The global television scene offered up an embarrassment of riches this year, with a seemingly endless supply of phenomenal dramas, comedies and crime procedurals as good as, or often better, than the best on offer Stateside.
The international expansion of Netflix, Amazon, AppleTV+ and others has meant many global talents now have the financial means to make their dream originals, while series from more traditional local broadcasters have access to global platforms, and a worldwide audience, on a scale never seen before.
Ahead of the winter break, The Hollywood Reporter continues its holiday tradition in picking out the best international series to binge-watch over the holiday season. Our favorite 2022 series stocking stuffers include a feminist spy thriller from Germany, a Korean take on a British romantic classic and a deep dive into the French hip-hop scene of the 1980s. At the end of its first season, “Beforeigners” had a choice to make: treat the time-traveling premise of the show as a single massive difference between the world of the show and ours or use the possibility of hopping centuries as a starting point to go even bigger. Heavily inferring that the one of the series’ main characters once went backwards a millennium or so as a child was the first big sign that the HBO Max series was always going to go with the second option for Season 2.
From the outset of the series, “Beforeigners” proved it was willing to be expedient in the name of showing the most interesting parts of the world it made for itself. We see a “trans-temporal” group of people mysteriously appearing in an Oslo-area harbor. Within minutes, the show skips to a near future where an entire infrastructure is in place to help...

Where to Watch ‘Beforeigners’: HBO Max
TV is littered with “what if” stories — worlds that take our own and add one huge change. Often, that means organizing a show around one massive mystery or event and following the people left to parse the aftermath.
The main thing that separates “Beforeigners” from other shows like it is the massive time jump it takes in its very first episode. After introducing its inherently hook-y premise — groups of people from centuries, and even millennia, past pop up in the water outside present-day Oslo — the show immediately chooses to spend its time in a world where that new reality isn’t as unfamiliar. Tensions still run high in certain corners, but the intervening years have brought new institutional changes for daily life in the Norwegian capital. Runes appear on public signage, new terms (both preferred and derogatory) emerge to describe the newcomers,...

"I think I'm getting punished for not... for not leading a good enough life." 1091 Pictures has unveiled an official US trailer for a Norwegian drama titled Disco, which originally premiered at the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals last year. The film stars Josefine Frida Pettersen as a 19-year-old young woman who is a champion in disco freestyle dance and the stepdaughter of a charismatic evangelical pastor. When she begins to falter, her family questions her faith and prompts her to search for more radical solutions, and she ends up lured by a highly conservative Christian sect - which might actually be a death cult. The full cast includes Andreas Preus Efskin, Espen Reboli Bjerke, and Nicolai Cleve Broch. This almost looks like Norway's version of Midsommar, though about a dancer instead of an American woman. Creepy stuff. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Jorunn Myklebust Syversen's Disco,...

Haugesund, Norway — HBO Europe’s first Norwegian original series, which debuted Aug. 21 exclusively across HBO’s territories, has garnered rave reviews in the Norwegian press. It is also a perfect fit for HBO’s brand and goal to create bold, smart and author-driven shows.
Produced by Endemol Shine’s Norwegian prodco Rubicon TV, “Beforeigners” is helmed by Jens Lien. The backdrop for the six-part series is a not so far future. A new phenomenon starts happening all over the world. As flashes of light occur in the ocean, people from the past -the stoneage, the Viking age, and the late 1800s- called Beforeigners, mysteriously start to appear. A few years later, Alfhildr (“Blade Runner 2049”’s Krista Kosonen) who comes from the Viking Age has joined the local police force’s integration program, and becomes the side-kick to Lars Haaland and were looking for fresh ideas. HBO has released the first international trailer for its quirky Norwegian sci-fi drama Beforeigners. The series, which comes out of HBO Europe and stars Blade Runner 2049’s Krista Kosonen and Aquitted’s Nicolai Cleve Broch, is to launch on August 21.
The drama, which will be available in the U.S. via the WarnerMedia-owned network’s digital platforms, was created by Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin, the creative team behind Netflix’s Lilyhammer.
It follows a new phenomenon that starts happening all over the world. Powerful flashes of light occur in the ocean, and people from the past appear. They come from three separate time periods: The Stone Age, The Viking era and late 19th Century. No one understands how this is possible, and the people from the past, called ”beforeigners”, have no memory of what’s transpired. Only one thing is certain: they keep coming and there is no way back.

It’s a film starring Sundance Film Fest creator Robert Redford and another film starring Sundance mainstay James Franco that are the latest and last items to officially pad the 2015 edition. Ken Kwapis’ A Walk in the Woods (surely to be discussed as a companion piece to Gus Van Sant’s heavy Cannes contender The Sea of Trees) and Rupert Goold’s directorial debut, True Story – a story that is stranger than fiction close out the Premieres selections. Also announced we find items for New Frontier, Sundance Kids and the From the Collection items. And while the line-up is complete, the actual final piece to the puzzle might actually be a secret screening or two. This year I wager on Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups playing as a non official showing. Here’s the press release.

In 1904, Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig and Swedish archaeologist Gabriel Gustafson excavated one of the greatest discoveries of the Viking Age -- a burial mound located on the Oseberg farm near Tornberg, Norway, containing a well-preserved ship, grave goods and the skeletal remains of two women. The quality and abundance of items within the grave indicate that at least one of the interred was a woman of high status, and it has been suggested that she was the legendary Norwegian Queen Asa.
Norwegian director Mikkel Brænne Sandemose couples this archaeological find with the Norse myth of the end of the world's events in his action/adventure Ragnarok, which premiered at Fantastic Fest. This family-friendly film pays homage to blockbusters such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Goonies without the overdone Hollywood gloss. Don't get me wrong -- the movie includes plenty of long shots of sweeping landscapes with a majestic musical score to match,...

Allow me to begin by admitting something. I've never heard of Max Manus, and I very rarely watch foreign language films, in fact the last one was 2004’s "Nightwatch" I believe. With that in mind, watching and ultimately reviewing Max Manus: Man Of War was never going to be straightforward.
Starring Aksel Hennie (Max Manus), Nicolai Cleve Broch, Ken Duken, Christian Rubeck and Agnes Kittelsen the film is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg and is the most successful Norwegian film in 20 years. But will that success translate here in the UK?
For those of you who are unfamiliar with this story, much as I was, allow me to provide a brief synopsis to the film:
Max Manus is the true story of the resistance fighter of the same name, who in spite of being one of the most wanted men by the Gestapo in Norway, participated in...

Yes, we’ve been looking forward to this one rather a lot, thanks in no small part to the acting one-two punch of Nicolai Cleve Broche and Kristoffer Joner - two of the very best the region has to offer - in the leads. Set in the end of the hippie era and based on a cult novel The Last Joint Venture casts Broche and Joner as a pair of stoner pot dealers swept up in the wave of harder drugs that burst on to the scene in the seventies. Here’s the synopsis:
“Paranoid is when you think someone’s following you, but if you know it, that’s different, right?” says Carl in The Last Joint Venture. The final strains of the hippie decade are fading, and the 80s are looming ahead. Carl (Kristoffer Joner) and Robert (Nicolai Cleve Broch) are two wasters who live in harmony with the world,...
