It sometimes feels like "Cast Away" doesn't get as much love as it deserves. It's certainly well-regarded by both critics and audiences, but it almost seems a bit forgotten. Yes, it still airs on cable pretty regularly, but it's not a film that comes up in day-to-day cinema conversation often. After all, when people talk about the best Tom Hanks movies and performances, they tend to go right to films like "Philadelphia," "Saving Private Ryan," and "Forrest Gump," when the best performance of his career may very well have been as Chuck Noland in "Cast Away." Considering the fact he spends most of the movie completely isolated, and his primary scene partner is a volleyball, the movie is a testament to his star power and acting talent.
And as great as Hanks was in the film, and as satisfying (and wildly successful) a film as "Cast Away" wound up being,...

John Sacret Young, the author and producer best known for his work on “China Beach” and “The West Wing,” died on June 3 after a 10-month battle with brain cancer. He was 75.
Young co-created “China Beach” with William Broyles Jr., serving as executive producer and showrunner on the much-lauded show about American combat nurses during the Vietnam War. Young received five Emmy and four Writers Guild Award nominations for his work on the ABC drama series, which ran from 1988-91, with star Dana Delany receiving two Emmy trophies and co-star Marg Helgenberger winning one. Young served as a mentor to many young crew members and took pride in elevating women’s careers behind the camera despite the overt and implicit sexism of the time.

Reinert began his career as a crime reporter for the Chronicle, then moved into covering NASA in the 1970s where he discovered his love and fascination for space. In this edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look back at Ron Howard‘s ‘Apollo 13’ in honor of ‘Solo‘ and ‘Arrested Development‘ season 5.
Apollo 13 (1995)
Director: Ron Howard
Screenplay: William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert based on the book “Lost Moon,” by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger
For some reason, certain films are almost too familiar for me to talk about well. Even great films. ‘Apollo 13‘, in America anyway, is one of those films for a lot of people, me included. A few films are like this, that they ingrain so much of the best of Americana that they almost exist outside of their greatness as a film. In fact, when they are so ingrained, the greatness of a film, sometimes gets overshadowed. It’s almost impossible to see the amazing technical achievements now, partially because they’re hidden in plain sight so brilliantly, recreating images and of 1970 space technology,...

Initially, the miniseries was set to star “True Blood” alum Joe Manganiello, but the actor had to remove himself from the series due to health issues. He was then replaced by “Justified” star Walton Goggins. “It was a different style of acting, so we had to adjust, but we were able to take the series in a different direction,” William Broyles said at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday. It isn’t news when Lesli Linka Glatter earns another Emmy nomination for directing “Homeland” (Showtime) — this time, she’s gotten two, as well as sharing Best Drama with showrunners Alex Ganza and Howard Gordon and the other executive producers.
From the start, Glatter has deployed the rigorous discipline she learned from being a modern dance choreographer to meticulously preparing everything she does, from storyboards to character analysis.

The History Channel is looking to embark on a mission with The Weinstein Company. They’ve teamed up for a new military series called Six, which will center on Seal Team Six, the team that brought down the Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Operation Neptune Spear.
This will be an eight-episode military action drama that will tell the real life stories of the team and their missions, “capturing SEALs’ complex personal lives, and the life and death decisions they make, with each season set in a different location, starting with Africa.” The series is being written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter and Vietnam veteran William Broyles (Castaway, Jarhead) and his son David Broyles, a military special operations veteran. They were obviously brought in because they have first hand experience.
Why are they starting with Africa? Harvey Weinstein said:
“The idea originally came to me when I read about Boko Haram kidnapping school children in Africa.

History is continuing a push into scripted drama following their success with "Vikings" along with event series like "Hatfields & McCoys" and "Sons of Liberty". Now, two more ongoing series have joined the line-up with the network greenlighting two new originals - the Crusade-era "Knightfall" and the military drama "Six".
"Knightfall" will chronicle the mysterious yet truthful accounts of the elite Crusade-era warriors known as the Knights Templar - a group that inspired much fiction from the Arthurian legends to modern day franchises in various formats like "Star Wars" and "Assassin's Creed".
A ten-episode first season of "Knightfall" has been ordered with Jeremy Renner's production company The Combine to produce and "The Avengers" star expected to guest star.

Joe Wright is understood to be in talks to direct The Lifeboat starring Anne Hathaway.
The actress has been linked to the project as a producer since 2013, but it appears it may be a step closer to starting procution with a director lined up according to Empire.
The Lifeboat is an adaption of Charlotte Rogan's historical novel, which Cast Away writer William Broyles Jr. is working on.
It follows the troubles of Grace Winter, a woman standing trial for murder in 1914 who has survived the sinking of a transatlantic liner (wonder where that idea came from?).
Grace and her husband find themselves in a boat which is too full (they always are) and the survivors start scheming on removing some of them.
Grace's trial then sees her giving her testimony on what followed - but it's not clear if Grace was a part of the mini-mutiny or if she has been blamed for it.

Anne Hathaway has been busy putting together a new starring role. She’s been a producer on the adaptation of a book called The Lifeboat since at least 2013, but is in the process of locking down a director, with Anna Karenina’s Joe Wright now in talks. William Broyles Jr., who knows a little bit about people stuck in difficult situations after writing Cast Away, is at work on the script. Charlotte Rogan’s historical novel focuses on Grace Winter, a young woman standing trial for murder in 1914. As part of her testimony, Grace recalls how she and her new husband survived the sinking of a transatlantic ship called the Empress and ended up stranded in a lifeboat. Trouble is, there were too many people aboard, and the survivors starting to think about getting rid of one or two of them. Was Grace part of a plot? Or an innocent victim of a whispering campaign?...

Brit director Joe Wright is stepping back into period garb to direct "The Lifeboat," reports Deadline. In this film version of Charlotte Rogan's celebrated debut novel, Anne Hathaway is attached to star as Grace Winter, a young widow on trial for murder and who survives her husband on a sinking ocean liner and ends up marooned on a lifeboat in 1914. The number of people on board leads to a moral question of who stays, and who goes. Focus Features and Working Title acquired rights to the film, which Hathaway is also in talks to produce. "Castaway" scribe William Broyles Jr., fittingly, is writing this script and executive-producing. Working Title's Tim Beva and Eric Fellner — who backed Wright's 2007 Best Picture nominee "Atonement" — and Liza Chasin are producing alongside Film 360. 'Cast Away' Movie with Tom Hanks stranded on a deserted island 'Cast Away' Movie review: Tom Hanks excellent in high-concept Hollywood flick disguised as existential adventure drama Most people will see Robert Zemeckis' Cast Away as a celebration of the Triumph of the Human Spirit. A minority, myself included, will prefer the more mundane explanation that the film merely depicts a man following his survival instincts, which propel him – like any other animal, from cockroaches to crocodiles – to fight to remain alive almost against his will. Whichever way one chooses to view the survival of Tom Hanks' Federal Express engineer Chuck Noland (No-land, get it?) after being stranded for years on a deserted island (mostly shot in Monuriki, Fiji), Cast Away is little more than an elaborate, populist star vehicle disguised as an existential The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe-esque drama. April 27, 1988 – July 22, 199, ABC
I never understood why more often than not, on lists of the greatest TV shows, greatest characters, or greatest anything TV connected, poor China Beach seems to get no love. How can a critically acclaimed show about an historic event so unforgettable be so often forgotten? With the cast recently reuniting for the first time in 25 years, there’s no better time to look back at one of my favorite series of all time. Hopefully, I’ll get the recently released box set for Christmas (and be able to finally get rid of that bootleg first season I’ve had for years).
I wasn’t a fan at first. When it originally aired, I was about 14 and initially thought ‘Who wants to watch a show about a war?’ A long, plodding hour-long drama on late night...
