With "Avengers: Endgame" behind us and Chris Evans having retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe until further notice, we can all agree that "Captain America: The First Avenger" is the best Steve Rogers solo film, right? From its character work to its action sequences and a rousing score by the legendary Alan Silvestri, director Joe Johnston's WWII adventure is a top-tier MCU movie. While it may lack the visceral melees that the Russo Brothers brought to its sequels, "The First Avenger" delivers more than enough whiz-bang thrills and Brooklyn attitude to make up the difference (that and its politics are much less confused than those of "The Winter Soldier").
Johnston's superhero picture also boasts what is still one of the McU's most distinguished casts, pairing Evans with Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, and Dominic Cooper. Even Natalie Dormer, David Bradley,...

Here’s your first look at Christian Bale’s suited-up as Frankenstein’s monster in actress-turned-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal’s take on the classic monster with The Bride, her forthcoming feature at Warner Bros.
Gyllenhaal shared the first look of Bale today on her Instagram, alongside an image of Jessie Buckley as “The Bride.”

A post shared by Maggie Gyllenhaal (@mgyllenhaal)
Bale and Buckley star in the pic alongside Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard. The film’s logline reads: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.
The movie is being produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler (The Lost Daughter), and Osnat Handelsman-Keren (The Lost Daughter). EPs are Courtney Kivowitz (The Lost Daughter) and Carla Raij.
The pic will mark Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort following The Lost Daughter, her screen adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, and Jessie Buckley. The film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Actress (Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Buckley), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Gyllenhaal).
The Bride is currently slated for release in IMAX on October 3, 2025. The pic is just the first Frankenstein adaptation audiences can expect on the big screen soon. Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has a Frankenstein feature set at Netflix with Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery signed on to star.

Christian Bale is Frankenstein’s monster in a first look at Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride.” The director, who is teaming up with Warner Bros. for the period film, shared images on Instagram from a recent camera test for the movie. Bale’s monster makes his debut alongside Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter” Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley as the eponymous bride.
Gyllenhaal has assembled an all-star cast for “The Bride.” Starring opposite Bale and Buckley are Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Annette Bening. The film’s crew includes “Joker” cinematographer Lawrence Sher.
“The Bride” is set in 1930s Chicago and puts a spin on the iconic Frankenstein lore. Buckley’s murdered young woman is revived, but her new life surprises her creators as she lusts for romance and ignites a radical social movement. Those of you who love martial arts movies and follow our JoBlo Original, Reel Action, on YouTube may have seen the recent spotlight we did on the Mark Dacascos 1993 capoeira movie, Only the Strong. While Only the Strong should have skyrocketed Dacascos to martial arts stardom, he would actually have an earlier credit with a smaller role in a film called American Samurai, which starred David Bradley of the American Ninja sequels. American Samurai would come from the director of many Ninja-related movies, Sam Firstenberg, for the infamous once-upon-a-movie studio, Cannon Films. Sam Firstenberg was a director who the studio often collaborated with, but American Samurai would be the first movie that Cannon took their famous scissors to and alter the film against the director’s vision.
A group on Facebook called The Official Restoration of American Samurai has been established with some news for fans of the film and genre.

Remember the first year of Russell T Davies reboot of Doctor Who? That season eased viewers back into the world of the Doctor, re-establishing a few classic villains such as the Daleks and the Autons, but also using the Time War as an excuse for avoiding references to the past.
Contrast that to the past few years, in which the show has no concerns with going back to previous adventures. Modern Doctors have met previous incarnations — sometimes in older form (as in the returns of Peter Davison and Tom Baker), sometimes recast (as in the case of David Bradley stepping in for William Hartnell), and sometimes in digital form (basically every other case). Classic villains have returned, not just the Master, the Daleks, or Cybermen, but even odd-balls like the Toymaker, whose one previous appearance can’t be watched in any form anymore. Most common, Doctor Who has brought back past companions,...

Netflix is bringing Frankenstein to the popular streaming service.
Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro will adapt Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) and Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front) join Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth in Frankenstein. Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher), David Bradley (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) also join the ensemble.
Frankenstein continues Netflix’s partnership with del Toro, including the Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature Film, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and the animated films Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia.

Guillermo del Toro is working on his own adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Deadline reports today that Jacob Elordi will take over the role of Frankenstein’s iconic monster for actor Andrew Garfield.
Elordi joins previously announced cast members Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Oscar Isaac, who will play Victor Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein follows brilliant scientist Victor Frankenstein, who brings his monster to life in an experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation. It feels safe to assume that del Toro will bring heightened emotions and sympathy for Frankenstein’s creation.
The acclaimed filmmaker previously said of his Frankenstein at the 10th-anniversary screening of Pacific Rim, “I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein.

It’s alive! Alive!
Indeed, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein film is officially a go at Netflix, with Deadline reporting that the director has signed rising star Jacob Elordi to play Frankenstein’s monster. He replaces Andrew Garfield, who had to bail on the part due to scheduling conflicts arising from the SAG/AFTRA strikes. While some may be disappointed that Garfield won’t be playing the role, Elordi’s a rising star, with him a breakout lead on Euphoria and recently earning raves for his co-starring role in Saltburn. He also plays Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla.
Elordi, who stands a mighty 6’5, seems a clever choice to play the sympathetic monster. Given that it’s a Guillermo del Toro movie, I expect something radically different from a straight-ahead adaptation of Mary Shelley’s work. Perhaps, by casting a heartthrob like Elordi, Del Toro might be taking a...

Jacob Elordi is expanding his auteur collaborations and will star in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming “Frankenstein” as the titular monster.

Schitt’s Creek co-creator, Dan Levy, brings us an authentic tale of complicated love, gut-wrenching loss and anguished healing in his directorial debut, Good Grief – currently streaming on Netflix. Serving as writer, director, producer and lead actor in the comedy-drama, Good Grief serves as a reminder of the well-rounded talents of Levy himself, above all else. Yet, the film arguably leaves viewers wanting more – and not in the way Levy may have intended.
Good Grief sees Dan Levy play the role of Marc Dreyfus; a married painter turned children’s book illustrator struggling to deal with the losses of his husband and mother. The film follows Marc’s grief alongside his ragtag best friends, Thomas (Himesh Patel) and Sophie (Ruth Negga), each with their own problems in love. While Marc combats the sheer emptiness that comes with the tragic death of your other half, Thomas ponders why he is unable to...

The London and Paris locations are pretty, the likable cast all look stylish in their voluminous coats and slouchy pants and distressed knits, and the countless teary-eyed close-ups are designed to touch our hearts. But Netflix’s Good Grief, despite its characters’ extensive soul-dredging, is all surface, perfectly watchable but a little dull. Working both behind and in front of the camera after having cut his teeth directing episodes of Schitt’s Creek, Daniel Levy has made a first feature that’s a glossy drama of love and loss and the restorative power of friendship. But it’s more earnest than affecting.
The opening scene makes this, if not a Christmas movie, then a Christmas-adjacent one. Levy plays Marc, a London artist who has put aside his own creative work to serve as illustrator on the best-selling series of fantasy novels written by his adored husband, Oliver (Luke Evans), about telepathic truth-seeker Victoria Valentine,...

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Zachari Levi, Thandiwe Newton, Bella Ramsey, Romesh Ranganathan, Daniel Mays, David Bradley, and Miranda Richardson
Director: Sam Fell
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Movie Review Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: Aardman Animations continues to push their stop-motion art to a new level, and it is quite impressive what they have achieved 23 years after the original.
What’s Bad: The new voice cast does a great job, but they lack the raw energy of the original cast.
Loo Break: You can take a break during some of the musical sequences, they look great, but they are not that vital to the plot.
Watch or Not?: It feels like the right thing to watch the film, even if it is just to support Aardman Animations and their soon-to-be lost craft.

Dan Levy, helped along by friends, confronts personal loss and grief he’d been trying to evade in the trailer for Netflix’s Good Grief, which the Schitt’s Creek co-creator wrote, directs and stars in.
Levy plays Marc Dreyfus, whose contented life in London after the loss of his mother with his larger-than-life husband, Oliver, played by Luke Evans, ends when Oliver unexpectedly dies. As Marc’s world shatters, he and his two best friends, played by Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel, go on a weekend of self-discovery in Paris to reveal hard truths they each needed to face.
“My husband officially died a year ago today. For such a meticulous person, he left behind one hell of a mess,” an anguished Marc announces at one point in the trailer.

Sam Fell’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget finds Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi) settled down on a bucolic island sanctuary that’s entirely free of humans, their daring Great Escape-style breakout from Tweedy’s industrial farm now a distant memory. But while they and old friends like Babs (Jane Horrocks) and Fowler (David Bradley) appreciate their hard-won freedom, their young daughter, Molly (Bella Ramsey), is now at an age where this safe haven is beginning to feel like its own form of captivity.
Defying her parents’ wishes and heading out in search of adventure, Molly soon finds herself in trouble on the mainland that the older members of her flock once fought so heroically to leave. And it’s not long before their old foe, Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson), re-emerges with a new diabolical scheme—one that allows the basic premise of Peter Lord and...

What have you been up to this week? Myself, I’ve been watching a lot of Doctor Who; flitting back and forth between eras, staring bemusedly at a colourised version of “The Daleks” with its bewildering new edit and shouting in excitement when Ncuti Gatwa winked at David Bradley, before popping off to revisit “Partners in Crime” ahead of this – the main event.
From an era when the show was an international phenomenon, the leading lights of Doctor Who have reunited, both in front of and behind the camera. Their unspoken mission statement is clear: do whatever is needed to make the show, which has demonstrably declined in popularity in recent years, a certified smash once again.
And so, with the band back together, they’ve chosen to begin by playing the old hits. Familiar Doctor, familiar catchphrases, familiar London.

Ncuti Gatwa has made his first official broadcast appearance as the Fifteenth Doctor in a re-edited version of An Adventure In Space and Time, the Doctor Who special that first aired in 2013. In honor of the long-running sci-fi series’ 60th anniversary, the U.K.’s BBC Four re-aired the 2013 special, which was originally part of the show’s 50th anniversary and chronicled the development of Doctor Who from conception to super hit. Game of Thrones alum David Bradley played First Doctor actor William Hartnell in the special, which ends with Hartnell seeing a vision of the current Doctor as he films his final episode, 1966’s “The Tenth Planet,” showing him that the future of the show is in good hands. In the original broadcast, Matt Smith, who was portraying the Eleventh Doctor at the time, appeared in Hartnell’s vision. However, in the new, re-edited version, Gatwa’s Doctor, who...

Well, it was supposed to have been a surprise. Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa let the cat somewhat out of the bag at the GQ Men of the Year awards on November 16, when he announced to The Mirror “I shouldn’t say this but I shot a scene, somehow, with the first ever Doctor, William Hartnell.”
Doctor Who fans put two and two together, correctly guessing that Gatwa didn’t mean the actual William Hartnell, who passed away in 1975, but the version of him played by actor David Bradley – first in 2013 docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time about the creation of Doctor Who, and subsequently in “The Doctor Falls”, “Twice Upon a Time” and “The Power of the Doctor”.
Knowing that An Adventure in Space and Time had yet to appear as part of BBC iPlayer’s extensive Whoniverse, and was scheduled for a BBC Four repeat on the night of the 60th anniversary,...

Asa Butterfield and the rest of the cast return for festive follow up Your Christmas Or Mine 2, here’s the trailer.
Your Christmas Or Mine landed on Amazon Prime last year, and it went down really rather well.
The plot saw Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk play young couple James and Hayley who, upon deciding that they don’t want to be apart for Christmas after all, get on each other’s respective trains and find themselves at the others’ family home. Fuelled by farcical misunderstandings, the film is a solid slice of festive fun. It’s no Planes, Trains & Automobiles of course, but then again, what is.
Still! We’re getting more of it, and Your Christmas Or Mine 2 looks set to stick to the same formula. Think of it as a bit Home Alone 2 to Home Alone, if you will.
The synopsis reads as follows:...

The last time (and only time) Aardman Animations made a sequel to one of its beloved stop-motion animated features, the result was "A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon," a pretty charming love letter to classic sci-fi cinema. So the bar is set even higher for "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," the long-awaited follow-up to "Chicken Run." The studio's 2000 riff on "The Great Escape" is still the highest-grossing stop-motion animated movie of all time and, for some animation enthusiasts, remains Aardman's crowning achievement, which is no minor feat. I mean, we're talking about the same studio that "28 Days Later" director Danny Boyle praised for creating "the best action sequence I've ever seen in a film" in "Wallace and Gromit -- The Wrong Trousers."
"Dawn of the Nugget" sees the feathered freedom fighter fowl formerly found flocking on Tweedy's Farm living out their dreams of paradise on a lovely island bird sanctuary.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Trailer: Aardman Animations’ Long-Awaited Sequel Arrives in December
Arriving nearly a quarter of a century after its predecessor, and this time with no Mel Gibson anywhere to be seen, the sequel to Chicken Run will now land on Netflix exactly a month from today. Helmed by ParaNorman director Sam Fell, the sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget features the voice cast of Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, Bella Ramsey, Romesh Ranganathan, David Bradley, Daniel Mays, Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, Lynn Ferguson, Josie Sedgwick-Davies, Nick Mohammed, and Miranda Richardson, and now ahead of a December 15 release, the first trailer has arrived.
Oliver Weir said in his review, “Many people (this reviewer included) scoffed at the announcement of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Something about the ludicrous title and 23-year hiatus gave the air of a studio in desperation, or one searching for an Oscar contender. How wrong we were. Prime Video has debuted the trailer for the Christmas movie sequel ‘Your Christmas or Mine 2.’
The follow-up follows young couple James (Asa Butterfield), and Hayley (Cora Kirk), who are gearing up for their second Christmas as a couple. And that can only mean one thing … more mayhem with the Taylor and Hughes families.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year … but will it be for James and Hayley? James’ father has invited the Taylors to spend Christmas in a luxury ski resort in the Austrian Alps, so they can meet his new American girlfriend (played by Jane Krakowski). However, Hayley’s dad Geoff insisted on handling his family’s side of the booking and something clearly got lost in translation. After a mix-up with transport at the airport, the two tribes end up at each other’s accommodations, on different sides of a valley and opposite ends of the Tripadvisor ratings scale.

Many people (this reviewer included) scoffed at the announcement of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Something about the ludicrous title and 23-year hiatus gave the air of a studio in desperation, or one searching for an Oscar contender. How wrong we were. For in spite of the long wait and changes of personnel––Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton replace Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha; Sam Fell replaces Nick Park and Peter Lord––this latest adventure is every bit as well-crafted, cleverly written, and stuffed with gallinaceous puns as its predecessor.
We rejoin the flock, like the cast, in much-changed circumstances. For one thing, they have built a small island paradise––it looks more like the Shire than Yorkshire––where they are free to work and roam without the threat of human intervention. There is also a lively new addition to the group: Rocky and Ginger’s chirpy chick Molly,...

The British production company Aardman, best known for award-winning shorts such as the evergreen Creature Comforts and short-to-feature franchises like Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, specializes in “Claymation,” stop-motion animation done using figurines made of clay and similar material. Even by the glacial standards of animation practice, they take ages to produce new work. You might say their output is rare as hens’ teeth, to quote a Britishism, which is apt because their most successful feature (and the highest-grossing stop-motion film ever) is still Chicken Run (2000), a family-friendly film set on a 1950s chicken farm that stars a brood of fowl with anatomically incorrect, but very Aardman-esque, over-bitey teeth.
But good things come to those who wait, and the studio’s sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, is a worthy successor. Rounding up the feathered friends who made a break for freedom in the last film, led...

Nearly a quarter-century has passed since Aardman hatched its first feature, and the generation that flipped for “Chicken Run” — tickled by the novelty of watching a pseudo-serious genre movie rendered silly by an ensemble of stop-motion poultry — has grown up to be parents. Distributed by DreamWorks, the 2000 toon reimagined “The Great Escape” with chickens, as a doomed flock schemed to fly the coop of a WWII-style concentration camp run by the intimidating Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson).
In the tasty (if young-skewing) sequel commissioned by Netflix, “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget,” it’s the other way around … or, as gung-ho Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) puts it in her trailer-ready motivational speech, “Last time, we broke out of a chicken farm. Well, this time, we’re breaking in!” Where the tongue-in-beak original was a sendup of war movies, “Nugget” serves as a riff on “Mission: Impossible”-style action flicks, putting Ginger in...

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the sequel to Aardman Animation’s 2000 stop-motion hit, is arriving 23 years after the original. Mused director Sam Fell during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders London, “At the end of the first one, you’re kind of a bit sick of chickens. It takes about three or four years to make these things so I think everyone wanted to do new things.”
At the time, he also remarked, “Animated sequels weren’t a big thing back then, Toy Story 2 was probably the first great animated sequel.”
A follow-up had been “in the background” and there were “brainstorming sessions,” but the original Chicken Run “is so brilliant, you can’t do something less than that,” Fell said.
Fast-forward to 2016 and Fell ran into the previous film’s co-director Peter Lord who told him, “We’ve got it, we figured it out.” The trick was a single line: “This time,...
