Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy combined their Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the third annual Best Sound prize are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” (16/5) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (9/2), “Elvis” (9/2), and “The Batman” (9/2).
The 23 craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a whopping 72 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work. The one responsible for the largest chunk is Andy Nelson, whose dual bids for “The Batman” and “Elvis” bring him to a record-fortifying career total of 24. He is now the third person to receive two nominations at once in this consolidated category, after “Mank” and “Soul” sound engineers Ren Klyce and...

To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.
There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.
As with some of the other below-the-line crafts categories, this doesn’t always have a direct correlation with Best Picture,...

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”
The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.
It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

Casino waitresses are effectively "sex objects" and can be fired for putting on too much weight, according to a ruling last week by an Atlantic County Superior Court judge in New Jersey.
Superior Court Judge Nelson Johnson's decision ended the legal battle between popular Atlantic City casino the Borgata and a group of 22 former cocktail servers known collectively as "Borgata Babes."
The 22 Babes filed suit against the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa alleging weight discrimination, according to the Los Angeles Times. The women specifically targeted a casino policy that prohibited "Borgata Babes" from gaining more than 7 percent of their original body weight.
The Press of Atlantic City reports that in court documents, the Babes claimed that the stringent guidelines sometimes forced drastic measures. Waitresses were even told to take laxatives before to mandatory weigh-ins or stop taking prescription medications, according to the site.

Towards the end of his interview on the New York Times Book Review podcast, John Lithgow, whose new memoir, Drama: An Actor's Education, is reviewed by Ada Calhoun, along with Hal Holbrook's Harold: The Boy Who Became Mark Twain, tells Book Review editor Sam Tanenhaus that acting "really only exists while it's happening…. The more that an actor can accommodate himself to the truth that he will eventually be forgotten, the better off he is." Naturally, Tanenhaus asks, "Even film performances?" That's when Lithgow recounts an "appalling moment" from the days when he was working with "my dear young protege," Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who overheard some of the older actors talking on the set of 3rd Rock from the Sun, and asked, "Who's Cary Grant?"
Of course, Gordon-Levitt was young at the time — this would have been well over ten years ago now — but for anyone needing a refresher, do...

The title of The East, The West, And Sex: A History Of Erotic Encounters promises prurience to the max, but the subtitle mixes the academic and the arousing. Writing clinically about sex is always a gamble, and veteran journalist Richard Bernstein ultimately loses the bet after a semi-valiant struggle. He announces his thesis early: “for centuries the East, broadly defined to include most of the world’s territory from North and East Africa to South, Southeast, and East Asia, represented a domain of special erotic fascination and fulfillment for Western men.” With that “broadly defined,” Bernstein signals his awareness that ...
