In 2009, Pedro Costa took a brief detour from his haunted, incantatory studies of Lisbon’s Fontainhas district to produce Ne change rien, a stark black-and-white documentary profile of actress Jeanne Balibar’s performances as a singer. A Straub-Huillet Companion is a series of short essays on the films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, subject of a Mubi retrospective. The following is an introduction to the first complete international retrospective of Serbian director Želimir Žilnik, opening at Doclisboa Film Festival October 22, 2015. The series is curated by Boris Nelepo and organized in collaboration with the Cinemateca Portuguesa.In early March of 1971, young film director Želimir Žilnik, winner of the Berlin Golden Bear for his debut Early Works, reads from the stage a manifesto entitled "This Festival Is a Cemetery," on the opening night of his short Black Film. He talks about the worthlessness of abstract humanism, exploitation of poverty, alleged bravery, and the “quasi-involved,” socially conscious filmmaking which just represents “the ruling fashion of bourgeois cinema.” "We refuse to regard this sudden concern of the film caste with the people as anything other than а new kind of bluff", Žilnik states. Black Film ends with a question: “Film – Weapon Or Shit?”This trenchant turn of phrase has only gained in acuity some forty-odd years later.

It all begins with a freeze frame of a dirt road somewhere in Yorkshire county, lined with trees whose lush foliage converges above in an arch. What could it be if not a portal? The movie itself, meanwhile, has not even started as we watch the opening credits, encased in large old-fashioned frames, slowly fade away—a device consistently favored by Alain Resnais who opened each of his 19 features likewise, holding off the films themselves until the screen no longer contained any visual surplus. The freeze frame comes to life as the camera pans farther down the road; then we find ourselves in a theatrical set.

The first-ever manufacturer of light bulbs in Portugal, Manoel de Oliveira’s father died in 1932, nine years after Raul Brandão wrote a play called Gebo and the Shadow. In the year 2012 Oliveira turned the play into a film, making a grimy, dim oil lamp its legitimate character: elderly accountant Gebo burns the midnight oil in it as he plods away at his books. In an early scene, meanwhile, his wife lights the lanterns outside their house with a match. No one seems yet to have heard of electricity; the time setting is unclear; presumably, it’s the turn of the century.

Criterion is releasing one of cinema’s most controversial films in director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Sodom, or The 120 Days of Sodom. The 1975 film is an adaptation of a Marquis de Sade story.
