The Oscars have announced that 276 feature films are eligible for this year’s Academy Awards, with nomination voting set to begin Thursday, Jan. 27 until Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Last year, the Academy extended the eligibility year until Feb. 28, 2021 due to the pandemic, which produced 366 eligible films, the largest number of submissions since 1970. With only 10 months in this period, 2022’s eligibility list is on par with previous submission years.
All of the presumed Oscar contenders are on the list including “Being the Ricardos” (Amazon Studios), “Belfast” (Focus Features), “C’mon C’mon” (A24), “Candyman” (Universal Pictures), “Coda” (Apple Original Films), “Dune” (Warner Bros), “Encanto” (Walt Disney Pictures), “House of Gucci” (MGM/United Artists Releasing), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight Pictures), “Parallel Mothers” (Sony Pictures Classics), “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix), “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount Pictures), “Spencer” (Neon/Topic Studios), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony Pictures) and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios).

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Earlier this year, when the trailer for Walt Becker’s Clifford The Big Red Dog hit the internet, we all had a good laugh. “He’s too small,” we said. “He’s a weird shade of red,” we nitpicked. “No one could possibly afford a New York City apartment big enough for Clifford,” we…...

Paramount Pictures has announced it is developing a sequel to 2021’s family-friendly adventure “Clifford the Big Red Dog.” The studio has not disclosed whether the newest installment will play only in theaters or simultaneously on digital platforms, like the original.
The first film premiered in theaters earlier in November and has since generated $34 million at the domestic box office while playing concurrently on Paramount Plus. Though the company didn’t provide any tangible metrics, Paramount says “Clifford the Big Red Dog” has become the nascent streaming service’s most-watched original film to date. It should be noted that Paramount Plus rebranded from CBS All Access last March with limited cinematic offerings, so “Clifford” didn’t have much competition to cement its place as the streamer’s most popular new film.

“Eternals” will keep its crown at the domestic box office, as the Marvel entry is projected to repeat as No. 1 with an estimated $27 million gross in its second weekend.
Should current projections pan out, the MCU entry will fall approximately 62% in its sophomore outing. Measured against the second weekends of other Marvel Studios releases this year, that’s a much steeper drop than the 52% sink of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and a healthier one than the 67% tumble “Black Widow” took. However, that latter film simultaneously debuted as a rental on Disney Plus through the streamer’s Premier Access program, a release strategy that undoubtedly impacted its ultimate box office performance.
“Eternals” is headed for one of the larger second weekend drops in the MCU’s eleven-year history. “Black Widow” outstanding, the only other franchise entries to fall at least 62% in their sophomore outings are 2018’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp...

Refresh for more analysis and chart Despite the worst reviews for a Marvel movie, and a B CinemaScore, the second weekend of Disney/Marvel’s Eternals didn’t implode, now on track for a -62% weekend, which is on the high end of where we were expecting it with $27.4M. The pic made $7.8M yesterday, -75%. Through ten days, the Chloe Zhao directed movie will stand at an estimated $118.7M.

Marvel’s Eternals dominated at the box office last weekend, opening to $71.3 million and making up 65% of the entire weekend box office, bringing the overall box office back above $100 million after two frames of falling short. While October had three weekends in a row where the box office stayed above $100 million, November is looking more like the somewhat front-loaded July which, despite some solid openings, never crossed $100 million in a weekend after Black Widow’s July 9-11 opening.
With no major competition, Eternals is looking at another number one weekend even if it has a big drop. While the Chloé Zhao directed film’s mixed reviews may not have hurt its opening weekend box office, the less than stellar word-of-mouth, as indicated by the film’s B CinemaScore (also the lowest in the franchise), is likely to hinder the film’s legs. The box-office performances of Shang-Chi, which has roughly tripled its opening weekend gross,...

Paramount’s Clifford the Big Red Dog, which is taking advantage of the Veterans Day holiday, filed second place on its opening day yesterday with $2.3M, which includes previews at 3,407 theaters.

One of the more notable Wednesday openings during the pandemic was Lionsgate’s R-rated Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard which did $3.9M, but that was boosted by Tuesday night and weekend previews. Clifford the Big Red Dog was born in a series of children’s books, the first of which was published in 1963. In the decades since, the adventures of the scarlet canine mascot-hero have been spun into three popular PBS Kids TV series, a live musical, video games, and the 2004 animated feature “Clifford’s Really Big Movie,” which was adapted from one of the TV series (and did very little business). All of which is to say that unlikely as it may sound, the new “Clifford the Big Red Dog” is the first really big Clifford movie. So what does that mean?
It means that the film retains some of the benign humanistic qualities of its source, but that it has also been shoved into the knockabout slapstick high jinks paradigm of such CGI-critter-meets-live-action comedies as “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Garfield: The Movie” and the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” films. Owing to concerns about the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19 and the impact it may have on theatrical revenues, Paramount has pulled its upcoming family film “Clifford the Big Red Dog” from its release schedule, TheWrap has confirmed.
The film was originally set for Sept. 17. But given that the situation with Covid-19 remains uncertain as large numbers of unvaccinated people directly aid the spread of the disease, Paramount will be making a decision on the film’s new release date at a later time.
Reps for Paramount didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Delta variant, which is more infectious than the original strain of Covid-19, is now themost common version of the virus in the U.S. and is a major factor, along with politically motivated resistance to vaccinations, in rising infection rates in 47 states. Los Angeles County officials reinstituted a mask mandate in...

Toronto Film Festival organizers declared two weeks ago they will be welcoming back in-person audiences for a fest that will run from September 9-18. This after Canada made an exemption to allow for the National Hockey League playoffs to happen in country, and more recently that the Toronto Blue Jays will resume playing in the ballpark on Blue Jay Way by the end of the month. The fest also allowed fans to wet their beaks with a few films that were set.

While we got a first look at “Clifford The Big Red Dog” — which horrified some because of its blood-red color and kaiju size — the first full trailer for the live-action film shows just how impractical having a pet of that size in New York would be.
This trailer shows Clifford playing with another dog and accidentally licking it up into its mouth before spitting it back out. It also shows Clifford chasing giant inflatable balls in which people in the park are rolling around inside for exercise, only for Clifford to proudly knock them across Central Park and carry the deflated shells back to his humans.
“This dog is killing me,” Clifford’s owner (played by Jack Whitehall) says in the trailer.
The first full trailer for “Clifford The Big Red Dog” also gives a look at some of the film’s co-stars, including Kenan Thompson, Tony Hale and John Cleese.

Paramount Pictures released the first look at its adaptation of the Scholastic’s popular children’s book Clifford the Big Red Dog and the large canine looked very red… or something close to it. As soon as the teaser trailer was dropped Twitter erupted with reactions — and not many of them were good.
Just search “Clifford” on Twitter and you will read the many reactions that range from creepy to hilarious. But the one thing was the look of the dog. Many were commenting about how the dog looked weird — but mostly the hue of red.
“I was trying to pin down what Clifford’s color reminds me of, and I figured it out: a blonde person who did the kool-aid hair dye thing,” tweeted BuzzFeed reporter Caroline Haskins.
Meanwhile, many people just dug into the look of the dog, not holding back on the ridicule.

Did Hollywood learn nothing from the toothsome first version of Sonic the hedgehog?
After Paramount debuted a first look at the new CGI version of the children’s classic “Clifford the Big Red Dog” on Wednesday, fans took to the internet to express their displeasure at the title Labrador retriever’s “scary as hell” appearance.
“This isn’t Clifford, it’s a dog covered in blood,” Twitter user Mevans2703 wrote.
Twitter user @Kathriller suggested that the new film might be a horror movie, posting an image of the character dwarfing much smaller canines: “Clifford is already drenched in the blood of his enemies and he isn’t finished.”
The movie, based on Norman Bridwell’s beloved children’s books and subsequent PBS TV series, follows Clifford and his human pal, Emily Elizabeth (played by Darby Camp), who adopts the little, red puppy from a magical animal rescuer (John Cleese) — and...

They are being joined by fellow former Paradigm agents Katt Riley and Martin To on the lit team, with plans to hire more agents, coordinators and assistants while many talent agencies have been contracting in the face of the coronavirus-related Hollywood production shutdown.
