Recently Jon Brooks at Kqed wrote up a very nice piece on Tom Noonan’s What Happened Was (1994). That film won multiple awards at Sundance but barely go seen. Unfortunately it does not sleep alone in my bed of barely seen almost-masterpieces. As strong as my track record may be, it still holds some flops, misfires, and damn bad luck experiences. It’s great that Tom’s flick may get some of the love it so richly deserves, albeit twenty years after it’s debut.

Luis Suarez memes have taken over Twitter after the Uruguayan soccer player appeared to bite the shoulder of Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in their 2014 World Cup face-off Tuesday afternoon.
Luis Suarez Biting Memes Go Viral
Suarez has been nicknamed the Hannibal Lecter of international soccer, having bitten at least two other opponents prior to Chiellini. Last year, while playing for his current club team – the English Premiere League’s Liverpool Fc – Suarez bit the arm of Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic. FIFA subsequently banned him for 10 games. In 2010, Suarez received a seven-match ban for biting Otman Bakkal in the Dutch Eredivisie.
In addition to drawing comparison’s to Hannibal, Suarez has now inspired memes that make him into a vampire, a zombie, Jaws and more.

Uruguayan soccer star Luis Suarez appeared to bite the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini in his squad’s match against the Italian national team in their World Cup game Tuesday afternoon.
Luis Suarez Bites Giorgio Chiellini
In the 79th minute of play, with the game tied 0-0, Uruguay was given a set piece after a foul by Italy. Chiellini was tasked with marking Suarez in the penalty box. Before the ball was served, Suarez appeared to bite into the back of Chiellini’s shoulder.
Immediately after digging his teeth into his opponent, who fell to the ground, Suarez reached up to his mouth, acting as though Chiellini had delivered an elbow to his nose and jaw. An outraged Chiellini got up and pulled the collar of his shirt to show the ref the teeth marks, but Uruguay’s Gaston Ramirez ran over to pull the defender’s shirt over the wound.

When it comes to game-winning strategies, 21-year-old defender John Brooks knows how to get his head in the game. His tie-breaking header during Team USA's opening match of the World Cup against longtime rivals Ghana nearly doubled the U.S.'s chances of advancing out of their group - and instantly made the 6'4" substitute-turned-superstar one of the most famous members of the United States Men's National Team. For Brooks, the goal was a literal dream come true. Related: Joe Biden Congratulates the U.S. Soccer Team After World Cup Win"I told some teammates that I dreamed that I...

Landon Donovan’s name getting left off the Us national soccer team’s roster for the 2014 World Cup shocked the soccer world, including Donovan himself – though that hasn’t stopped him from joking about it.

In the EA Sports commercial for the 2014 FIFA World Cup game, Donovan, clad in USA slippers and a similarly patriotic robe, goes about his morning. The onetime standout, instead of snatching up his bag with his soccer gear and heading to Brazil, sits down on the couch.
If he can’t play on the pitch in Brazil to compete for the World Cup trophy, Donovan can strive for the trophy in virtual reality, where he’s on the roster. Watching his likeness clutch the World Cup trophy on the screen in the game, Donovan delivers an eye roll for the ages.

The United States national soccer team beat Ghana in their first game in the group round of the 2014 World Cup Monday night.
USA Beats Ghana At World Cup
U.S. came out onto the field in Brazil Monday determined not to let Ghana, who has knocked them out of the last two World Cups, get another win off of them. With less than a minute into the game, star forward Clint Dempsey dribbled through the left side of the penalty box and slid the ball inside the far post of the net for his squad’s first goal of the tournament.
With the one goal lead, the U.S. was able to settle into a possession game as Ghana fought to regain momentum. Eventually, the Ghanaians had their first legitimate chance to score, but were denied by American keeper Tim Howard, who sprinted off his line to make the save.

Director Jon Keeyes has released a really unique steampunk trailer for his upcoming short film/TV pilot "The Mechanical Grave." Sure, all the traditional horror sub-genres are great and much loved. But when something totally unique like this trailer appears, we've got to be sure to send it your way also.
This is a well shot piece of work with some nice F/X and some cool physical work done by the actors. The short was written by Charles Burnley and produced by Matthew Tompkins and Jon Keeyes. The plan for the project is for it to be worked from a pilot into a six-episode series, then, with any luck, a regular television series. The first 30 seconds look very impressive so they've got that going for them. But there's no sense in me blathering on about it. Check out The Mechanical Grave trailer below.

Whether they were dealing with drownings, poisonings or child abduction, British public information films never held back. Jude Rogers finds out why they're still haunting the imaginations of today's directors
One afternoon in 1973, Terry Sue-Patt got on a bus with some friends from a community theatre and travelled to a river on the outskirts of London. Here, the 10-year-old would unwittingly star in one of the scariest public information films of all time. "We all thought it was a lovely day out," he remembers. "We were just told to jump up and down near the water, play with sticks, mess about. When I saw the finished film, and saw a man in a black cape standing behind us, I had quite a different reaction."
