Game, set and match for Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu and Tudor D. Popescu, who co-direct Nasty, a pleasingly hagiographic portrait of Romanian tennis icon Ilie Năstase. What fun tennis must have been in the 1970s, as it was on the turn from a knockabout sport into the sharp-footed profession it is today. Năstase and his contemporaries brought finesse and genius to the game, but tennis hadn’t yet been fully corrupted by corporate greed and mechanical elite athleticism. These players were hardworking and hard-partying in equal measure, and Năstase was a key ringleader for the frivolity, dating models, and canoodling on the mattresses at Studio 54.
He was also the sport’s chief antagonist a generation before John McEnroe took the mantle. Arguing with his fellow players and with the umpires. But he never questioned them when their calls were right, he insists, in one of the rare modern interview clips with Năstase himself.

Boris Becker and Nick Kyrgios have been beefing on social media lately after the Australian commented about former tennis greats, including the German.
Kyrgios is an outspoken individual who doesn't particularly care whether you like that. He's going to tell you what he thinks, and he certainly did in a recent interview with the Athletic when he compared tennis eras.
While tennis stars are generally quite complimentary of past legends, Kyrgios dissed the legacy of Becker and others by implying that they would struggle today.
Obviously, the comments went viral, with some agreeing with him and some disagreeing with him. At face value, the quality of tennis today is probably greater than in the past as simply everything evolved.
There is better equipment, better training, and better nutrition today, so it's natural to assume that today's tennis players are superior to those in the past.
And yet, comparing eras doesn't work.

Jannik Sinner has received enormous praise from his coach Darren Cahill, who compared him to tennis greats Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander.
The 22-year-old Italian has enjoyed his best season on tour in which he won his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto and ascended to a career-high ranking of World No. 4. Sinner's stellar year culminated with a historic Davis Cup triumph which catapulted him into Italian tennis folklore.
His coach Cahill has witnessed Sinner's development at a soaring pace in 2023. In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the 58-year-old highlighted Sinner's adaptability as his greatest strength and something that has impressed him the most.
Cahill drew parallels to the careers of Bjorg and Wilander, former Grand Slams champions. While Sinner is still relatively young and in the early phase of his career, the Australian believes he is already mature at his age because of his vast intelligence and competitive abilities.

Italian tennis icon Adriano Panatta does not have a "feeling of jealousy" that Jannik Sinner will shatter all his records, calling him an "exceptional" athlete.
Panatta, 73, remains the only Italian man in history to win a Grand Slam title when he triumphed at the 1976 French Open. He is also the only player to defeat Bjorn Borg, at the Parisian Slam, doing so on multiple occasions.
1976 was the pinnacle of Italian men's tennis. Aside from winning his only major title at Roland Garros, Panatta also bagged the Italian Open in Rome, where he saved an astonishing 11 match points in his first-round match. He attained a career-high of World No. 4 and finished that season by winning the Davis Cup for Italy.
It was not until 2023 that a genuine successor to Panatta emerged on the scene. Sinner has matched some of Panatta's major accomplishments including tying him as the best-ranked Italian man in...

Novak Djokovic's title-winning week at the Paris Masters earned him a place in the history books as a man for all surfaces.
Djokovic won the Paris Masters for an unprecedented seventh time last Sunday, and a 40th at Masters 1000 level, besting the in-form Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets. He extended his record indoors to 192-48, having won five matches during the week.
That figure translates to a winning percentage of precisely 80% which makes Djokovic one of just six men in the Open Era with a career percentage of 80% or higher indoors, trailing only Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, and indoor king John McEnroe.
But here's the kicker. Djokovic has put together a monumental feat that none of those five men or the rest of the tour (retired or active) have managed. He has an 80% or higher winning record on all recognized surfaces and environments on the Atp Tour - hard,...

Of all the records that Novak Djokovic has chalked down, his next one will most certainly stand out for many years to come.
Djokovic begins a 398th week atop the men's rankings (the most of any singles player on either tour) and is also guaranteed to make it 399th next week when he heads to Turin to defend his crown at the Atp Finals.
No player in singles has attained the 400-week mark. The Serbian will need just one round-robin match win to cement his spot as the Atp's World No. 1 for a jaw-dropping 400th week after the Atp Finals.
It will be mathematically impossible for Carlos Alcaraz to stop him should that scenario materialize. With a gap of 2,990 points in the live rankings, Djokovic might not even need to win a match at the Atp Finals should Alcaraz lose one of his round-robin matches.
Either way, this year's race...

Holger Rune was hilariously mistaken for Casper Ruud during his quarterfinal match at the 2023 Swiss Indoors in Basel.
There have been multiple great tennis players from Scandinavia competing on the Atp Tour over the years, but funnily enough, they all came from Sweden. Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, and Stefan Edberg were enormously successful, but in the 21st century, we haven't seen a successful Scandinavian for a long time.
That's why it was also a bit surprising when two major talents emerged from the region at the same time, and on top of that, none of them was from Sweden. Holger Rune is arguably the best male tennis player to ever come from Denmark, while the same applies to Casper Ruud in Norway.
Apart from being from Scandinavia, the two have a few more things in common, one of them is that their surname starts with letters R and U, and...

Tennis fans braced themselves for a major spectacle at this year's Laver Cup , but Team World's dominant march to the title with three matches to spare left them massively disappointed.
Team Europe had won each of the first four editions of the Laver Cup, but there was a shift in power that began last year when Team World stunned the world to win their first Laver Cup championship against the team with a gaudy lineup including all members of the Big 3.
But the absence of key names in Team Europe's squad for this year's tournament proved telling. Roger Federer retired from professional tennis last autumn. Rafael Nadal is recovering from a serious hip injury, while Novak Djokovic's busy schedule rendered it impossible to feature.
The Big 3 weren't the only absentees. Team Europe couldn't count on the services of Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev, who were both recuperating from a physically brutal North American summer.

Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe secured the needed win to secure the 2023 Laver Cup for Team World.
Last year, Team World made history to win their first-ever Laver Cup . This year, the team led by captain John McEnroe had a difficult job, and that was to defend the title against Team Europe which was seeking revenge.
However, after Holger Rune withdrew from the tournament , and Stefanos Tsitsipas did the same thing , the chances of Bjorn Borg 's Team Europe started to get smaller.
On the first two days, Team World dominated, as Team Europe managed to win only one match, and that was thanks to Casper Ruud, who was scheduled to play the second match on Day 3, but he withdrew due to an injury. Yet, to get to that match, Team Europe first needed to win a doubles match, and for that, Andrey Rublev teamed up with Hubert Hurkacz .

Roger Federer is in the house for the 2023 Laver Cup and he hinted at being in the house regularly in the future.
As the person who came up with the concept that eventually became the Laver Cup, Federer looks at the event very fondly. He left a huge mark on the sport, but this event is 'his baby' in a way. After all, his retirement at the event didn't happen by chance.
He could have picked Wimbledon, Basel, or any other Atp event, but he picked the Laver Cup. In any case, the Swiss former player has been present at most Laver Cup editions, whether as a player or an ambassador for the event.
He's also in Vancouver this year, where he spoke about possibly becoming a captain, something that many fans speculated about for a long time. The current captains of the respective teams are Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe.

Carlos Alcaraz is part of an exclusive club of players with the highest winning percentage at Grand Slam level before turning 21.
Alcaraz defeated Germany's Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to advance into another semifinal at the US Open , keeping his title defense intact. He'll take on Daniil Medvedev in a rematch of the Wimbledon semifinal just two months ago.
The 20-year-old's swashbuckling performance against Zverev earned him his 41st match win in the main draw of a Grand Slam. According to Opta, Alcaraz improved to an 83.7% winning record at the majors among players before turning 21, surpassing Mats Wilander and moving into second spot.

The 2023 Laver Cup rooster has been confirmed, and it is fair to say tennis fans have offered mixed opinions about the first edition post-Roger Federer's retirement.
While the two teams both boast talented names , some of whom are entrenched in the world's Top 10, the apparent lack of transcendent names has been frowned upon by tennis fans on social media. The early inference is that scheduling has played a big factor.
John McEnroe spoke to the media , where he was quizzed about the tournament's evolution from featuring some marquee names to missing the famous Big Four and even the current top three in the Atp rankings.
McEnroe stated that scheduling is sometimes an issue with players as the Laver Cup is intertwined between a Grand Slam event and a completely different swing, but called for relevant stakeholders to support it.

You don't really have to know tennis history in depth to understand how special Carlos Alcaraz truly is. The fact that he's being mentioned regularly among the Big Three is proof enough that his stuff is that of a special type.
Alcaraz, in many ways, does resemble the Big Three because the things he's been able to do so early in his career are not the norm. There are very few tennis players who did that, which is easily demonstrated through various milestones.
He's the youngest number one ever on the Atp Tour, which is incredible, he's also the 5th youngest to ever win two Grand Slams. The second one happened recently in London as he defeated Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final to get it done.

Sweden's number one player on the Atp Tour, Mikael Ymer has been suspended from tennis for 18 months after a complicated situation resolved badly for him.
Ymer has been Sweden's top player for a while, even though he has been nowhere near the Top 10 as the country struggles to replicate some of the historic success it had with players like Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander.
Ymer is currently ranked number 51 with a pretty decent season behind though not one devoid of controversy. Earlier this year, the Swede made headlines after being defaulted from a match due to breaking his racquet onto the umpire's chair and damaging it.
He was heavily fined for that , and now he's out of tennis after a sequence of events that ultimately resulted in a suspension from the sport. Ymer explained the story with a long post on Twitter , and we will bring you a breakdown of the situation.

Carlos Alcaraz expressed some serious doubt about his level on grass leading up to Wimbledon but it's actually been really good.
Carlos Alcaraz is one talented tennis player, and while many argue that talent is not everything and can only take you so far, it can actually take you pretty far. Alcaraz is proving it this year with his performances on grass, a surface where he doesn't feel that comfortable .
He's a fast learner, so learning how to play on the surface quickly is hardly a surprise, but when you watch him play, it's clear that he still has a long way to go. The greatness of his talent is good enough to push him past many players, including fellow rising stars on the Atp Tour.
He's in the semi-final, where he'll play against Daniil Medvedev for a place in the Wimbledon final. It's only his 3rd Wimbledon, and possibly...

Carlos Alcaraz will contest his maiden grass final at the 2023 Cinch Championships on Sunday after cruising past a fellow rising star.
The Spaniard advanced to his maiden grass final by beating Sebastian Korda in the semi-final . The match was highly anticipated as Korda was playing a superb event with many assuming him to be a minor favourite. That didn't prove true on the court as Alcaraz was able to produce his best tennis yet to win the match and secure the final.
His level in London comes as a surprise to many including himself as he expressed serious doubts about being able to win the event . A few wins showed him that it's possible for him to play good tennis on the surface and now he's flying high with confidence .

The uncle of Andy Murray , Niall Erskine slammed Wimbledon for leaving Andy Murray off of their most recent promotional photo.
Wimbledon hasn't even started and we've already seen several controversies regarding the event. The event has been doing a very active promotional campaign ahead of it but they made a few choices that left fans angered. First, they published a teaser that didn't really feature Novak Djokovic angering his fans .
Then the Serbian was left off of the promotional poster leaving his fans even more angered. He was not the only player missing from that poster as Wta defending champion Elena Rybakina also wasn't on it. After public outcry, the event updated the poster adding both Djokovic and Rybakina.
Now they've been slammed by the uncle of Andy Murray for leaving him off of the latest promo material which highlights some of the more iconic rivalries the event saw over the years.

Wimbledon angered many fans by creating a promotional campaign for the 2023 edition that barely featured Novak Djokovic .
Wimbledon is the most famous tennis event in the year but it's not one of the slickest. Yes, 99 percent of it goes really smoothly but when they have an 'oopsie' it's quite a one. We've seen years of campaigns before they finally relaxed a notorious rule that troubled a lot of women during the event. We've seen loud calls to abolish some other rules but some of those rules are what make Wimbledon...Wimbledon.
They made another oopsie this year which left fans really angered. The promotional material for this year's event was done very well except for the fact that it's missing Novak Djokovic . It's not entirely missing it but for a player who won the event 7 times, 4 of the latest editions no less , he was barely featured. And when we say barely we mean barely.

Wimbledon posted an official teaser for the upcoming edition of the event but it was missing a prominent part for Novak Djokovic , leaving fans enraged.
Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest players in tennis history, quite possibly the greatest as his recent Roland Garros run proved. An iconic triumph that furthered the legacy of the Serbian is best represented through various records that happened during his journey towards the trophy.
The Serbian will likely extend his legacy further at Wimbledon, an event where he proved almost as dominant as Roger Federer whom everyone considers the best grass-court player of all time. Djokovic won the tournament 7 times, four times in a row, and will likely add another trophy in a month.

The 2023 Laver Cup will see Team World try and defend the first trophy they won at the Laver Cup though Europe will have Casper Ruud in the team.
The Laver Cup has become one of the most popular Atp events in the world due to the unique format and generally exciting field of players. This year's edition will see Team World host the event and it will be played in Vancouver, Canada which should be an interesting experience.
A few players have been announced already with Ruud becoming the 4th Team Europe player to be announced. Holger Rune will be part of the team this year , as well as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev , even though there won't be Daniil Medvedev for Europe. Team Captain Borg is happy to welcome a fellow Scandinavian into the team:
Casper is an exceptionally talented and dedicated young athlete making his way to the top of the sport.

Novak Djokovic 's 2023 Roland Garros was historic but just how historic was it? The numbers can explain that the best.
Novak Djokovic won the 2023 Roland Garros by beating Casper Ruud in the final and he became the first man ever to win 23 Grand Slam titles. That's one of the many records he broke during this run and while the most important one, it's certainly not the only one.
He also became the only player to win each of four of the grand slams at least three times , and he also replaced Roger Federer as the player with the best tiebreak winning percentag e . All of that makes this run very iconic but there are plenty of other things he was able to complete at this year's French Open.
Another impressive achievement is the Serb being the player who has the most season with multiple Grand Slam wins. Djokovic has now...

John McEnroe has questioned tennis' need for physical umpires and also said he would have been less entertaining if Hawkeye was invented during his era.
McEnroe won seven Grand Slams and enjoyed a dominant spell in men's tennis between 1979 and 1984 when he won all of his major titles. But, his success was not without controversy. The American was infamous for challenging umpire calls, leading to his most famous, "you cannot be serious" incident at Wimbledon in 1981.
However, the invention of Hawkeye in the modern game has lessened the need for human umpires to make line calls. When reflecting on the topic in a Radio Times interview, McEnroe challenged the role of umpires and believes he would have won more titles with Hawkeye on his side.
“I think that tennis is one of the few sports where you don’t need umpires or linesmen. If you have this equipment, and it’s accurate,...

Paris, May 29 (Ians) Playing as the top seed in a Grand Slam for the first time, World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain wasted little time getting his title quest underway at the French Open on Monday when he raced past Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to reach the second round.
Italian qualifier Cobolli put up a fight in the third set and saved three match points on his own serve to hold for 4-5 against Alcaraz, then broke the Spaniard to level for 5-5.
Alcaraz then nudged ahead with a break of serve for 6-5 and this time did not falter when serving for the victory, as he started his campaign on a winning note and booked a second-round meeting with Taro Daniel.

Rune and Ruud played a couple of times already and this was the first time the Dane was able to defeat the Norwegian. It was a really entertaining match with some drama on top of great play by both players with Rune emerging victorious.
Their rivalry is more than your typical one because they exchanged some words after their match in Paris last year. New Delhi, April 24 (Ians) Spain’s young tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz has said he is not planning to take over from Rafael Nadal and intends to build his “own history”.

Boris Becker revealed that Novak Djokovic gets motivated when the crowd supports his opponent more than him.
The German used to coach Djokovic for a time and he knows him pretty well. The Serb considers him a friend and called him and spoke in his favour during his trial last year that sent him to prison for a few months. Djokovic being emotional is nothing new, we've seen it numerous times but Becker provided more insight into his personality.
Novak is very emotional. He always gets temperamental when the crowd supports the other guy. And he's using that to show with his fingers off into the crowd that you have woken me up now. I'm going to beat this guy.

The World vs. Boris Becker, a new two-part documentary about the German tennis great who famously won Wimbledon at the age of 17 before going down like the Hindenburg, encapsulates what’s made the athlete such a controversial figure. Ion Tiriac, a Romanian businessman who managed Becker at the height of his powers, from 1984 to 1993, compares the athlete to “a child” tempting fate by repeatedly sticking his finger into a flame.

The Atp Tour is always changing and one of the changes is taking place right now as the old generation is retiring and young guns are winning big titles.
Roger Federer was the first player from the Big Three to end his career and Rafael Nadal is also struggling with injuries recently. In the meantime, Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest world no. 1 in the world in the history of men's tennis and also the youngest man to reclaim the spot again.
Holger Rune lifted the Paris Masters trophy and entered the Top 10 and Jannik Sinner is solid at almost every major tournament. Also throw in the like of Ben Shelton, who is also one of the rising stars and the future of tennis looks very promising.
However, it's important to promote the sport of tennis and these new players that we may be seeing in the years to come. Bjorn Borg...

Novak Djokovic is still playing unbelievable tennis despite soon turning 36 and Bjorn Borg predicts that he'll win a couple more majors.
Bjorn Borg knows how it feels to win a Grand Slam trophy as he lifted 11 of those in his career. However, after his retirement, a generation of the Big Three started and Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal both won twice as many majors as the Swede, lifting 22 Grand Slams.
Yet, their situation is very different at the moment. While Djokovic won five Grand Slams over the past three seasons, Nadal managed to win only two and that's also one of the reasons why Borg said on the Atp Tennis Podcast that the Serb may win one or two more in his career.
“Novak I think he might win one or two more Grand Slam tournaments, who knows, but what he is doing for tennis in general is unbelievable. He’s still pushing the limits,...

Bjorn Borg believes that Novak Djokovic is likely to end up as Goat because his hunger for success is what is going to push him.
Nobody should question Djokovic's hunger and motivation because he carved out possibly the greatest tennis career of all time at a time when both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were at their peak. You don't do that by chance and Borg is certain that Djokovic isn't done as he revealed in a talk to Eurosport.
Novak [Djokovic], I think he might win one or two more Grand Slam tournaments. Who knows? But he is doing it not for himself but for tennis and journalists. Unbelievable. He's still pushing the limits. He wants to be the greatest.
The dominance level of Djokovic in recent years has been astounding because he doesn't seem to be losing a step. He practically waltzed his way to a historic 10th Australian...

Prolific documentarian Alex Gibney hates liars. He hates when companies lie (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room); he hates when religions lie (Going Clear, Mea Maxima Culpa); he hates when authority figures lie (The Inventor, Client 9).
The Rosetta Stone for Gibney’s dogmatic resistance to mendacity is The Armstrong Lie. Gibney’s irritation arises not just from the general lies that Lance Armstrong told the world, but from the lies that Lance Armstrong told him during the making of the movie, yielding a documentary about the nature of deception and self-deception.
Gibney’s new two-part Apple TV+ docuseries Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker is a complementary text to The Armstrong Lie. It’s about a revered sports icon whose falsehoods eventually led to personal disgrace. It’s structured around two extensive interviews conducted at different points in the subject’s prevarication — once in delusion and once when facing a reckoning.
