Even on a day when much of America was hoping to see the sun go out, there’s still an ongoing need to hear someone sing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” That, among many other things, is what’s offered in tonight’s PBS broadcast of a tribute special for Elton John and Bernie Taupin, two of the worthiest talents ever to be awarded the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize. If you’re a fan — and who isn’t?, as they say — the two-hour show will provide a total eclipse of all your other most pressing entertainment needs.
Three words: “Joni Mitchell” and “Metallica.” If this salute never moved out of the M’s, it would be worthy enough just based on those two highlights alone, neither of whom probably seemed like the likeliest Elton interpreter. But there they are, on the very same bingo card.

Long before she traded in country music for unstoppable pop stardom, there was a moment in time when Taylor Swift decided to go full emo. And it really was just a moment, particularly the mid-point of NBC‘s Thanksgiving Special: Taylor Swift – Speak Now in 2010, just one month after she released her third studio album Speak Now. Her nine-song setlist could have soundtracked a fairytale: There were dreamy renditions of “Sparks Fly” and “Enchanted,” but when she reached “Haunted,” Swift let the teenage angst that inspired it consume her completely.

Here’s one that really benefits from its 4K upgrade — Terry Gilliam’s dense visuals look great with Roger Pratt’s exacting cinematography. Is this really a thinking man’s science fiction hit, or did audiences mainly want to get a look at Brad Pitt in a new mode, playing a weird motormouthed eccentric? Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe star in a time-puzzle thriller adaptation of Chris Marker’s La jetée.

Terry Gilliam’s second big-star ‘retrench’ movie benefits from his fertile imagination, and his handling of an overly complicated sci-fi script. Did happy audiences respond to the film’s second-hand time travel complexities, or did they just like seeing Brad Pitt in a new mode, playing a weird motormouthed eccentric?

Elton John was just a shy, gawky 22-year-old struggling pianist/songwriter when drummer Nigel Olsson first laid eyes on him. It was early 1969 and John was a staff songwriter for Dick James’ Djm Records, desperately trying to write songs for the likes of Lulu, Roger Cook and the Eurovision Song Contest along with his lyricist Bernie Taupin. “I would hang around the Dick James office,” recalls Olsson. “And if Elton was cutting a demo and needed a drummer he’d say to me, ‘Hey, would you come back into the...

Elton John is singing David Bowie's praises in the wake of the rocker's death at the age of 69 on Sunday. John, 68, opened up about Bowie while taping a SiriusXM Town Hall special at the Wiltern in Los Angeles on Tuesday. "Look, there's been so many incredible words written about him in the last couple of days," John shared during the show, which airs on Feb. 4. "I just said to [my husband] David [Furnish] that it's so wonderful. We all know how inspiring he is. We all know that his music stands. We don't have to say anything about the music because it speaks for itself.

The first thing I'd tell you about Syfy's "12 Monkeys" is that it isn't Terry Gilliam's "12 Monkeys." Fortunately, that's one of the first things that the people being the new Syfy time-travel drama would tell you as well. "I think it’s a complete sort of reimagining," co-creator Terry Matalas says at Monday's (July 14) Television Critics Association press tour panel for "12 Monkeys." "We were all very, very big fans of the original film and had a deep love and respect for that material. So when we came together with Richard and talked about this, we didn’t want to just re do what the movie does. We changed the rules in the movie. Can’t actually change time, and here you can. So everything from the top down changed, from Cole’s character to Dr. Railly’s character to some new characters, Ramse and Aaron. So the story, while it...

Mel Gibson in The Beaver
Photo: Summit Entertainment Depressing, occasionally disjointed and somewhat overly sentimental, Jodie Foster's The Beaver remains a solid film thanks to a fitting lead performance by Mel Gibson, considering the man's all too public, private life, which caused this film to sit on the shelf for nearly a year.
Originally designed as a comedy for Steve Carell, Foster came on board and found darker corners to explore, which isn't all that surprising considering the roles Foster has gravitated toward throughout most of her career. Here she tells the story of Walter Black (Gibson), a man so depressed he's ready to check out. His family life has fallen apart and his eldest son, Porter (Anton Yelchin), hates him to the extent he's taken the time to note all the negative similarities he shares with his now aimless father. What's Walter to do?

It makes sense that Who Killed Amanda Palmer, the solo debut by singer-pianist Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls, started small but snowballed into a yearlong multi-studio production with Ben Folds at the helm. Everything Palmer does is a production—particularly The Dresden Dolls' theatrical performances, where she and drummer Brian Viglione perform in whiteface and tear into their songs with dramatic abandon. For her solo album, Palmer planned to collect songs that didn't need drums, record them in her bedroom, and release them, to little fanfare. Traces of that plan remain on Palmer's quieter moments. "Ampersand" sounds like a fairly typical Dolls ballad in the vein of "Delilah" (from 2006's Yes Virginia), but the string arrangements by renowned composer Paul Buckmaster (The Rolling Stones, Carly Simon, Elton John) quickly distinguish it as something more ambitious. And...
