On the last night of Rolling Loud Miami, a coalition of hip-hop's latest and greatest female rappers paid homage to the Queen. Not Queen Bey. Or Lil' Kim. But Trina. When the DJ dropped "Look Back at Me," a classic song from "Still Da Baddest," all of today's hip-hop queens were feeling it: Latto, TiaCorine, FloMilli, KaMillion, Kari Faux, Maiya the Don.
For those born and raised in the Southern United States, Trina was among the first wave of rappers to represent not only for the South but for women overall, and her impact is felt everywhere - from the rap game to modern television. Three years after André 3000 and Big Boi of Outkast said "The South got something to say" at the 1995 Source Awards, a swift and fierce rebuke of the bicoastal elites who thought the South should have no say in hip-hop, Trina made her debut on "Nann N***a,...

There is something liberating about the way Ms. Pat yells and curses at her husband, kids and sister on BET+’s new sitcom The Ms. Pat Show, which premiered Thursday.
Perhaps it is because behind all of that bluster, Ms. Pat truly loves her family, and swears at and harangues them only to show how much she cares. That’s what shines through in the Season 1 opener, giving stand-up comedian Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams a larger platform to deliver her brand of bawdy humor to more people.

The R&b veteran Kem hasn’t released a new album since 2014: He took time away to get married, have two kids, change management, and chase a life of domesticity rarely conducive to the rigors of being a working musician. After returning from that sort of hiatus, most singers would try to keep risks to a minimum. But “Not Before You” arrives as a pleasant jolt on Kem’s latest album, Love Always Wins — a traditional ballad enlivened by unexpected, enticing choices.

“Uncorked” kicks off on a delicious note of culture clash. As hectoring hip-hop pounds over the opening credits, the movie cuts back and forth between the owner of a Southern barbecue joint preparing the day’s fixins — grilling the pork ribs, stirring the tangy red sauce — and California vintners working their chem-lab alchemy to convert luscious green grapes into wine. There’s a parallel meticulousness that tells us we’re seeing variations on the same palette-tickling ideal. Yet the sequence, inevitably, also conjures up a ripe culinary class war of lowbrow v. highbrow.
All those dynamics are at play in “Uncorked,” an earnest, scrappy, and finally touching drama about a young man from Memphis who’s got a dream — he’s a wine buff who wants to become a sommelier — but if he follows it, it will tear him away from everything his father yearned for him to be. That,...

Blue Ivy is on her way to stardom, at least that's the way it seems based on her performance at a big dance recital. Ever since Beyoncé released her rendition of Frankie Beverly and Maze's 1981 hit "Before I Let Go," fans have been sharing some amazing dance videos inspired by the jam. One of the latest people to get in on the action is Jenna Dewan. The 38-year-old actress and dancer shared a clip of her taking on the "Before I Let Go" challenge as she bunny hops, shuffles to the left, and drops it down low to the floor. "I mean..we couldn't resist..!" she captioned the video. She also credits Beyoncé's choreographer James Alsop who dances alongside her in the clip.

Netflix has become a destination for television visionaries like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy, with deals worth $100 million and $250 million, respectively, and top comedians like Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle. The streaming giant, which just announced it’s added nearly 10 million subscribers in Q1, is honing in on music, too, landing a three-project deal with Beyonce worth a whopping $60 million, sources tell Variety.
The first of the three specials is “Homecoming,” the behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling her 2018 Coachella performance — a massive spectacle of dance, visuals and music that reaffirmed Beyonce’s moniker of Queen Bey — which premiered on April 17. The price tag on this installment, for which Beyonce Knowles-Carter is credited as executive producer, writer and director, hovers around $20 million. Beyonce’s rep did not respond to Variety’s requests for comment; Netflix declined comment for this story, although a source at the company disputed the financial terms of the deal.

Before you add any other superlative to her name, Beyoncé is, first and foremost, a performer. She spent her childhood being trained not just to be a great singer but to become the type of athletic vocalist who could sing while in constant, rapid, muscle-and-bone defying movement on a stage for hours. She would get the chance to show that off early with Destiny’s Child, and by the time she launched her solo career, her live abilities were otherworldly.

Netflix has released Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, which presents an intimate look at her historic 2018 Coachella performance that paid homage to America’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Interspersed with candid footage and interviews detailing the preparation and powerful intent behind her vision, Homecoming gives a peek into the process and emotional physical sacrifices it took to conceptualize and execute a performance of that magnitude that became a cultural movement. This stand-alone Netflix original is now available globally on Netflix.
As the first black woman to headline Coachella, Homecoming recognizes the African American visionaries who inspired Beyoncé, including Hbcu alums Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, activist Marian Wright Edelman, and scholar W.E.B. Du Bois, in addition to cultural luminaries such as Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Audre Lorde. Beyoncé’s personal knowledge of the relevance and celebration of HBCUs started with her father, Mathew Knowles, an alumnus of Fisk University.

During Beyonce’s performance at last year’s Coachella, she brought a company of over 200 marching band members, dancers, and background singers on a massive stage to put on a full two-hour concert. The popular festival is used to seeing flower crowns and hipster coffee shop headliners of the acoustic or Edm persuasion, but Beyonce did not want to give you that. She wanted to flip Coachella on its head and give you the unexpected. She wanted to serve you a show that only Beyonce can put on — and while she was at it, she decided to make a documentary about it called Homecoming and release a year later to remind you that the festival will never see a performance like this again. Ever.
Officially titled, Homecoming: A Film By Beyonce, the concert documentary dropped at midnight on Tuesday and the Beyhive was wildly buzzing beforehand as they waited with...

Beyonce had a big surprise for the Beyhive on Wednesday. After releasing her new documentary Homecoming on Netflix, the 37-year-old singer dropped a new album featuring her live performances from Coachella 2018. The album, titled Homecoming: The Live Album, was released on her husband Jay Z's streaming service Tidal. From her history-making performances of "Formation" to "Drunk in Love," the new album covers it all. It also features a new cover by Queen B. That's right! The 23-time Grammy winner sings a version of "Before I Let Go" for the album, which was originally performed by Frankie Beverly and Maze. In addition, the album features a very...

Beyonce has dropped a surprise 40-track companion album of her “Homecoming” 2018 Coachella performance to accompany the Netflix documentary about the event that arrived early this morning.
The album includes two bonus cuts near the end: “Before I Let Go” and “I Been On.” The former is a cover of a Frankie Beverly & Maze classic featured in the documentary’s closing credits, while the latter is an updated version of a song that was uploaded to SoundCloud back in 2013; “Bow Down” was included on the singer’s self-titled album that year.
Rumors of a new album called “B7” spread in the hours before the live album’s release based on a cover image of an album bearing that title taken from the Genius lyric-decoding website, however that may have been a placeholder built by the website in anticipation of a possible “Homecoming” soundtrack album; a search on “Beyonce B7 Genius” led...

R&B veteran Tank casually catalogs a sweaty night in his new single “Dirty.” This is a skeletal track, barely there at times: A few piano chords, a smattering of drums. The sparse instrumental puts all the focus on Tank’s erotic lyrics. But as the action heats up, the singer’s tone stays cool — except for one jump into falsetto, he could be reading aloud from his grocery list.

As has been the case over the last three weekends, this weekend is looking to outperform last year and, once again, by a significant margin. The big story, of course, is Disney's Beauty and the Beast as it continues to blow the doors off, becoming one of the fastest films to top $200 million at the domestic box office and, by the end of this weekend, will have topped $300 million in just ten days of release. In addition to Beauty and the Beast's second weekend, three new wide releases make their debut including Lionsgate's Power Rangers, Sony's R-rated sci-fi Life and WB's R-rated comedy CHiPs, all of which will have varying degrees of success as the top twelve should top a combined $180 million, making it the second largest weekend of the year. As of Wednesday, Disney's Beauty and the Beast has brought in $217.6 million domestically and another $244.3 million internationally. This...

Our TV Fanatics Lee, Jenn, Jasmine, and Christine O. are here to debate why the hooker didn’t take the payoff, if Davis is assumed guilty because of race, if the farm can really be saved, and much more after “The Darker Sooner.”

A number of top-level celebrities are reportedly following in Stevie Wonder's footsteps and plan to boycott Florida in protest of the state's "Stand Your Ground" laws. The list, which was first reported by Aurn's April Ryan and credited a "a source close to Wonder," includes the likes of Madonna, Usher, Kanye West, Jay Z, Rihanna and Rod Stewart.
Wonder announced his intention to boycott any state with "Stand Your Ground" laws after George Zimmerman after a jury acquitted George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman did not invoke the "Stand Your Ground" defense in the trial, though it did figure into the police's decision not to not arrest Zimmerman for weeks after the incident. Additionally, the "Stand Your Ground" defense appeared in instructions to jurors, and a juror cited the law in explaining the not-guilty verdict.

New Orleans — For more than two decades, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival has closed with a performance by the city's own Neville Brothers.
On Sunday, that tradition changed. Aaron Neville performed on a stage with his new band while young brass band frontman Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews closed the festival's biggest stage – where the Neville Brothers once held court the last day.
Andrews and his band, Orleans Avenue, entertained a jam-packed crowd as the festival ended its 2013 run. A sea of faces stretched to the track's back fence.
Neville said he views the closing lineup change as kind of a "passing of the guard.
"Trombone Slim, as I call him, will do a great job," Neville said of Andrews. "I remember when it was Professor Longhair out there and then we did it for a long time. It's time. Slim is a big musician and I'm proud of the way he's handled himself.

New Orleans — Little Big Town says that some networking they did is paying off with a chance to cross a couple of items off their "bucket list."
After playing Bayou Country SuperFest in Baton Rouge last year, group member Karen Fairchild said they talked to festival producer Quint Davis about other things they hoped to accomplish. They mentioned that they'd one day like to perform at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
Davis was in a position to help since he also produces Jazz Fest.
Known for its trademark four-part harmonies, Little Big Town performed in New Orleans on Saturday.
"Can you believe we're opening for Fleetwood Mac?" said Kimberly Schlapman, another group member. "We've been wanting to play Jazz Fest forever and now we're opening for Fleetwood Mac and can mark off two big things from our list."

Johnson chronicled the weekend on Twitter:

The first round of the NBA playoffs begin tomorrow with a 3 p.m. showdown between the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks. The Knicks — who secured the second seed in the Eastern Conference — had their best regular season in 15 years, due in no small part to Carmelo Anthony, the NBA’s leading scorer. We’ll leave the more intricate hoops talk to the experts, but EW caught up with Anthony to ask about his must-see-tv, what’s on heavy rotation on his iPod, and the last movie he saw with his son. (Hint: a different kind of ballgame).

-- With all the star power at the Bet Awards – Kanye West, Jay-z, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce and Samuel L. Jackson, to name a few – the most stirring moment came not from a superstar, but from the mother of one.
Whitney Houston's mother Cissy provided the emotional highlight of Sunday's ceremony as she sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in tribute to her late daughter, leaving audience members like Beyonce and Soulja Boy in tears.
Mariah Carey opened the tribute, and her voice wavered as she told stories about Houston. She recalled the last time she saw Houston last year, and how the two laughed and gossiped together.
