Tagline: "An Urban Legend Reborn." Pickaxe is a slasher feature from director Jeremy Sumrall (The Pick-Axe Murders Part III: The Final Chapter). This film debuted on most Digital platforms this past week. This title stars: A. Michael Baldwin (Phantasm), horror legend Tiffany Shepis (Strange Nature) and Kerry Beyer (Spirit Camp). An homage to '80s horror, the film's trailer debuted recently and shows a masked figure, focused on a small town. To bring the terror, a preview of Pickaxe is available here. The killings began in 1982. Long since dead, Alex Black (Perry Batson) is brought back-from-the-dead through a black magic ritual. The days are shorter, the mornings are crisper and Halloween is right around the corner. That can mean only one thing: It's time once again for SplatterFest, Houston's premier horror film fest.
Now in its third year, SplatterFest is the brainchild of filmmakers Kerry Beyer and Kelly Byrns. But this year, Byrns and Beyer have made their SplatterFest even bigger and better than ever. I know what you're thinking — after last year's ultra-groovy Bruce Campbell orgy-a-thon, how is that even possible?
Here's how: SplatterFest 2012 has expanded and created AmazingFest, destined to be one of the Southwest's top pop culture conventions, for a trip back to the days of shoulder pads, parachute pants and mullets...oh yes, my friends, SplatterFest is headed to the 1980s. And the guest of honor will be none other than that close, personal friend of Molly Ringwald and ultimate king of the geeks: the one, the only Farmer Ted.

The entries are in and the votes have been tabulated. I will now announce the two awesome, clever winners of the Planet Fury/SplatterFest 2011 Oasis of Terror Contest.
But first, I want to extend a hearty thanks to Kerry Beyer and Kelly Burns Smith, the perpetual motion machine that keeps SplatterFest running. They've been most gracious and have shown Planet Fury a lot of consideration this year. What they've done down in Houston is pretty cool. Besides being two of the nicest and most attractive people in Southeast Texas (seriously, you should see them), they are also two of the most committed people…or they are two of the most often committed people — I always mix that up. Whatever. Kelly and Kerry don't seem too dangerous, and after watching them in action, I appreciate all the sleep they sacrifice to make SplatterFest happen. They are truly the keepers of the flame.

It's been a frighteningly entertaining week down in the Bayou City. SplatterFest — Houston's leading horror film festival — is in full swing, delivering eerie entertainment to an eager Southeast Texas audience. But, sadly, it all ends tonight.
Since Tuesday, hundreds of horror and genre fans have flooded the Alamo Drafthouse for a nonstop cinematic menu of horrific exploitation fare garnished with a side of special guests.
After kicking off with two straight nights of horror shorts created specifically for the event, SplatterFest presented the world premieres of the rape/revenge flick Cherry Bomb and the faux-documentary Humans vs. Zombies.
Last night belonged to legendary genre vet Michael Biehn and his lovely wife, actress/producer Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, who is Michael's partner in every sense of the word. The couple was at SplatterFest to support two special films. The evening opened with a showing of the Biehns' new badass grindhouse thriller, The Victim,...

If you're anywhere near Houston, Texas, during the next week and want to have a little scary fun, I've got one word for you: SplatterFest.
As Houston's premier juried horror film festival, SplatterFest is without a doubt a leading light in the Gulf Coast regional horror community. And tonight, at Houston's Alamo Drafthouse West Oaks, SplatterFest begins a five-night run of 29 short films and 5 features, which culminates in a Saturday night screening of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy, featuring special guest Bruce Campbell.
Founded by the multi-talented team of Kelly Burns Smith and Kerry Beyer, SplatterFest has become quite a big deal, which is pretty impressive considering the fest is only in its second year. Kerry and Kelly are well-known on the Houston filmmaking scene and have dedicated themselves to creating a horror festival that serves the local artistic community as much as the everyday horror fan.
SplatterFest kicks off tonight at 7:30 p.

Wow what a weekend we all had at Comicpalooza 2011! I want to personally give a huge thank you to John Simons, Jody Pitts and the entire Comicpalooza team for everything!
I was honored to be a guest at Comicpalooza and represent GeekTyrant, the revived green ooze that is Alien Bee, Crocaloctopus and some of the movie projects I'm invloved in. I had a blast hosting the "How to be a Horror/Sci-fi blogger" panel with Marc Bernardin from Syfy, Blastr and EW. Our people in the audience were great and had some cool questions and I even had a little swag for them! Surprise!
So much going on at the George R. Brown Convention Center, wow that thing is huge! The largest convention center I've been in so far and I've made my rounds too! We stayed at the Hilton Americas which is connected to the Grb. Big shout out to the Hilton team,...

Got A Thing For Red-heads?
Kelly Burns Smith scorches up the screen in the upcoming Sci-Fi/Horror Code Of Evil, directed by Spirit Camp squad leader Kerry Beyer. This fiery red-head steamed up the indie world earlier this year with her debut in the soon to be released The Toy Box.
Beauty and brains in a petite package, Kelly is also co-founder of Splatterfest – a competition where filmmakers have a weekend to write, shoot and edit a horror short. Last year’s event produced 17 short films, 2000 fans in attendance, and a grand prize...

Kerry Beyer burst onto the independent film scene last year with his directorial debut Spirit Camp. Kerry took some time out for Killer Film to tell us about how this was much more than just the typical directorial debut.
Joshua Hull: Where did the initial concept of Spirit Camp come from?
Kerry Beyer: The idea for Spirit Camp really grew out of my love for 80’s slashers. I missed those types of movies, and I wanted to do an updated twist of the genre while keeping the old school vibe and pacing. …and who doesn’t want to see hot, half naked cheerleaders getting hacked up? I mean, the whole cheerleader thing has worked pretty well for Hustler, lol.
Hull: Now you wrote, directed, produced & were an actor in this film. You were also the cinematographer, editor, sound editor and handled all of the digital effects. Were you...

From Texas filmmaker Kerry Beyer and Kerosene Films comes Spirit Camp, a delightfully entertaining slasher comedy highly respective of ‘80s horror. A cheerleader’s mom takes her and her friends out to a cheerleading camp for the summer. Coming along for the ride are some cute, flighty cheerleaders looking towards a summer of practice and the occasional drugs and alcohol to sneak behind the backs of their trainers. Also along for the ride is a sarcastic, anti-establishment troublemaker of a girl who’s spent some time in a juvenile detention center and is going to the camp as part of her punishment. The local sheriff warns the girls that a maniac had escaped from a nearby asylum. Several characters come into play which of whom could possibly be this psycho, including a camp caretaker, a gas station attendant, and a whacky old dude. As nighttime nears, people soon start disappearing.

The new millenium has initiated the terribly tragic demise of some of the most influential deranged deviants in the history of horror films. A plethora of wimpy Jason Voorhees and Michael Meyers wannabes has submerged the slasher sub-genre in a swampy, leech-infested lake leaving me with no other choice but to accept the inevitable: my once immortal horror heroes have sadly been plagued with mortality by much tamer modern day manifestations of the macabre. Independent writer/director and owner & founder of production company Kerosene Films, Kerry Beyer takes a playful stab at re-inventing and ultimately redefining some of the greatest monumental machete-wielding maniacs ever to slash their ways through horror history.

The story starts off with a small group of cheerleaders camping in the forest at night and viewers will instantly know something not good is going to happen. Actress Julin passed on a couple of exclusive pics (see them below) from Spirit Camp, a cheerleader-slasher flick in which she plays one of the lead roles. The film was written, produced and directed (and shot, edited and scored) by Kerry Beyer, an acclaimed fashion photographer who won the Slamdance Anarchy Film Showcase and was a semi-finalist for a Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting.
Julin appears in the film as Rachel, leader of the popular girls at a cheerleader camp. When Goth chick Nikki (Roxy Vandiver) is sent there as part of her rehabilitation from a juvenile correction facility, the two enter into a bitter rivalry—until other members of the squad begin dying horribly, and Nikki, Rachel and the other survivors must band together against the mysterious maniac who’s stalking them. The cast also includes Brandon Smith, Megan Moser, Amy Morris, Jon Paul Burkhart, Kavon Rafat, Katy Rowe, Phil Leggett and George Brock.
