"Maddog strikes again!!" This awesome new short film from New Zealand is absolutely worth a watch. The Ballad of Maddog Quinn is a gritty sci-fi western action short film made by Kiwi filmmaker Matt Inns, who writes & directs & produces. Set in a post-apocalyptic steampunk world which resembles the old wild west, the film is about the infamous Maddog Quinn – an outlaw with an unlikely cause, as he runs from the relentless state regulators. Another tale of a lone wolf making his way around desolate lands. Described by Nz media as the "next Peter Jackson", his other short film Oku Tuakana, My Brothers played at Cannes in 2010. After playing at festivals all year, The Ballad of Maddog Quinn is now online to watch thanks to Short of the Week. Starring Maggie Pirie, Jed Brophy, John Bach, and Ben Stewart. This has an impressive amount of kick ass action scenes in it for only 15 minutes,...

Every bit as outrageously entertaining as horror fans would expect from Housebound director Gerard Johnstone, Malignant writer Akela Cooper, and producers James Wan and Jason Blum, M3GAN danced into theaters the first week of January.
With a persuasive marketing campaign led by a buzzy trailer and a strong social media presence, the film performed beyond expectations, grossing $173.4 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. A sequel, M3GAN 2.0, was swiftly put into development for a January 2025 release.
Until then, viewers can now enjoy both the theatrical and unrated cuts of M3GAN on Blu-ray. The release also carries three making-of featurettes: “New Vision of Horror,” “Bringing Life to M3GAN,” and “Getting Hacked.” Despite running a scant 14 minutes in total, they pack in soundbites from a wide array of cast and crew members.

Bringing the titular killer doll from "M3GAN" to life was a labor of love that combined puppeteering, animatronics, and a human actor in a doll mask, but it's that human performance that really takes the creation from mildly creepy to terrifying. (Read our review!) Actor Amie Donald, who was 11 years old at the time of filming, portrays the high-tech toy with a perfect mix of inhuman grace and jerky, robotic movements, and it turns out that much of M3GAN's physicality came directly from Donald, who did her own stunts and helped co-choreograph the dance sequence that has since gone viral on TikTok.
In interviews with the Los Angeles Times detailing the work that went into creating M3GAN, director Gerard Johnstone revealed that some of the most horrifying moments from the trailer were all Donald, who used her training as a gymnast to bring a unique physicality to her inhuman character.

You may have heard that there's a war currently brewing between two polar opposite fantasy juggernauts. Though (mercifully) airing new episodes on two different days of the week, "House of the Dragon" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" have been duking out for the last few weeks over the ongoing pop culture conversation. As much as some may draw interesting parallels between the two, many others can't help but focus on how one series is approaching its material far differently than the other. Genre fans enjoying both shows in equal measure get the last laugh here, but there's at least one other party serving as a bridge between both properties.
In addition to acting as prequels to much more well-known media, both share yet another indirect connection in the form of actor Joseph Mawle.

When it comes to the most entertaining Easter eggs and tidbits sprinkled throughout "The Lord of the Rings," there are a handful of time-honored traditions that fans have passed down and made sure to turn into endearing memes. Did you know that Viggo Mortensen broke his toe after kicking a helmet? How about the fact that Sir Christopher Lee was the only cast member to actually know J.R.R. Tolkien? Oh, and then there are all the various cameos by director Peter Jackson throughout the trilogy.
But even the most knowledgeable viewers may have missed a specific fun fact that has linked every single live-action Tolkien adaptation together. Of all the talent that have participated in various Middle-earth stories over the last two decades, only a sole individual has left their fingerprints on each and every one on-camera. No, it's not mo-cap actor extraordinaire Andy Serkis or even director Peter Jackson,...

The Lord of the Rings was, is and always will be viewed as a monumental achievement in cinema, one that will never likely even be replicated never mind bettered.
New Line Cinema took a massive gamble in giving the green light to three blockbuster movies shot simultaneously at a combined cost of over $280 million, especially when the books had long been deemed unfilmable and the fantasy genre itself had been struggling for decades. Almost $3 billion at the box office and seventeen Academy Awards later, though, including Best Picture and Best Director for closing chapter The Return of the King, the Middle-earth adaptations had blown any doubts so far out of the water that they’d hit the stratosphere as the trilogy cemented a place in history, and it’s now lauded as the apex of big budget filmmaking.
Unfortunately, however, lightning didn’t strike twice when it came to The Hobbit.

The horror genre has produced all sorts of killers. And I don’t mean the Freddy’s and Jason’s of this world. What I am talking about is the rubber tyres, the snowmen, the drone, the beds and the several other strange objects and beings that kill people. Killer Sofa is the latest of this type of movie and I couldn’t wait to watch it.
First off, Killer Sofa really does live up to the hype I had given it myself. There are plenty of movies that know exactly what they are. They know they are silly, they know their audience and they know that aren’t making a movie that most people would consider a classic.

My Lover, My Lazy Boy is an upcoming horror comedy. From the twisted mind of director Bernie Rao (The Badlands), this film envisions a serial-killing armchair. A movie clip was released for the film a year ago. Currently, director Rao is completing production on the film, which is slated to show in film markets later this year. This is a New Zealand production. And, My Lover, My Lazy Boy stars: Jed Brophy (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), Harley Neville (I Survived a Zombie Holocaust), Grant Kereama, Piimio Mei and many others. An unofficial trailer, for the film, is available here - along with a few other details. The official plot mentions a Dybbuk-possessed reclining chair. This chair becomes infatuated with its new owner (no seriously?!). Now, this recliner will do whatever it takes, including murder, to have her. Not even a Jewish Rabbi, nor a Voodoo sorceress can help.

Given how easy it is to dramatize ghost encounters, the paranormal subgenre has become horror’s deepest mixed-bag of results. A good zombie movie requires flesh-rotting makeup, and slasher flicks demand artistically grotesque gore, but any average Joe or Jane can string together a few spiritual scares.
Slam some doors, shut some windows, make objects fly around a room – you know, that Paranormal Activity knock-off garbage – and finito! Just look at Jason Stutter’s The Dead Room. Costs are low because one rickety shack acts as the film’s single setting, and only three actors have to pretend something nasty is chasing them. Paranormal Activity made a cool profit doing the same, so why not The Dead Room?
Well, because it’s weightless, derivative, recycled genre boredom that makes even 75 minutes feel like a horror fan’s personal Hell.

Fans of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit films have been anxiously awaiting the release of the inevitable extended version of The Battle of Five Armies, and today Warner Bros. have officially revealed when fans can pick it up, along with which new special features are included. Come inside to take a look!
I think I've made it clear over the last few years, that I haven't exactly been a fan of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy (for a variety of reasons). However, I have felt that the extended edition versions of the movies have been more enjoyable for me as I watched them. Perhaps that will be the case with Battle of the Five Armies, which hits blu-ray on November 17th, with 20 extra minutes of footage.
And yes, as rumored/revealed a little while ago, this new version is in fact rated R. Take from that what you will,...

As has been the case with all of Peter Jackson's films (especially where Middle-Earth is concerned), the previous The Hobbit film, The Desolation of Smaug is getting an extended edition. Warner Bros. have now announced the details on the upcoming blu-ray, which includes 25 minutes of extra footage, and you'll be able to get it in your hands just in time for the final film in the trilogy. Come inside to check out all the details!
I loved the Extended Edition versions of all the Lord of the Rings films. They were great and added in some content that genuinely fleshed out characters and storylines...Yet, I've had very little interest in seeing more of The Hobbit films. For the most part, this is due to the fact that I feel The Hobbit films have been bloated from the get-go. There are plenty of scenes in both of these movies...

Whatever your thoughts are on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy when compared to the director’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, you certainly can’t fault him for casting. This new trilogy, which concludes in December with The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, has brought back Ian McKellen as the great wizard Gandalf and Orlando Bloom as archer Legolas, while starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, Benedict Cumberbatch as the dragon Smaug and Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman, among many, many others. Now, we’ve got a new image from the trilogy topper, highlighting McKellen and Evans as they gaze, awe-struck, off-screen at what I can only presume is The Hobbit‘s collective worldwide box office haul.
Granted, the shot isn’t the most revealing, but it’s a nice reminder that this movie is on its way. So much attention...

Though Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy hasn’t received nearly as positive reviews as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the first two installments were solid, if overlong, high fantasy adventures, thanks both to Jackson’s sense of visual splendor and the talents of the ensemble cast. An Unexpected Journey was more dull than many expected, though I personally enjoyed it, and The Desolation of Smaug was a big step up from that, accelerating the pace and featuring some truly epic battles. So, will the trilogy-topper, this winter’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, keep that upward momentum going to become the best of the bunch? It’s too early to say, of course, but the first official synopsis for the fantasy film certainly seems promising.

Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema jointly announced on Friday that the much-anticipated final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, has now been titled The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.
The film, previously titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” will be released worldwide December 17, 2014, with select international territories releasing on December 10, 2014.
Peter Jackson stated, “Our journey to make ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two-film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. ‘A noble quest, to reclaim a homeland, and slay a dragon’ – this plot synopsis, helpfully uttered by elven king Thranduil in the second instalment in the Hobbit trilogy, suggests there’s a straightforward A-to-b quality to this fantasy sequel.
Peter Jackson’s film is certainly a marked improvement on its predecessor. Rather than relying on a lengthy prefix and interminable exposition and singing in The Shire, The Desolation of Smaug gets going straight away. Purists will still have quibbles about changes or additions to the text but few could deny how thrilling the film is, whether it’s seeing Beorn evocatively realised, shuddering through a genuinely creepy sequence involving the spiders of Mirkwood, or bouncing along in a seemingly Donkey Kong-inspired Barrels Out Of Bond scene.
The action is splendidly developed, the design (as with all of Jackson’s Middle Earth epics) sumptuous and the principal cast excel themselves, with...
