NEW YORK -- Picture This Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to the coming-of-age comedic drama Whole New Thing. The gay-themed Canadian film will have a limited release in theaters in the fall. The sophomore feature from director/co-writer Amnon Buchbinder (The Fishing Trip) centers on a 13-year-old boy (Aaron Webber) who, after years of home teaching by hippie parents, is sent to a local school. The precocious youth soon develops a crush on his promiscuous gay English teacher (played by the film's co-writer, Daniel MacIvor), leading to various complications for them and the student's family.
TORONTO -- Lasse Hallstrom's "An Unfinished Life" will close the 25th Atlantic Film Festival on Sept. 24, organizers said Tuesday as they unveiled a 220-film lineup. The Robert Redford-Jennifer Lopez starrer about a divided family learning the meaning of forgiveness will bookend Canada's third-largest film festival, which kicks off Sept. 15 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The previously announced "3 Needles", an epic AIDS drama from Canadian director Thom Fitzgerald that stars Chloe Sevigny, Lucy Liu and Stockard Channing, will open the festival. Other galas include Canadian director Amnon Buchbinder's "Whole New Thing", the Rebecca Jenkins-Daniel MacIvor-starring drama set in the wilds of Nova Scotia; Louise Archambault's "Familia"; and Neil Jordan's "Breakfast on Pluto". The largest program in Halifax is the Atlantic program of local films, which this year includes 15 feature films and 50 shorts.
