Hector Ramirez, a cameraman known for live events and music and comedy specials who racked up 20 Emmys and scores of other nominations in a career spanning 44 years and 200-plus credits, has died. He was 78. His wife, Alma, posted the news on social media last week.
“Today I lost my husband, partner, friend, hero, protector, handyman and cameraman extraordinaire,” she wrote on January 11. “So many memories to behold in the 47 years of our marriage that my heart is broken and my world so much smaller. He was larger than life, a dad, grandfather, uncle, brother and loved by so many friends. He touched so many lives. He is deeply missed. No more pain baby, rest in peace and go and tell your stories to all the angels in heaven.”

John Driskell Hopkins gives us all the White Christmas feels with his swinging version of Irving Berlin’s “Snow.” The Zac Brown Band member taps into the song’s lineage too, enlisting Debby Boone to sing it with him — the “You Light Up My Life” singer’s mother-in-law, Rosemary Clooney, originally sang “Snow” with Bing Crosby and the gang in 1954’s White Christmas.
But Hopkins knows the best Christmas songs all have a little cheese in them, which he lays on thick here with a stellar assist from smooth-rock kings Yacht Rock Revue.

The 37th Grammy Awards, held in March 1995, were an especially influential ceremony thanks to Tony Bennett’s controversial Album of the Year win for “MTV Unplugged,” which led the academy to introduce their now-infamous and now-deceased nomination review committees to decide the ultimate contenders. But there was a more overlooked result that took place on the same night, and it was actually pretty rare: Sheryl Crow (“All I Wanna Do”) and Bruce Springsteen (“Streets of Philadelphia”) split the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, respectively. That was actually the last time that two songs split those awards when both songs were nominated in both categories.
Prior to Crow/Springsteen, Record and Song of the Year had split like that only seven times:
1963: “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” by Tony Bennett (Record) and “What Kind of Fool Am I?” by Sammy Davis Jr....

As country singers go, Crystal Gayle has long been a sparkling diamond in a rhinestone world. While the singer’s recently released You Don’t Know Me beautifully showcases her elegant, middle-of-the-road vocal delivery — a quality that led her to become one of the most successful crossover artists of the late Seventies — the record also pays homage to Gayle’s deep, abiding connection to vintage country music.
In the process, it becomes a heartwarming family affair as well. That family includes two sisters who co-wrote a country classic, “Don’t...

On Monday, Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” set a new record, topping Billboard’s Hot 100 for 17 weeks. To achieve this, the single kept six rival pop stars out of the top spot, garnered five remixes (don’t forget Cupcakke’s), lasted for more than four months, nearly spanned three Democratic debates, enjoyed two times as many chart points as the poor suckers in the Number Two position, and spawned one massive debate about the state of country music. (“Old Town Road” has also been Number One on Rolling Stone...

If you were sitting at home watching Sam Smith collect an Academy Award for his Spectre theme "Writing's on the Wall" and thinking, "Strange. I dislike that boring song and think Shirley Bassey would hate it too," you're in luck: Many of us agree and think it's a shockingly drippy entry in the 007 songbook. But is it the worst Oscar-winning song ever? A quick review of Oscar history says no. Phew. Let me first say that I defend several controversial song wins. I think "It Goes Like It Goes" from Norma Rae is as stirring as that year's touted loser "The Rainbow Connection," and I think "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" is as worthy of an Oscar as Dolly Parton's "Travelin' Thru." But the following three songs are not just bad Oscar winners; they're dubious pop culture sensations that scare me to revisit. Let's begin with a...

64 years ago today, the world was introduced to one of TV’s most celebrated couples, Lucy and Ricky. “I Love Lucy” premiered on CBS on October 15, 1951. The show made its mark by daring to address some major social issues of the 1950s, by changing the way television is taped with audiences, and by inventing the TV re-run. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz continue to get laughs out of generations of audiences, and their tale will soon be told in an Aaron Sorkin-penned biopic. Other notable October 15 happenings in pop culture history: • 1960: The 100th episode of “Perry Mason” aired on CBS. • 1965: Jimi Hendrix signed a three-year contract with entrepreneur Ed Chalpin. The contract later caused legal and career problems for Hendrix. • 1977: “You Light Up My Life” by Debby Boone started its reign on the Billboard Hot 100, knocking Meco’s disco take on the “Star Wars” theme from the top.

Two decades before Neil Patrick Harris dared to don a golden pair of go-go boots to portray the "internationally ignored song stylist" know as Hedwig Schmidt, John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask were perfecting the act on the New York City drag scene. In the wake of Hedwig and the Angry Inch's latest theatrical incarnation — which just racked up eight Tony nominations — we caught up with several of the creative minds who have contributed to Hedwig's past, present, and future to create an (appropriately) oral history.

Michael O'Neill, who's been so chillingly great during this season of "Bates Motel," is next going to be seen on CBS in "Extant," and the part of his character's daughter will be played by soon-to-be ex-"Grey's Anatomy" co-star Tessa Ferrer.
Per TV Guide, Ferrer (who is singer Debby Boone's daughter and also related to actors José, Miguel, and Rafael Ferrer) will recur as Katie Sparks, an over-achieving astronaut and the offspring of O'Neill's Alan Sparks, who serves as the director of the Isea.
Ferrer (pictured) currently plays Leah Murphy on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" but won't be returning next season so the timing couldn't be better for her transition from scrubs to spacesuit.
"Extant" premieres on Wednesday, July 9th, at 9/8c on CBS.
Synopsis:
"Extant" is a mystery thriller about a female astronaut, Molly (Halle Berry), who is trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space.

George Clooney is the kind of actor who can sneak into your casino and walk out with millions, save lives in surgery, and voice a sly, stealing fox.
This week we get to see Clooney up in space, acting his usual charming, slightly cocky self. In "Gravity" Clooney plays Matt Kowalski, a loquacious astronaut who blasts country music to feel close to home and rambles on about youthful memories.
While we've seen the Oscar winning actor for years on the big screen, there are probably a ton of things you didn't know about Clooney. From an aliment in his youth to his famous pet pig, check out these interesting facts about the star below.
1. In his youth Clooney worked in tobacco fields and took up smoking into his late 20s. He finally quit after one of his uncles died from lung cancer and has expressed his regret over it in many interviews.

The saying goes: If Hollywood is really the movie capital of the world, then Oscar night is the world’s biggest wrap party, and like all parties, each event comes with unwelcome guests, embarrassing situations, strange fashions and controversial moments. In fact, controversy and the Oscars seem to go hand in hand and despite the fact that the Academy Awards are, for the most part, an elegant and tightly controlled affair, some very strange things do occur. Let’s take a look back through the history of the Academy Awards, and some of it’s strangest and more controversial moments – which sadly were also the most memorable.

Joseph Brooks was hardly a household name, but his work became famous in 1977 when he penned the hit song “You Light Up My Life,” originally sung by Debby Boone. In fact, Brooks won an Oscar for the song, and went on to have a very prolific and successful career.
Unfortunately that career was marred recently by allegations of multiple sexual assaults, and over the weekend, as Brooks awaited trial for the charges, he took his own life. Authorities have said that Brooks left a three-page suicide note, which, among other things, discussed his health issues. Brooks is survived by a son, Nicholas Brooks, who himself is currently awaiting trial for murder.

Joseph Brooks, who killed himself yesterday at his Manhattan apartment, won an Oscar for the bestselling song "You Light Up My Life," from the movie of the same name which Brooks himself directed. Accompanied by several young girls, Debby Boone (photo), who reportedly claimed she dedicated the song to God every time she sang it, performed "You Light Up My Life" at the 1978 Academy Awards ceremony. Though nothing compared to the furor following Best Supporting Actress Vanessa Redgrave's acceptance speech, the wholesome "You Light Up My Life" engendered its own bit of ungodly controversy. After Boone's performance, host Bob Hope announced that the [...]...

Writer of You Light Up My Life, who was awaiting trial on sexual assault charges, apparently took his own life
Joseph Brooks, an Oscar-winning songwriter and film-maker accused of sexually assaulting more than a dozen women during fake movie auditions at his New York apartment, has been found dead after apparently taking his own life, police said.
Brooks, who won the Academy Award for best song in 1977 for You Light Up My Life, was awaiting trial on more than 90 charges, all of which he denied. He was found at his Manhattan apartment on Sunday by a friend with whom he had arranged to have lunch. Police said it was not clear how long the body had been there, but indicated that a suicide note had been found.

Joseph Brooks, who won an Oscar in 1977 for the song "You Light Up My Life," was found dead Sunday in his East Village apartment after an apparent suicide. Brooks, 73, was facing trial on 82 counts of sexual abuse. He is alleged to have raped 11 young women after luring them to his residence with the pretense of auditioning them for movie roles. It was a rather difficult fall for a man who not only wrote the tune "You Light Up My Life, which singer Debby Boone turned into a syrupy...

All good parents want to encourage their kids’ hopes, dreams and aspirations. However, when your daughter is obsessed with performing surgeries without a medical license, that might be a dream you want to quash. In Richard Bates Jr.‘s spectacularly unsettling short horror movie Excision, Pauline (Tessa Ferrer) is your typical rebellious, moody teenager, but instead of getting high or having sex, she prefers wielding a scalpel and a retractor. And, if you don’t happen to be a doctor and don’t know what a retractor does, well, watch the film to find out…
There are lots of elements that make Excision so effectively creepy and disturbing, from the grotesque premise to Bates’ tight script to the outlandish fantasy sequences contrasted with the mundanity of suburbia. However, the true heart and soul of the film — or should that be heart and guts — is the fully committed and twisted performance...

The Inspirational Song choices are available on iTunes, so we thought we'd offer some suggestions for the "American Idol" Top 7.
We will admit that the song list is rather weird -- some of the songs don't exactly strike us as "inspirational," plus you have to automatically discount certain songs. For example...
The Idols should probably steer clear of the other Idol songs. Like "A Moment Like This" is the No. 1 Kelly Clarkson "Idol" moment, so we're not sure they should try that one. Doing other Idol hits is just a little too meta. We'd call that a big no-no.
Then there are the over-played barf-worthy songs like "Greatest Love of All" and "That's What Friends Are For." We'd advise steering clear of those too, especially since "Greatest Love" should just be retired after Cordelia Chase did it for the "Buffy" talent show. Then there are a few duets on the list,...

Continuing along with her fashionable fun, Ke$ha was spotted out at Provocateur at The Hotel Gansevoort in New York City on Saturday night (February 13).
Sporting a stylish fur hat, the 22-year-old mingled with fellow attendee Mena Suvari while checking out the Alice + Olivia Fashion Week presentation and live performance.
As for her own career, Ke$ha’s “TiK ToK” retained the number one slot on the Billboard Hot 100 for the eighth straight week.
As a result, the blonde beauty becomes "the first female artist since 1977 to have her debut single spend that much time consecutively atop the Hot 100, with Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life” the last single to accomplish it."...

Party-loving pop star Ke$ha can add U.S. chart record holder to her resume after landing an eighth week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Her run at number one with "TiK ToK" marks the first time a female artist has held the top spot for eight weeks since Debby Boone hit the heights of the chart with "You Light Up My Life" in 1977.
Boone went on to spend 10 weeks on top. The Black Eyed Peas, who broke records with their 26-week run atop the charts in 2009, are back in the top three as "Imma Be" jumps from four to two, and Lady Antebellum become the first country group since Lonestar in 2000 to crack the Hot 100 top three at three with "Need You Now".

Prosecutors want to boost sexual assault charges against the Academy Award-winning songwriter behind "You Light Up My Life," who already is accused of 11 casting-couch rapes.Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Maxine Rosenthal said Tuesday prosecutors would ask a grand jury to add to the charges against Joseph Brooks, in part because of "additional victims." Meanwhile, a judge said the current charges alone would require three separate trials.Prosecutors wouldn't provide more details, but they previously suggested there might be as many as eight more victims beyond those Brooks already is accused of molesting.Brooks has pleaded not guilty to rape, sexual abuse and other charges. He's accused of luring most of the women to his Manhattan apartment through an online ad offering auditions for a movie role, then sexually assaulting them after making them drink apparently drugged wine as part of an "acting exercise."Brooks...

As this year's Oscars fade into memory, you can revisit some of the best bits from the telecast at the academy's official YouTube channel. Over there you will find the acceptance speeches for the top eight awards — picture, director, the four acting categories and both screenwriting races. And you can see host Hugh Jackman's standout opening number. Beyond that, there is a recap of the sci-tech winners by mistress of ceremonies Jessica Biel and a two-minute report on the nominees luncheon. But that is it. While the academy is understandably protective of its biggest asset — the Oscarcast — it is frustrating that more of the memorable moments from both this and previous years are not readily available.
Though the academy is stingy with sharing segments of the Oscarcast itself, it has become very generous at granting the public access to both backstage and the press room. Over at the official Oscar website,...
