With the birth of her first child Walker Nathaniel, now 16 months, Idina Menzel took a step back in time — and has been loving every minute of it.
“You get to relive your childhood when you have a baby and you see these toys and these books you read when you were little — the innocence that you are able to maintain … to connect with your child keeps you in a special state of mind,” the actress, 39, tells Broadway World.
Despite Menzel’s hectic schedule, special moments with her family — including husband Taye Diggs — remain her first priority.

There is one area of expertise that actor Taye Diggs will never add to his resume: handy man!
Fortunately Diggs’ wife Idina Menzel has a way of making the first-time father feel useful around the house — especially when it comes to the couple’s 16-month-old son Walker Nathaniel.
“My wife never throws anything at me that I can’t handle,” Diggs, 40, tells Good Housekeeping.
“I’m very proud of putting together a simple plastic slide for Walker. I feel like the king of the world.”

"American Idol" season nine judges
Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox
Ellen DeGeneres was the first to admit that her first, and as it turns out, last, season on "American Idol" was not smooth sailing. In the statement announcing her departure from the show, the daytime talk queen and veteran comedienne copped to feeling uncomfortable criticizing young singers. "It was a difficult decision to make," DeGeneres said, "but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings."
MTV News reached out to its panel of "Idol" experts for reaction on Friday (July 30), and each member said they were not shocked that DeGeneres pulled the ripcord on her three-year contract.

German National Football Team takes third place at World Cup
A German sports agent named Michael Becker is making some interesting claims about the current lineup Germany's national football team.
Der Spiegel quotes him as claiming there's a "bunch of gays" in the new lineup and under the leadership of new head coach Joachim Löw there's some sort of gay conspiracy afoot.
Becker comes off as quite the patriarchal blowhard in this piece. He has an apparent axe to grind since his big client is the German team's injured captain Michael "the bulge" Ballack.
Michael Ballack
Ballack wasn't able to play at the World Cup, but that "bunch of gays" seemed to do quite well without him – securing a third-place finish. And that's not all, young player Thomas Muller got the World Cup's coveted Golden Boot award for most goals by an individual player. (For more on the World Cup generally,...

Crystal Bowersox performs on "American Idol"

Crystal Bowersox stood just off camera, looking slightly perturbed. A publicist tugged on the zipper of her brand-new leather jacket, a fashionably cut, butter-soft thing that had been given to her as a gift, presumably after finishing second on "American Idol." It was a very nice jacket. The problem was with the zipper.
"Man, you would think this thing would work better," Bowersox said to no one in particular, tugging on the tab, sticking her fingers in the metal teeth of the contraption. "If people want to give me nice stuff, that's cool. I'm going to Goodwill."
Ultimately, she and her publicist managed to force the zipper three-quarters of the way up the jacket, Bowersox smiled,...

It could be déjà vu all over again Wednesday night (May 26) on "American Idol." Like last season, when flashy Adam Lambert charmed the judges and audience with his operatic wails and wild outfits while workmanlike Kris Allen slowly gained steam in the final weeks, MTV News' "Idol" experts are predicting that this year's dark horse will pull out a win.
Even though season-long leader Crystal Bowersox pulled out a star-worthy three-pack of performances on Tuesday night's show as Lee DeWyze struggled at times with nerves, our "Idol" watchers think DeWyze might still pull out an upset.

Los Angeles — The party got started long before the final "American Idol" performance show kicked off. "Idol" contestants from seasons past were right at home and accepted cheers and catcalling from the 7,000 fans inside the Nokia Theatre.
About an hour before the show started, season-one runner-up Justin Guarini held court. The curly-haired singer was outside near the talent check-in, taking cell phone shots with fans, shaking hands and laughing with friends he called out to.
Scott MacIntyre, the blind piano-playing contestant from season eight, was taken aback when the crowd whistled and applauded his arrival. Megan Joy — who got rid of the long, lush locks we remember from the same season — ran her fingers through her cropped...

Two days after the buzzed-about "Lost" finale, the second meanest man on TV this side of John "Smokey" Locke — departing original judge and the heart of the panel, Simon Cowell — went out not with his usual snarling put-downs, but with mostly kind remarks as Crystal Bowersox re-asserted her season-long status as the woman to beat with a pair of powerful performances that might have beaten back the late-season surge from rocker Lee DeWyze.

That's all that matters. For now! As Ausiello reported yesterday, Fox has picked up a comedy starring Will Arnett and Keri Russell called Running Wilde. Arrested Development mastermind Mitch Hurwitz is attached, so maybe it will be great. Or maybe it will be stupid. Maybe it will be "too smart for the lower common denominators who don’t get cerebral comedy, and thus canceled too early," as EW reader Kerri points out. And dear lord, if it has a laugh track? Forget it! Horror show! But Right Now, what's in my and likely many of your tunnel visions is that G.

Tonight, the final five “American Idol” contestants will lower to the final four. But whoever the unlucky contestant who leaves tonight is, at least he will leave with Lady Gaga ringing in his ears.
Lady Gaga will perform her newest hit, “Alejandro” tonight, as she announced on Twitter earlier today. She says she’s dedicating the performance to her fans.
Last night’s “American Idol” received the lowest TV ratings since its first summer on the air in 2002, according to Nielsen overnights. We’re not saying that’s because of Casey James’ terrible rendition of “Blue Skies,” but it sure didn’t help. If we were the betting kind, we’d put our money on James to be the one to exit tonight.
Even judge Kara DioGuardi, who has been a fan of James throughout the competition, compared him to a bleating lamb. Ouch.

Crystal Bowersox is one of our top favorite “American Idol” contestants alongside Lee DeWyze. Not only do the two of them have unique voices and styles, but they continue to perform exceptionally well week after week. Simon Cowell said that DeWyze’s performance last night was “the best of the night,” and we couldn’t agree more. Last week we posted that Crystal Bowersox almost quit after a meltdown occurred in the parking lot. Luckily Ryan Seacrest was there to talk her back to the show, which only prompted Bowersox to claim that he betrayed her.
Now People has reported that during last night’s “American Idol” she stated that there is “no beef with me and Ryan. We were never angry with each other. We had a conversation. He gave me good advice and I highly respect him.”

Adam Lambert returns to American Idol tonight as this week's guest mentor, and while some folks have said it's an affront to Carrie, Kelly, Cookie, and Kris to let the season 8 runner-up offer singing and performing tips to the show's current crop of contenders, I'm in the opposite corner, totally stoked to see how it all plays out. Let's be honest: Throughout season 8, Adam proved totally adept at molding Idol's weekly themes to fit his particular vocal style, and his general lack of conversational filter should make for good TV -- and perhaps jolt the remaining hopefuls to create their own Idol moments.

Good news for the Idoloonie nation: Over the next few weeks, you may be seeing a lot less of those "synchronized" swaying hands that pop up in the foreground of far too many American Idol performances. When I caught up with executive producer Ken Warwick via phone this afternoon to talk about the April 21 installment of Idol Gives Back -- more on that later in the week -- I managed to sneak in a brief question about this week's guest mentor Adam Lambert, and to ask about putting an end to those pesky Swaybots. Idol drew 20.1 million viewers and was up 5 percent over the previous week's results show among adults 18 to 49. Its lead-in, Human Target (8 million viewers), was down a bit in the demo, but remained steady with its competition.
NBC took second place overall against CBS and ABC, which mostly aired repeats. Mercy (5.6 million viewers) was down in total viewers and in the demo, but Law & Order: Svu (9.5 million viewers) easily won the 10/9c timeslot.

Four more down, and another quartet to go before American Idol's Top 12 finalists are named on March 11. (Yes, folks, only one more week remaining until we get our Thursday nights back -- or start using some other TV show as an excuse for not leaving the couch.) [Warning: Spoilers Ahead, west-coast Idoloonies!] In living proof that at this early, contestant-heavy point in the competition, it's sometimes better to be abysmal than forgettable, voters approved a referendum to send home Michelle "half-gloves" Delamor, while sparing Lacey "0 for 2″ Brown. Still, a trio of scorched-earth vocalists -- namely Haeley "personality, 10; singing, 3″ Vaughn, Jermaine "Jesus didn't speed-dial!" Sellers,...

Jose Munoz performs on Wednesday's "American Idol"
Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox
Joe Muñoz had a lot of ground to make up on "American Idol," having only been shown once toward the end of Hollywood Week before this week's live debut.
Unfortunately, his good-but-not-great take on Jason Mraz's "You and I Both" didn't do the trick, and he was eliminated Thursday along with Tyler Grady, Janell Wheeler and Ashley Rodriguez. We caught up with the soft-spoken singer to talk about what went wrong and what's next.
Q: We didn't hear anything from you until the very end of Hollywood Week. Do you that lack of screen time was your downfall?
A: I don't think so, because other people didn't get screen time at all, and they got through. I try not to think about it that much.

After a rocky start to the semifinals, we take a look back at this stage of the competition last year.

Anoop Desai performs on season eight of "American Idol"
Photo: Michael Becker/Getty Images/ Fox
After two nights of middling top 24 "American Idol" performances — from Tim Urban's bleated butchering of OneRepublic to Lacey Brown's drearily clichéd "Landslide" — a consensus seems to be forming that this year's talent pales in comparison to that of last season. But are the season-nine crooners really that much worse at this stage in the competition than contestants that came before them?
We took a look back at the first live shows of season eight — when the show featured a top 36 rather than a top 24 — to reacquaint ourselves with past performances and provide a little context as the new season pushes forward.

Lilly Scott soared and Ashley Rodriguez bombed on Tuesday during the premiere performances of the top 12 female "American Idol" hopefuls. Let's take a look at how these 12 gentlemen stack up.

How much does Twitter tell us? Garcia should hope it portends a lot, because the guitar-strumming daddy has 6,500 more followers than the next closest competitor, making him far and away the most popular "Idol" contestant on the social network. Garcia has brought a measure of funky creativity to the show — with his remixes of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up" and Adele's "Chasing Pavements" — and...

Less than 24 hours after "American Idol" announced that, for the first time, it was allowing its semifinalists to maintain a presence on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, early favorites have emerged.
For years, the show has put a virtual headlock on all non-"Idol"-sanctioned social media, declaring a blackout on any information or correspondence from contestants during their championship run on the show. But after the final 24 were revealed on Wednesday night, Fox announced that each of the 24 finalists would maintain multiple online presences.
Though at press time none of them had actually tweeted (and it was unclear how free they would be to discuss what goes on behind the scenes at the show), by midday on Thursday (February 18), two of the early front-runners had already piled up a significant...

Taking the place of a beloved character on a long-running TV show is never easy. But on Tuesday night, talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres appeared to easily slide into the memorial Paula Abdul seat on "American Idol" without disrupting the show's flow, pleasantly surprising many of the "Idol" faithful who spent months fretting over how the Emmy-winning comedian would fit into the mix.
After questioning how DeGeneres would do once the show went live, one of the leading "Idol" bloggers, Mj Santilli, who runs mjsbigblog.com, had high marks for the debut on the first night of Hollywood Week. "Ellen's perfect bon mots from tonight's show were plucked from hours and hours of footage," she wrote.

On "American Idol" Tuesday night, new judge Ellen DeGeneres wasn't the only change on the screen.
In a highly effective bit of product placement, the large Coca-Cola cups have been as much of a fixture on the show as Randy Jackson saying "Dawg!" But thousands of viewers did a double take on Tuesday night when they saw Jackson, Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and DeGeneres sipping from orange-and-white Vitaminwater Zero cups. While the change isn't really that remarkable, it still felt oddly jarring to many viewers of the show. DioGuardi was even asked about the switch during a conference call with reporters on Wednesday (February 10).
"They were kind of colorful, different," she laughed about the new cups.

Ellen DeGeneres may not have years of experience in the music industry, but who cares? Her ability to sit still, be quiet, and (oh. em. gee.) actually pay attention to what's happening on the stage in front of her could set an exciting new precedent for American Idol's generally frustrating judges' panel: Yes indeed, the show is actually about discovering the next generation of music superstars, not watching four nimrods at a table drawing mustaches on each other, misstating pertinent facts about music history, and finding new and annoying ways to make the phrase "you gave it 100 percent" their own.

There's been a lot of ink spilled about Ellen DeGeneres' American Idol debut tonight, where, as part of the Hollywood Week proceedings, she'll take over the Chair Formerly Occupied by America's Wackiest Twitterer. Admittedly, I was resistant to the idea of Ellen as Idol judge when the news was first announced back in September, but a lot of my opinion was based on her painful guest-judging stint on So You Think You Can Dance last summer. Since then, the comedian/talk-show host has repeatedly stated that she'll take her Idol role more seriously. In fact, here's what she had...

Chicago auditioner, Brian Krause

Tuesday night's "American Idol" showcased Chicago's collection of hopefuls with heartrending backstories, laughably bad singers and only a handful of folks with enough talent to garner golden tickets. But into this otherwise unremarkable episode stepped a man named Brian Krause.
Krause's channeling of '60-era novelty act Tiny Tim was an "Idol" performance for the ages, so perplexing, so cringe-inducing, so straight-up weird that even the judges were left wondering whether it was all an act. But an act, it seemed, the 27-year-old substitute teacher from Pittsburgh was not.
After politely greeting Simon Cowell and the rest of the judging crew, Krause reared back and unleashed a nasally cry that sounded less like what is known as singing and more like a car had run over his foot.

Chicago – Let’s be honest: “Nip/Tuck” has been in need of a face lift for years. The show arguably jumped the shark when The Carver took over (in season three) and has never quite looked the same since. Even with the sizable flaws of the last two seasons, “Nip/Tuck” was never boring. It even showed flashes of creator Ryan Murphy’s occasional genius in the seasons since.
But the premiere of season six, which will be the show’s last, hints at a team that has grown weary of their own creation. Dull, confusing, and simply uninteresting, “Nip/Tuck” looks like it might go out with a whimper instead of a bang.
Television Rating: 2.5/5.0
The premiere of season six, “Don Hoberman,” raises more questions than anything else. And not questions about where it’s going but about what the hell happened. Firstly, who thought that Katee Sackhoff (“Battlestar Galactica...

News that Simon Cowell might bring top-rated British singing competition The X Factor to the U.S. airwaves has me feeling a little skittish. Maybe that's because of my profound and deep-rooted fear of change.* Or maybe it's because over in Jolly Old England, X Factor gobbled up American Idol's British cousin, Pop Idol, like the great white devoured that water-skier in Jaws 2.(For the record, Britain's iTV yanked Pop Idol after only two seasons in favor of upstart X Factor.) In most cases familiarity breeds contempt, but after 55 days and with just five house guests remaining in the Bb House, it just breeds crazy. Michele went from weeping to leaping with joy as Jeff and Jordan's worst nightmare came true when they found themselves facing each other on the eviction block. Add to that the fact that Hoh Kevin got his greedy paw locked in a box while the rest of the house scampered about the yard collecting cash that rained down from the sky and what you have is just another day in the Bb house. After winning Hoh, Kevin has kicked his game into high gear. The graphic designer has played a smart, patient and under-the-radar strategy. Somehow, despite being aligned with some of this season's most volatile characters, Kevin has never upset the Bb apple cart. Don't cry for Paula Abdul -- or expect to see her on the unemployment line. The exiting American Idol judge is being wooed by networks, a turn of events that started before she even decided to pull out of the top-rated Fox show, where she felt unappreciated, reports The New York Times [1] in a detailed dissection of what happened behind the scenes and what future lies ahead for Abdul, 47. The inside story comes simultaneously with a TMZ [2] newsflash that Abdul and ABC Entertainment Group president Stephen McPherson met on Tuesday afternoon. That report says, however, that contrary to some rumblings, Abdul likely will not end up as a judge on Dancing With the Stars, given that Abdul and Dwts judge Carrie Ann Inaba apparently do not get along. According to The Times, not only is ABC courting Abdul, but so are NBC and the producer of another Fox hit, So You Think You Can Dance.
