Jared Abrahamson, probably best known as Tim Warren from that Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days thing is all of the sudden set to star in an upcoming indie movie titled Blowtorch. And, what’s definitely interesting about the whole thing – we’re talking about Brooklyn-based gangster tale! Imagine that! The rest of the cast looks almost perfect, though: Lois Robbins, Fat Joe and Kathy Najimy are already on board!
So, at this moment we know that Kevin Breslin will direct this gangster story which he, by the way, also co-wrote with Rosemary Breslin.
Blowtorch will center on Robbins’ character – a recently widowed mother whose oldest son is murdered. The detective assigned to the case doesn’t pay it much attention, prompting her to stalk a group of Brooklyn gangsters to uncover the truth.
Not hard to guess that Abrahamson will play the young man who gets caught in a life of crime,...

A film about the media coverage of the Occupy Wall Street movement by an Australian producer has had its world premiere online this morning.
The film #whilewewatch by Australian producer Mike Vanderfield was broadcast on SnagFilms from the Paley Center for Media in New York City this morning Australian time, last night New York time.
Produced by Vanderfield’s production company 8com’s documentary arm 8 Docos, and directed by Kevin Breslin, #whilewewatch documents how the protesters of the Occupy Wall Street movement used social media to spread their message in the face of lagging mainstream media to explain what was happening at the centre of Zuccotti Park, the protest’s ground zero.
Vanderfield said: “We hope #whilewewatch becomes an educational tool as well as documenting a piece of American history.”

Occupy Wall Street was as much a media revolution as it was a social movement. Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Kevin Breslin (Living for 32) participates in and contributes to that revolution tonight, with the live-streaming of his film. #whilewewatch documents the independent media phenomenon born in Zucotti Park, otherwise known as Occupy Wall Street. You can experience #whilewewatch on SnagFilms tonight at 8Pm Est, with a Q&A immediately afterwards. Both will air again at 8Pm Pst (11Pm Est). Breslin was good enough to talk with Paste about the movement, the media, and the birth of citizen journalism....

As its hashtag title suggests, Kevin Breslin's "#whilewewatch" is a movie about social media, but the focus is more specific: Breslin's documentary, which premieres on SnagFilms tonight accompanied by a live online Q&A with the director, chronicles the rise of the Occupy Wall Street movement through the grassroots media efforts of its participants (watch the trailer at the end of this interview). Breslin's camera was there from the early moments of the movement when protestors first arrived in Zucotti Park, but he also turned to the activists' canny use of various social networks and crowd antics to tell their story. Breslin spoke to Indiewire about his interest in Ows and why he didn't want to make a political film. When did you first get interested in the Occupy movement? I'm not a member of Ows in any way, shape or form, except that I admire the idea of...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will kick off Part Two of its 30th annual “Contemporary Documentaries” screening series with the 2010 Oscar®-nominated feature “Exit through the Gift Shop” and “Catfish” on Wednesday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Admission to all screenings in the series is free.
“Exit through the Gift Shop” follows a videographer named Thierry Guetta, who attempts to document the work of some of the world’s best-known guerrilla street artists. When the artist known only as Banksy questions Guetta’s intentions, however, and seizes control of the film, the roles of filmmaker and subject are reversed. Directed by Banksy and produced by Jaimie D’Cruz, “Exit through the Gift Shop” earned an Academy Award® nomination for Documentary Feature.
In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost began to film the life of Ariel’s brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project,...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Strange Case Of Angelica (O Estranho Caso de Angélica) Trailer There's really nothing bad you could say about the opening of this trailer. It...

Usually the matinee idol gets the part and then through the director’s magic miraculously survives to go on and have an impact on the story line. In the recently completed, Breslin/Cuomo-Cole, documentary, Live for 32, which follows the events of the 2003 Virginia Tech shooting, survivor Colin Goddard juxtaposes that Hollywood formula. Goddard, who could as easily, been cast as a male suitor in Gossip Girl, brings to this documentary a tough- as-nails survivor’s story. So much so that Goddard postponed surgery to remove pain inducing shrapnel until filming was concluded. The film’s director, Kevin Breslin was equally impressed. “Colin is a throw-back to an era when Americans refused to be victims. This is not the defining moment of this young man’s life but just a short chapter in what will certainly be an epic journey.” The propelling force behind this documentary is Maria Cuomo-Cole, a tireless advocate for social change.
