodNews.com: Playboy centerfold cum “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Kendra Wilkinson has been quite open about her breast implants, having famously had them installed when she was 18, but finding them too big after giving birth to her and husband Hank Baskett’s baby. Reality star Heidi Montag has blabbed about her G-cup implant choice and subsequent desire to downsize. Sharon Osbourne was quoted saying that after she had her implants removed, she’d give them to husband Ozzy to use as a paperweight, or two. Victoria Beckham, Janice Dickenson and Jenna Jameson have all been up and down the breast implant scale, and Pamela Anderson has switched implants, and switched again.

Now she thinks Fillion should guest on “Body of Proof.”
“It’s quid pro quo — the perfect ABC cross-promotional opportunity,” she says. Such a guesting would have to wait awhile, since “Body of Proof” has already wrapped production of its first season.
When we spoke to the actress for Aarp.org, she noted that whether “Body of Proof” works out or not, she’d be fine with the outcome, because there are plenty of other activities that spark her interest:

Kristin Wiig’s “Bridesmaids” was previewed at the recent SXSW Film Fest to a chorus of agitated reviews, horrible to ecstatic, and attendee applause. Sounds like the kind of response that’s greeted other comedies with gross-out moments that sell lots of tickets despite critical loathing.
“I hope that other studios will start taking a gamble on funny girls, because we’re interesting,” declares the movie’s Wendi McLendon-Covey. “There are a whole lot of girls out there who aren’t afraid of making themselves look stupid, who aren’t vain, who can do what the boys are doing.” She adds, “We’re always seeing the same funny boys in the same types of movies, the manboy movies. “She has a contract to honor, or course. But she’s one of those indestructible women.

“I thank ABC/Disney for bringing us back for five seasons. That is extremely rare,” he continues. “I hope that the show goes on and on, but whenever it is the end, I’d like to hear, ‘Guys, this is the last season. Let’s ride it out the right way,’ and they allow us to close...

HollywoodNews.com: Lori Loughlin says she has no regrets about departing “90210″ and is leaving the CW show “on the very best of terms.” Lori, who’s been playing mom to Shenae Grimes and Tristan Wilds on the series since 2008, departs at season’s end as the show’s young cast of characters graduates from high school and heads off into college life.
“The CW has a demographic and they need to write to that demographic and I think the CW does that really well, you know?” she says.
“I think, for me, it’s time to creatively move on, because there’s not that much for me to do, and again, I understand and I have no hard feelings.”

HollywoodNews.com: Pundits may be piqued, and the blogosphere may be filled with fury over Christopher Nolan’s omission from the Best Director Oscar race, but the “Inception” filmmaker himself was the very picture of graciousness and good cheer at this week’s Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon.
The movie star handsome British filmmaker – a double nominee for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay — skipped the press room, no doubt well aware of the “snub”-related questions that would come his way. We happened to be seated at the same table as Nolan, where he appeared to enjoy looking over the nominee certificates he picked up after participating in this year’s class photo, and rather tickled about it as he got out his new Nominee sweatshirt and gave it a little pat. HollywoodNews.com: Jennie Garth’s departure from the current CW manifestation of ”90210″ has been reported as both her decision, and as a producer decision. But now, she makes it clear, “I had a little problem with the producer they had chosen to do season two of the show. I didn’t care for her or her creative ways. I was happy to part ways. But as an original cast member, I was sad to see the show being taken in a direction I was not proud of.”
Garth — forever to be thought of as key character Kelly Taylor by “90210″ fans — doesn’t mind admitting she no longer watches the show. She also says, “I don’t imagine Kelly ever coming back to that world.”
The actress’ priority is her three daughters, who range in age from 13 to four, and her husband, Peter Facinelli.

HollywoodNews.com: With Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubrey throwing their ugly custody fight into the public arena, “This year, this is going to be the Super Bowl of paternity actions,” in the opinion of leading family law expert Debra Opri. The case, she believes, will serve “as a road map to people who have a child and aren’t married — of how to do it right and how not to do it.”
To recap: Aubrey filed a paternity petition Dec. 30 to establish his parental rights with two-year-old daughter Nahla. It was thought at the time that the former couple had worked out a stable arrangement for sharing time with their daughter. This week, through her rep, Berry let it be known that she had dropped out of Garry Marshall’s “New Year’s Eve” to prepare for a custody battle, and that she...

HollywoodNews.com: Paula Abdul’s new CBS “Live to Dance” competition show took a ratings tumble when it ran up against her old show, “American Idol,” in head-to-head competition last week (26.2 million viewers compared to 5.3 million) — but “Live to Dance” judge and Paula pal Travis Payne refuses to go negative about that.
“The only way to look at it is that both shows are perpetuating the arts. Both are so specific. There’s room for both,” insists the renowned choreographer and dancer, known for his work with Michael Jackson as well as dozens of other top names including Beyonce, Shakira, Usher, Lady Gaga, Madonna and (small world!) HollywoodNews.com: Rick Fox had a blast shooting last night’s (1/20) episode of “Big Bang Theory” on which the preternaturally hot-looking former NBA star cum actor is playing a college professor who is an expert on global warming. He’s also the former boyfriend of Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), which — of course — makes her boyfriend, Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), massively insecure.
The story is open-ended for a reappearance by the tall, dark and handsome professor, according to Fox. And he’d love to return. “I love the process of starting out with the table read, putting the show on its feet, trying things, making different choices, getting new pages, seeing how the humor gets sharper and tighter throughout the week, and then doing it live in front of a studio audience. There is nothing like that energy.”

“That’s kind of the rule of thumb. We’re all here to look out for each other. Look, we know we’re in the presence of a national treasure here, but she’s a strong one. She’s a tough broad, I have to tell you,” Malick says.
“She’s got some kind of constitution. The woman lives on hot dogs and french fries. I was trying to get her to eat salad with grilled salmon and my husband said, ‘Will you stop? Whatever she’s been doing is obviously working.’ Maybe red licorice is the secret to a long life.

HollywoodNews.com: What strange times for Janet Jackson.
The songstress has been on the scene this week for the highly-emotional preliminary hearing on an involuntary manslaughter charge against Michael Jackson’s physician, Dr. Conrad Murray. (She has been quite vocal in blaming the doctor for her brother’s death.) At the same time, she has her own imminent business — including planning of her soon-to-launch Number Ones, Up Close and Personal world tour. Tickets go on sale today (1/8).
There’s also the launch of her “True You” book dealing with diet, exercise, self-image and self-esteem to contend with. The tome hits stores Feb. 8.
And on top of that, Janet could easily find herself in this year’s Academy Awards running come Jan. 25. Her hit “Nothing” (written and produced by her in association with Johnta Austin, Bryan-Michael Cox and Jermaine Dupri) from Tyler Perrry...

HollywoodNews.com: Far be it from us to complain about anything on the Oprah Winfrey Network, which will no doubt fulfill its laudable intention to entertain and inform viewers with thoughtful, high-quality fare. After having had to watch such sleazy and exploitative offerings as “Dating in the Dark” and “16 and Pregnant” elsewhere, we want to give the folks at Own all the encouragement and applause they deserve!
Still, it’s a curious thing — via her final season documentary and various behind-the-scenes pictorials at the new network, it’s hard not to notice how many of Oprah’s production team members are overweight, and not just by a few pounds. It seems a number of them, from producers to assistants, male and female alike, could use the healthy diet and exercise practices Oprah has embraced through the years with the help of trainer Bob Greene.

HollywoodNews.com: The New Year is here at last! We’ve dusted off our trusty celebrity crystal ball and we’re ready to make our fearless predictions about Hollywood and its stars in 2011.
New “American Idol” judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will show the public how enormously watchable they can be when talking as themselves, and will give the show an injection of fresh life. HollywoodNews.com: Cat Deeley’s taking a breather – briefly – to go “home to Mom and Dad’s for a big family Christmas” in the countryside of her native England, with special company.
“My brother and his wife had a new baby two weeks ago, a little girl. He called and said, ‘Hello! Get your dressing box up and ready. You’ve got a little girl to play with,’” recounts the “So You Think You Can Dance” hostess. Besides baby Anna, she’ll be with her two-year-old nephew, Harry, and assorted other relatives.

She’ll quickly get back to work after the festivities are over, however.

hollywoodnews.com: While the “White Collar” team is busy creating episodes of their sophisticated crime dramedy, off-camera their set is becoming something of a romper room. At least, that’s the feeling one gets listening to Tiffani Thiessen, whose six-month-old daughter, Harper, is the latest addition to the tiny visitor contingent.

I think we’re going to have a little playroom/nursery when we go back into production,” says the actress, who plays the smart wife of an FBI man (Tim DeKay) on the popular series that also stars Matt Bomer as a reformed, debonair thief. hollywoodnews.com: While the “White Collar” team is busy creating episodes of their sophisticated crime dramedy, off-camera their set is becoming something of a romper room. At least, that’s the feeling one gets listening to Tiffani Thiessen, whose six-month-old daughter, Harper, is the latest addition to the tiny visitor contingent.

hollywoodnews.com: Julia Roberts’ dust-up with paparazzi who were swarming her and her children during an outing the other day points up — again — the need for some sort of regulation regarding overzealous photogs. It’s time. It’s years past time, in fact.
Best of all would be self-regulation, in the form of a pact between the celebrities’ camps and the agencies who rep the camera-wielding hordes. Buyers, from the tabloids to TMZ and other online and TV outlets, would then have to do their part by purchasing pictures and video only from signers of the agreement. And if they didn’t, they, and their parent companies, networks, or production entities would be barred from having any celebrity access — and from film/TV/music advertising involving stars.
Items to be included: discretionary distance when children are involved.
Roberts’ encounter is just the latest in a string of messy,...

HollywoodNews.com: Will the 2010 Oscars be a whites-only club? Gregg Kilday and Matthew Belloni projected the possibility in the ‘Hollywood Reporter’ back in September, and as this awards season has moved forward, indeed, the focus has been on a collection of Caucasian colossi.
Where are the faces of color? Minority stars have been busy cranking out big commercial movies this year rather than Oscar-type fare, goes the prevailing industry wisdom — Denzel Washington in “Unstoppable,” Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson in “Iron Man 2.” The dearth of African-American, Latino and Asian players in the critics’ awards picks is either 1) just a coincidence or 2)another result of the recession, as distributors fail to pick up independent films that feature minorities, and studios “play it safe.”
Before we get too carried away with this theme, however, the picture could still change. There are Oscar-worthy performances...

HollywoodNews.com: The New Year is holding a lot of promise for Ralph Macchio — some of that due to his hilarious “Wax On, @#!$ Off” video. He figures that between its home on Funny or Die, You Tube and other sites, it’s had more than two million views at this point. Along with the satisfaction of having a viral video that’s tickled the funny bones of computer users around the globe, “Wax On, @#!$” has “had an impact in the industry,” says the actor who’ll forever be remembered as the original Karate Kid.
He notes, “Funny Or Die is such an industry-savvy website, I knew if everything came into alignment, it would get passed around and give people a sample of my sense of humor. I have an irreverent sarcasm people don’t know about.” The video, directed by his friend, Todd Holland...

HollywoodNews.com: Despite the fact that “Men of a Certain Age” has attained the audience numbers and critical acclaim to warrant a second season – which launches tonight (12/6) on TNT – don’t expect the Ray Romano dramedy to linger on season after season.
That’s the word from the series’ Scott Bakula, who says of Ray and his co-creator, Mike Royce, “It was never their intention to have it become a nine-year-old show, to keep it going and going. Their intention is to move the stories along relatively quickly.”
Thus, “Ray’s character is moving forward in his relationships. His gambling story takes a crazy turn this year,” says Scott, speaking of Romano’s character’s apparent betting addiction. The third member of their triumvirate of buddies, played by Andre Braugher, will be seen “taking over his father’s car dealership with his wife.

HollywoodNews.com: Dick Cavett reports that it looks like his Dec. 7 Writer’s Bloc chat with Mel Brooks, onstage at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, will be put on video for posterity. He certainly hopes it will. “It can only be fun,” says the talk show legend, who’s previously mixed it up with the master funnyman not only on his own program, but in a series of kooky award-winning beer commercials.
Witty exchanges like his and Mel’s are rare show business fare in these times.
“I do have a general feeling that most things are getting worse” when it comes to the diminishing quality of public discourse on television, admits Cavett.
However, adds the man who conversed with guests ranging from John Lennon and Katharine Hepburn to Buckminster Fuller and Charles Bukowski back in the 20th Century, “I don’t really watch much these days.

HollywoodNews.com: Kyra Sedgwick reports that she and hubby Kevin Bacon and their 21-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter will soon be taking off for a holiday vacation together in Belize — and she can hardly wait “to have our children in our clutches again for a week or so. Nothing feels better and safer to me than being surrounded by my husband and children,” says the Emmy-winning “The Closer” star, whose series returns with new episodes next week (12/6).
Kyra admits she’s still adjusting to having an empty nest at home in New York, now that daughter Sosie’s off at college. “My life is definitely changed — now I guess I’ll have the chance to see what that change means.”
One thing she already knows is that “It makes it easier to leave town, there’s no question. I won’t be torn for six months,...

HollywoodNews.com: Happy Thanksgiving to one and all, and a big serving of gratitude to the readers who contributed their votes — and wit — to this annual celebrity turkey shoot. Our cornucopia overflows with tackiness, so let’s get to it:
1. Snooki. Just in time for her 23rd birthday this week (Nov. 23), the petite “Jersey Shore” vixen becomes the top vote getter in the 33rd Annual Beck/Smith Hollywood Tacky Taste Awards. Yes, Snooki, nee Nicole Polizzi, won the hearts — or at least, the attention — of Tacky voters across the land.
“Cute little figure and dumb as a box of rocks. Snooki is my Tacky Princess for 2010,” writes R.M. of Anaheim, CA. “Snooki and ‘Tacky’ go together like Cheetohs and orange fingers. Ya gotta love her,” says Jamie L. of Canton, Oh. Referring to her arrest this past summer for loudly stumbling around drunk on a beach,...

hollywoodnews.com: Jacqueline Bisset is awaiting word on the fate of “The Last Film Festival” — Linda Yellen’s big-screen comedy in which she stars with Chris Kattan and the late Dennis Hopper, which, she reveals, “We still haven’t quite finished. We still need more money to finish it. It’s a pity. They’re just struggling with the end of it, hoping someone comes forward. It’s Dennis Hopper’s last film, and it’s fun — really pretty funny.”
Bisset, who has the Hallmark Channel Original Movie, “An Old-Fashioned Christmas” coming up Dec. 11, tells us that the cancer that took Hopper’s life in May was not apparent when they worked together. She adds, “I was actually an admirer of Dennis for years as a painter and photographer” — in addition to his work as an actor and filmmaker.

HollywoodNews.com: Patty Duke gives a big thank-you to gay fans for helping her get over her decades-long feelings of humiliation over her performance in the 1967 “Valley of the Dolls.”
The esteemed, Oscar-winning actress will reign o’er “Valley of the Dolls” special screening festivities at Chicago’s Music Box Theater this Saturday (11/20) — festivities complete with a costume parade and “Valley of the Dolls” sing-along.
“I’ve come to enjoy that movie — not that it’s not still embarrassing. But thanks to the gay community, I can see it in a different way and have a good time with it,” she says.
Still, the memories linger all these years later of the critical drubbing meted out for the adaptation of Jacqueline Susann’s novel of pill-poppin’ show business gals with unfortunate love lives, in which Duke starred along with Barbara Parkins and Sharon Tate.

HollywoodNews.com: Communications expert, professor and author Dr. Lillian Glass reports she’s simply staggered to find the archetypes in her new “Toxic Men” book making news these days all over the celebrity sphere. And once she starts naming names, she makes a very good case for just that.
“It’s been amazing, what is happening in the headlines. For instance, Charlie Sheen — a celebrity face and name — is absolutely a toxic type. He’s in the category of the gloom and doom self-destructive victim. He’s had it all, had everything handed to him over and over, yet he has these self-destructive issues including being with the women he should not be with again and again, and being very hostile with them,” says Glass, who’ll be seen with Joy Behar and Dr. Phil this week tubthumping on behalf of the tome.

The actor went through grueling physical stress to make that performance work — starting with “five to five-and-a-half hours a day of makeup, standing up.
