Exclusive: Amblin Partners has set Michelle Dean to pen Stolen Time, its biopic telling the incredible true story of wrongfully convicted death row inmate Sonia “Sunny” Jacobs. Juliet Blake is producing; she is Head of Television at Ted and previously produced The Hundred-Foot Journey with Amblin. Amblin Partners’ president of production Holly Bario will oversee on behalf of the studio.
The studio recently acquired film rights to the riveting and timely story of Jacobs, who was in her 20s when she and her husband, Jesse Tafero, were convicted of the fatal shooting of two law enforcement officers based on the false testimony of the man who actually committed the murders. Sources tell Deadline that as part of the development process, Dean and Blake are reviewing over 2,500 personal letters sent between Jacobs and Tafero during their 15-year incarceration.

Manish Dayal (“The Hundred-Foot Journey”) is attached to star in the New York-set boxing story, “Uppercut,” penned by Black List writer Neeraj Katyal (“The Amazing Adventures of the Monogamous Duck”).
In the wake of “Hundred-Foot” finding success at the global box-office, Dayal expressed his passion for “the sweet science” to New York-based producer Atit Shah (“A Conspiracy on Jekyll Island”). Longtime friends, Dayal and Shah, subsequently began putting the project together via Shah’s Create Entertainment banner.
Dayal will play Shiva Singhavi, a young boxer raised in the blue-collar, Queens neighborhood of Jackson Heights. As he moves up the ranks of fighters, Singhavi struggles to navigate the gritty underworld of fixed fights, grimy gyms, and dirty cops. Racial tensions escalate following a shooting that Shiva is the sole witness to, and the street-smart athlete soon finds himself caught between a police force that protected him and the community that raised him.

The cast of the much-anticipated comedy drama The Hundred Foot Journey attended a press conference in London on Tuesday to promote and speak about the film. The Hollywood film, which has a French and Indian theme to it, has been directed by Lasse Hallstrom and produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake and is based on the novel by Richard Morais. Starring Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon in pivotal roles, The Hundred Foot Journey is a quirky, yet gratifying tale which anyone who is a big foodie will certainly relish. The music has been composed by the charismatic A R Rahman, who offers some nice and mellow compositions to accompany the film.
Asked during the press conference if he found it intimidating in any way to work with acting stalwarts such as Helen and Om, Manish Dayal had this to say. “I’d say definitely.

A flavour brimming mix of food, passion and heart, The Hundred-foot Journey is a story of persistence and triumph over exile. The film depicts a gastronomical fusion of cultures and cuisine and a boy’s compassionate drive to find himself in the comfort of a new home in a foreign country.
In the film, Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. When Hassan and his family, led by Papa (Om Puri), move to a quaint village in the South of France with the grand plan of opening an Indian restaurant in the picturesque countryside,...

(Cbr) - Even as a "Sandman" movie takes its first steps at Warner Bros. and "American Gods" moves from HBO to Starz, an adaptation of another Neil Gaiman book is heading into development. Variety reports that Juliet Blake, who partnered with Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey to produce "The Hundred-Foot Journey," has acquired the film rights to "Hansel & Gretel," the forthcoming reimagining of the Brothers Grimm tale by Gaiman and illustrator Lorenzo Mattotti. "For me, retelling 'Hansel and Gretel' was a way of telling an old tale in a way that made it immediate and true, and about us, now," Gaiman said in a statement. "It reminds us of how paper thin civilization really is. It’s about hunger, and about families." "Hansel & Gretel" will be published Oct. 28 by Toon Books. Gaiman’s earlier works "Coraline" and "Stardust" have already been adapted for the big screen. Like the latter,...

Neil Gaiman has written his own version of the classic Grimm fairytale Hansel & Gretel. It hasn't even been published yet, but the feature film rights have already been acquired. They were picked up by Juliet Blake, who recently teamed up with Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey to produce the wonderful film The Hundred-Foot Journey.
The beautifully gloomy artwork you see here was done for the book by artist Lorenzo Mattotti, and it has been described as "a stunning book capturing the terror and longing found in the classic fairy tale: at once as familiar as a dream and as evocative as a nightmare".
I would love to see an animated film in this dark style of art, but the plan is to do it live-action, which is fine. Gaiman had this to say in a statement:

Juliet Blake, producer of The Hundred-Foot Journey, is bringing Neil Gaiman's graphic novel Hansel & Gretel to the big screen. As the title suggests, the graphic novel is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale.
Perhaps the Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters didn't leave you with much appetite for this fairy tale, but something tells us that this adaptation will be a lot different. After all, Gaiman is the author of works like Coraline and Stardust, which have successful adaptions.
Illustrated by Lorenzo Mattotti and to be released in October, Hansel & Gretel follows the story of a brother and sister who discover a candy house that's actually a trap for kids set up by a wicked witch. The adaptation will be live-action.
Gaiman said in a press release that "retelling Hansel and Gretel was a way of telling an old tale in a way that made it immediate and true, and about us,...

In 2013, Gary Sanchez Productions brought us Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, an R-rated take on the classic fairy tale about lost children drawn to a cabin made of candy. Though critically scorned (for the most part), we're awaiting a sequel from this Jeremy Renner/Gemma Arterton vehicle. But Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 could face stiff competition thanks to Steven Spielberg. Variety reports Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake are teaming up to develop a live-action Hansel and Gretel movie. But rather than pulling inspiration from Brothers Grimm tale, this producing trio will be adapting an upcoming graphic novel penned by celebrated writer Neil Gaiman. His Hansel and Gretel boasts ink illustrations from fine artist Lorenzo Mattotti, and it's set to hit bookshelves on October 28th. While Spielberg's involvement will score the pic headlines, it was Juliet Blake who got the ball rolling by purchasing Hansel and Gretel's movie rights...

Juliet Blake (who recently teamed with Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg on The Hundred-Foot Journey) has acquired the feature rights to Sandman and Doctor Who scribe Neil Gaiman’s latest graphic novel.
The book will see Gaiman retell the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale Hansel and Gretel about a brother and sister threatened by a witch living in a candy house. The graphic novel features artwork by Lorenzo Mattotti, and is set to be released on October 28th. This latest adaptation of Gaiman’s acclaimed work will join the likes of Coraline and Stardust, and like the latter, the movie will be live-action.

There always seems to be an adaptation of one of Neil Gaiman's works in development. Right now there's an adaptation of How to Talk to Girls at Parties and also The Graveyard Book happening, not to mention the realization of a Sandman movie with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Now we can add one more to the list as Variety reports the author's forthcoming Hansel and Gretel graphic novel (arriving in October), based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale of the same name, has been picked up by The Hundred-Foot Journey producer Juliet Blake for a live-action adaptation. It has to be better than Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, right? It's not clear what makes this version of the classic tale different, but coming from Gaiman, we're sure it's something special. The original tale followed a brother and sister who got lost in the woods and ended up being given shelter by a witch...

Repackaging classic fairytales for a modern audience suddenly became a hot button topic for Hollywood in the last couple of years with Snow White & The Huntsman and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters providing revisionist takes an age-old stories. However, neither project managed to strike a chord with its respective audience and it seems the latter IP may be retracing a string of wayward breadcrumbs to get back to its roots.

Juhi Chawla was more than excited to be a part of Steven Spielberg's The Hundred Foot Journey and making a debut in Hollywood with such reputed names. However, the actress seems to be miffed with the way her character turned out to be in the film. Juhi Chawla, has been away from the promotional activities of the film, while her co-star and Bollywood veteran Om Puri has been promoting the film extensively. They set up shop across the street from a Michelin starred destination restaurant run by the forthright Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren...

It's rare when a film adaptation lives up the book it was based on so with that in mind I have compiled a list of 40 books that have been adapted for the big screen that we can expect to see in theaters this year. This includes two books from Gillian Flynn, young adult adaptations of work by Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins and James Dashner, a short story from Dennis Lehane, a Nick Hornby adaptation, and an adaptation written by Nick Hornby, a new John le Carre adaptation and a prequel to the stories written by Tom Clancy as well as a couple comics and graphic novel adaptations from the likes of Frank Miller and Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Alexander O. Smith. I've added everything I could think of and while I'm sure I missed a few, please forgive me and hopefully you'll find something that appeals to your taste on the list.
