When Martin Scorsese was just 11 years old, he storyboarded a cinematic epic named “The Eternal City,” which he described as “a fictitious story of Royalty in Ancient Rome.” It was envisioned to film in 75mm CinemaScope and star Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, Virginia Mayo, and Alec Guinness. This remains a fascinating, ambitious artifact that’s been shared far and wide online. But perhaps just as interesting are the storyboards critic Richard Blake describes in his book After Image: The Indelible Catholic Imagination of Six American Filmmakers. According to Blake, Scorsese, aged 10, drew even earlier the Stations of the Cross: images of Jesus Christ’s final days and moments before death.
Many years later, Scorsese would at last film his version of those events in The Last Temptation of Christ, and the result was one of the most controversial films of all time.
Christianity has a deep and enduring impact on Scorsese’s work.

The disc of the year has finally arrived and it’s 1000 worth the wait. William Cameron Menzies’ flight into schoolboy paranoia now really looks like it ought to hang in the Louvre; the entire show is inspired Modern Art. When Martians conduct a brain-snatching takeover of Middle America little David MacLean must save the day, with an assist from an astronomer buddy and a sexy city nurse. The review is mostly concerned with how the new Ignite release looks and sounds. The rejuvenation of this fantasy masterpiece will turn fans of the 1950s sci-fi boom back into delighted ‘Gee Whiz’ kids.

Gee whiz, sci-fi sure was simple in the early ‘50s, wasn’t it? Slap a little Red Scare subtext here, a damsel in distress there, scientists, the military, and of course aliens rounding out the films that beamed from every drive-in on a Saturday night. One of the earliest (and best) of the bunch is Invaders from Mars (1953), which sets itself apart by employing a unique viewpoint and having spectacular and surreal production design. Don’t write this off as a cheap time waster, you whippersnappers.
Distributed by Twentieth Century Fox near the end of April, this independent production received some favorable notices and made a swift return on its $290,000 budget, for good reason – seen through a child’s eyes, it captures that imagination and runs with it for 78 minutes, shoddy getups and all. Invaders from Mars is told with the fervor of an excited youth playing catch up with an exploding imagination.

The Night King doesn’t speak much. Well, he actually doesn’t speak at all. But the actor who’s played the powerful White Walker for last two seasons of “Game of Thrones” does, and he said that he’s coming for someone very specific when he leads the Army of the Dead in their invasion of Winterfell.
Of course, actor Vladimir Furdik wouldn’t actually say who that someone is, so we’re all left to wait until “Game of Thrones” returns for its eighth and final season next month to find out.
“People will see he has a target he wants to kill, and you will find out who that is,” Furdik told Entertainment Weekly in an interview. According to Furdik, however, many of the show’s fans who he has spoken to have one character on their wish list, and it’s not who you think: “Many...

You’ve seen pictures from it, you’ve seen clips from it, you’ve read the early reviews from Japan, and you’ve been dreading it. But today is the first day you’ll actually be able to see James Wong’s “Dragonball: Evolution” and finally decide for yourself. This is your official discussion thread for what might just be the most wildly discussed, dissed, and dissected movie of 2009. Who knew a kid with spikey hair would elicit such a variety of responses? So did you see it? And if you did, what did you think? Plot: A young boy named Goku seeks out upon his grandfather’s dying request to find the great Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls (of which he has one) in order to prevent Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the Dragon Balls to take over the world. Three new “Dragonball: Evolution” images for you kids to chew on, because frankly, you can never have too many glowing balls. Goku looks kind of weird in the first pic, the second one is the “okay, now you guys look up and act shock!” shot, and the third one has Piccolo looking like he’s getting ready to be turned into Robocop. No idea what that’s about. A young boy named Goku seeks out upon his grandfather’s dying request to find the great Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls (of which he has one) in order to prevent Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the Dragon Balls to take over the world. Starring Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Emmy Rossum, Yun-Fat Chow, Jamie Chung, Joon Park, Randall Duk Kim, Eriko Tamura, Ernie Hudson, Texas Battle, Luis Arrieta, Shavon Kirksey, Richard Blake, an directed by James Wong.

At this point, you’re either going to be lining up to see James Wong’s “Dragonball: Evolution” when it opens April 8, or you’re going to be cowering in your bed with your favorite blanky badmouthing the film to your imaginary girlfriend. (I’m guessing not a whole lot of girls are interested in this movie either way.) But just in case you still haven’t made up your mind, here are more images from the movie. Cause, you know, I care like that.
