Casting for The Hobbit seems like it’s just about done, with all the major roles having been filled by actors at this point. We’ve now heard of one more addition and another confirmation, and the parts that both of them have been given leads me to think that this aspect of the production is complete.
First, Deadline tells us that Luke Evans has joined the movies, in the role of Bard the Bowman. This might be the last major character who didn’t have an actor in its place, and this is also the first we’ve heard of him being here at all. The character of Bard is the heir of King Girion of Dale, and is an archer, playing a big part in the story of J.R.R. Tolkein‘s book. He’s described as being reminiscent of the Aragorn character from the original trilogy,...

Just when you thought the casting for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit was complete another name gets added to the mix. Today it's Deadline reporting Luke Evans, who plays Aramis in Paul W.S. Anderson's upcoming The Three Musketeers, will play Bard the Grim (aka Bard the Bowman), a skilled archer and the heir of King Girion of Dale.
The role of Bard will play a larger role in the second film in a way I won't spoil here for those that haven't read "The Hobbit" or read it so long ago they have forgotten.
As for Evans, he has actually been on several of the shortlists of late for some major roles such as the lead in The Bourne Legacy which went to Jeremy Renner and the role of Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, which went to Joel Edgerton.

The rightful heir to the throne of Dale and eventual slayer of the dragon Smaug, Bard the Bowman is one of the key roles in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Director Peter Jackson has been filming the two-part, 3D adaptation of the classic book for several weeks now but had yet to announce who would play this pivotal character. We've now learned that Luke Evans, best known for roles in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood and Clash of the Titans, has been cast as Bard. Evans is an up and coming actor whose roles in the upcoming The Three Musketeers and Immortals have primed him for a trip to Middle Earth. Deadline broke [1] the news of the casting and point out that Evans was due to land a major role like this. He was in the discussion to star in the new Bourne film, The Bourne Legacy as well as...

When Ben Affleck dropped out of Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby 3D to direct and star in his thriller Argo, the role of Tom Buchanan reopened. We know this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s classic novel will star Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Isla Fisher as Myrtle, and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker. THR now lets us know who may get the coveted major role that remains.
Sources say Joel Edgerton and Luke Evans have both read for the role. Edgerton, the Animal Kingdom star, has been recently attached to many high-profile films including The Bourne Legacy (ultimately going to Jeremy Renner) and Kathryn Bigelow‘s Bin Laden project. Evans, who was also in the Bourne running, has Immortals and The Three Musketeers coming out later this year and will star in Nicolas Winding Refn‘s neo-western Only God Forgives.
