Kevin Grevioux, who created the “Underworld” franchise, and wrote and directed “King of Killers,” will direct action-adventure film “Shurika.”
The film will go into production later this year and rights are being pre-sold by Reiko Bradley’s Eclipse Intl. at the European Film Market, which accompanies the Berlin Film Festival.
The film is adapted by Grevioux from a graphic novel published by his Darkstorm Comics & Media company, about a biracial Black Japanese woman. She had been hidden from her Yakuza grandfather by her mother after he had her African American husband killed because of their taboo relationship. Years later, while trying to find her birth mother, the woman finds herself caught in a conflict between the ninja clan who raised her and the Japanese underworld.

Universal Pictures Benelux, a division of Universal Pictures International Entertainment has appointed Jasper Van Hecke as Benelux Acquisitions Manager, effective immediately. Van Hecke will be responsible for acquisitions across all genres in the Benelux. Based in the Netherlands, Van Hecke will report directly to Jerry Bellamy, acquisitions director France/Benelux.

SYDNEY -- Iain Canning, former head of acquisitions for recently shuttered U.K. sales company Renaissance Films, has been tapped to spearhead international acquisitions out of London for Australian sales agent Becker Films International and distribution company Dendy Films, both subsidiaries of the Becker Entertainment Group, the company announced Friday. Becker Films International has acquired five titles in the past 12 months, including Rag Tale, a contemporary urban satire set in the world of the British tabloids, and the Australian title Like Minds, which stars Toni Collette and Richard Roxburgh. BFI president Reiko Bradley said Friday that she hopes to increase the company's lineup to 10 pictures over the next 12 months, encompassing commercial films, genre fare and arthouse titles.
