As I’m sure many filmmakers have experienced, pitching stories from the heart can often be an advantage which is exactly the experience Writer/Director Grant Taylor had with his touching comedy drama Ecstasy. When the unexpected opportunity arose to pitch at Cine Circle, he pulled directly from his own experiences with his father’s Parkinson’s diagnosis and the keen memory of a documentary he had watched about the positive effects of the infamous party drug on sufferers. The resulting film – starring British actors Brian Bovell and Nathan Bryon as a father and son on a mission to score – is a richly entertaining short which follows the pair’s near disastrous attempts to give a man an opportunity to dance with his wife at her birthday party. Taylor worked closely with his own father and cast to provide an authentic view of the suffering inherent with Parkinson’s and...

"I have no idea who you are or how I got here." Vertical Ent has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Solitary, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Luke Armstrong, who finished this film last year during lockdown. This is another low budget sci-fi film with a cool concept that could turn out bad, or could be pretty good. Solitary is a contained sci-fi film about a man who wakes up inside a room to discover he's a prisoner sent into space to form Earth's first colony, and worse - his cell mate Alana is hell bent on destroying everything. Starring Johnny Sachon and Lottie Tolhurst as the two prisoners, with Michael Condron, Brian Bovell, and Ben Valentine. This kind of even feels like a lockdown film - two people contained in a studio apartment, in space, arguing about what to do when they get out.

The year is 2044, there is a lot more people on the planet and they are running out of stuff… in this ambitious, sci-fi action film; which IMDb estimates it cost 10,000 pounds to make. I cannot help but appreciate the aspiration of writer, and director, Luke Armstrong. One of the most ambitious effects in Solitary, is the comb over on our heroes’ head. Issac Havelock, the name of our follically challenged hero is a superb sci-fi meta joke. As is calling the computer “Eva.”
Issac wakes up in a capsule, with a lady. Both seem to have committed serious crimes and they are floating in space above the earth. Suddenly there is an explosion, and some level of confusion.
What follows is a slow burn, mystery whodunnit as our “Adam and...

Franco Rosso's Babylon star Brinsley Forde with Ed Bahlman and Dennis Bovell at Bam: "Let's be honest, a film like that had never been done before. We had The Harder They Come, the films from Jamaica, but nothing from the UK." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

When I arrived with Ed Bahlman (99 Records) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for my conversations with Brinsley Forde and Dennis Bovell, two key figures for Franco Rosso's Babylon, co-written with Martin Stellman, produced by Gavrik Losey, and shot by two-time Oscar winner Chris Menges (for Roland Joffé's The Killing Fields and The Mission), Brinsley, Dennis, and Seventy-Seven founder Gabriele Caroti were standing in the lobby. Ed greeted Dennis and they immediately reconnected by sharing memories of The Slits, Viv Albertine's memoir, Chris Blackwell, Adrian Sherwood, Pop Group, Mark Stewart, Public Image Ltd, Bruce Smith, Neneh Cherry, Linton Kwesi Johnson, the Reggae Lounge, and of course, Ari Up and the making of Cut.

When (or if) you think of urban UK film, you may immediately think Noel Clarke. However, while he may be the biggest fish, Clarke isn’t the only one swimming in that pool. Based on the cult novel of the same name by Q (aka Ashanti Power, aka Kwabena Manso), two years ago, Deadmeat won awards on both sides of the pond, Best British Feature at the Bfm Film Festival (London, UK), as well as an Accolade Award for Excellence (Hollywood, Us) and is now due to be released on DVD this week… in the UK, anyway.
Written, directed by and starring Q, Deadmeat is a gritty urban thriller which explores London’s gangland dark underbelly in a chilling tale of revenge killings and betrayal.
While Clarke’s earlier films, KidultHood and AdultHood, gained an avid youth following thanks mainly to their somewhat realistic potrayal of bleak UK inner city life,...
