It’s been a long road to Television Academy acceptance for music supervisors. In 2015, after years of lobbying, music supervisors gained entry to the music branch. In 2017, they got their own category at the Emmys, but weren’t allowed to vote in any other music competition. This year, music supervisors can vote in all seven music categories, thrilling some, enraging others.
In fact, you could say no one was happy. For the many composers and songwriters who make up the bulk of the approximately 600 members of the Academy “peer group,” as the branch is officially called, their efforts to keep music supervision out of contention as a category worthy of recognizing, have been thwarted. At the same time, some music supervisors are upset with how the new outstanding music supervision category is being handled — essentially questioning the Academy’s ability to judge the placement of songs or other musical works into programs.

The film, television and gaming music communities got the confab they’ve long deserved Tuesday as Variety hosted the inaugural Music for Screens Summit. Guests including Annie Lennox (pictured above with H. Scott Salinas), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Linda Perry, Terence Blanchard and Ramin Djawadi came to Neuehouse in Hollywood for a day of interviews and panels celebrating the art, craft and business of composing and music supervision, capped by a preview screening of Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
The day kicked off with a panel sponsored by Pepsi on the use of music in commercial advertising and featuring five unique case studies. Linda Perry, representing her company We Are Hear, detailed how a Quickbooks spot featuring singer Willa Amai’s cover of Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” created an instant audience for the teen newcomer. For the first time ever, the 2017 Primetime Emmys will hand out an award for Outstanding Music Supervision, acknowledging the creative contributions made by the music supervisors on TV series. It’s an award that’s long overdue; music supervision is an often misunderstood art form thought to be as simple as pulling songs off an iPod. “There’s so much work that goes into it that you don’t see on the screen,” says Amanda Krieg Thomas,...

When little-known New York indie band Fun released “We Are Young” as the lead single for their second studio album Some Nights in September 2011, it went largely unnoticed, only garnering some attention from online critics and quickly fading off the Billboard Hot 100 after debuting at No. 53. But then Fox’s Glee covered the song for a pivotal scene in a December 2011 episode, sending sales for the single soaring 1,650%. The show put “We Are Young” on the map and back on the charts. The song’s subsequent use in a Chevrolet Sonic commercial during the 2012 Super Bowl pushed it to No. 1. Tonight, “We Are Young” won a Grammy for Song of the Year, with Fun named best new artist. In their emotional acceptance speech the trio didn’t mention Glee but they probably should have. Glee music supervisor Pj Bloom was given a copy of the single ahead of its release...

Just days after Fox's "American Idol" made headlines for their tribute to the late Whitney Houston, the torch is being handed over to another series on the network. "Glee" is at work on a special tribute episode devoted to Houston. According to E! Online, the Fox hit is filming an episode of Season 3 that will include eight songs from Houston's discography.
"Glee" has become known for its tribute episodes. The singing comedy has aired tribute episodes for Madonna, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. However, E! Online reports the Houston tribute will be a bit different. The graduating seniors will be having a hard time saying goodbye and Houston's songs will be used to help drive the character drama. "Glee's" Lea Michele tweeted vaguely about an upcoming tribute.
Starting a new episode today. A very special tribute to one of the worlds most amazing singers. Very excited about this one.

Fox show remembers the late icon during Valentine's-themed episode with Amber Riley's rendition of 'I Will Always Love You.'

On Tuesday night, "Glee" paid homage to the late Whitney Houston. But Amber Riley's soulful rendition of "I Will Always Love You" had already been on the docket for the Valentine's-themed episode, titled "Heart," long before Houston was found dead Saturday in her Los Angeles hotel room.
While the song choice served to move along the plot — which revolved around the love triangle between Riley's Mercedes and her two beaus, footballer Shane (Lamarcus Tinker) and fellow Gleek Sam (Chord Overstreet) — it was particularly stirring, considering its timing.

In case you missed it now with all the musical stuff in Hollywood, becoming once again important to the industry, there was a recently formed Guild of Music Supervisors. In addition to awarding trophies and such, THR has learned that Fox’s hit program Glee will likely have an original song in an episode this season and next season there may be a show devoted entirely to original music.
The site reports that Glee music supervisor Pj Bloom, mentions the “possibility” that next season there will be an episode based around a class assignment whereby each chorus member would be tasked with composing an original song.
Glee is a show that with all the pop culture music renderings each week that is wearing thin on me, and because of that, it hurts the plot in my opinion. I think some original songs would be interesting to hear and see within the series.

Glee is up for two golden gramophones at this Sunday's Grammy Awards, best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals for "Don't Stop Believin'" and best compilation soundtrack album for "Glee: The Music, Volume 1," and much of the credit is due to one person: Adam Anders, who produces all Glee-related songs for the show and albums as well as the music for the forthcoming tour. It's a full-time job times two, which is why Anders has a musical partner more than 10,000 miles away working during the overnight hours. It's also a highly demanding one, when show creator Ryan Murphy is your boss.Of course Anders, who got his big break writing for Backstreet Boys a decade ago, isn't complaining. With over 56 million songs and nearly 10 million albums sold, and the promise by Columbia-Epic Label Group chairman Rob Stringer that Anders can work on the casts' future solo albums,...

Photo courtesy of Fox.com. Even before he landed the role as music supervisor on Glee—arguably the creamiest of the crop of such jobs currently available in the industry—Pj Bloom was, in my opinion, playing at the top of his game—choosing, negotiating, and incorporating musical selections into stellar entertainments (and I mean that, sincerely) that included Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Angels in America, Baywatch, Crazy/Beautiful, Cruel Intentions, Generation Kill, Gia, Good Hair, Maria Full of Grace, Nip/Tuck and about 7,000 other shows, movies, video games, and ads. Pj is so big-time, he was even tapped to help Disney update the soundtrack for the music in their theme parks. (Yes, he scored Space Mountain.) So with the double-punch combo of Glee garnering a pair of Grammy nominations last week, and landing another huge downloadable success with the Christmas Album connected to the “A Very Glee Christmas” episode that airs tonight,...

The only thing more popular than the Glee show on Fox may be the Glee music. Ever since the premiere episode, glee club versions of his songs have dominated the music charts. “Don’t Stop Believin’” led to “Somebody to Love” led to “Jump.” My personal favorite was the mash-up of “It’s My Life” and “Confessions.”

The Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film & TV Music Conference took a stroll down memory lane Fridy on Day 2 with an Ascap-sponsored panel that explored how the creative team behind the recent remake of the 1980 hit "Fame" updated the project for a new generation.
Director Kevin Tancharoen and composer Mark Isham discussed the pressure they felt to live up to the original Alan Parker film, which focused on the dreams of a diverse group of teens attending the New York City High School for the Performing Arts.
"I hold the original film on such a pedestal," Tancharoen said. "The fact that it wasn't a direct remake helped me. If we literally tried to replicate Parker's film, it would have been a mistake. Alan Parker made that movie perfectly."
Later, the creative team behind Fox's musical primetime phenom "Glee" discussed the pressures of living up to the past, albeit in a totally different context.

Why has Fox's "Glee" succeeded when so many musical television series have failed? Between the script, the song choices and the cast -- as well as production, marketing and Columbia Records working in lock step -- there isn't a weak link, the team behind the hit show said Friday.
Executives from Fox and Columbia joined the show's music supervisor P.J. Bloom, cast member Lea Michele and "Glee" music producer Adam Anders at the Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film & TV Music Conference to discuss what's driven millions of "Glee" song downloads and two forthcoming soundtrack volumes.
From the beginning, the strategy for setting up partnerships for the show was very different. Rather than keeping the pilot a secret, Fox presented it to as many music publishers and record labels as it could to get them on board for clearances from the get-go, said 20th Century Fox Television head of music Geoff Bywater.

I've never been a die-hard Nip/Tuck fan, but when I do catch an episode (or eight), I always enjoy it. The show, in keeping with the general theme of plastic surgery, is stylish to a fault and often, delightfully limit-pushing. The music, I believe, aids this; James Levine and P.J. Bloom have been putting together and picking the perfect accent tunes, respectively, since the show's beginning, and don't disappoint this season. Unsurprisingly, controversy has always surrounded the show due to the often graphic (both sexually and violently) nature of the plotlines.
Sean (Dylan Walsh) and Christian (Julian McMahon) own a plastic surgery practice together. They've lived in Florida for most of their career, but move to Los Angeles, the Holy Land of plastic surgery.
