"Spawn" creator, toy manufacturer Todd MacFarlane, fielding studio offers to develop his supernatural comic book character into another feature, says a new movie will only happen if he receives total control to write, produce and direct:
"I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they'll let me direct it", said McFarlane.
"Just so everybody knows, I write, produce, direct, non-negotiable. I wouldn’t ask to be a newbie director on a script that was going to have an eighty million budget for it.
"Why? Because as a CEO of my own corporation, I wouldn’t take that deal. I wouldn’t stick out $80 million and go, ‘they’re going to put a rookie and he’s going to basically be in charge of it.’ So I’ve created this tight little one that I keep saying, I think I can shoot it for ten..."

It's no secret that Kevin Smith is a fan of comic books, and he's recently been enjoying his time at the CW directing episodes of The Flash and Supergirl. He also recently announced that he was going to make a new Jay and Silent Bob movie. Now he's got a new TV project in the works! We've learned that Smith is set to write, direct, and executive produce a series based on Todd McFarlane's Spawn.
The series will be a supernatural crime series based on the homicide detective characters from Spawn, Sam and Twitch. The series is being developed for BBC America. The announcement came from Gm Sarah Barnett, who had this to say in a statement:
"They were originally introduced in Spawn, and it's Todd McFarlane's comic book series about these big-city homicide detectives who face a series of super grizzly [sic] crimes that are connected to the occult.

As Spawn creator Todd McFarlane continues to tease that second feature film based on the supernatural antihero, we now have news on a spinoff TV series that’s actually a lot closer to becoming a reality. According to Deadline, Kevin Smith is set to develop a police procedural for BBC America based on the exploits of NYPD homicide detectives, Sam and Twitch.
Sam Burke and Maximilian “Twitch” Williams were first introduced as tertiary characters in the pages of Spawn, but their popularity led to their own comic series in 1999. Though they obviously interacted with Al Simmons and the various other fantastical creatures that inhabited his world, their spinoff was a lot more grounded, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of balance the TV adaptation strikes.
Here’s what BBC America president and general manager Sarah Barnett had to say about the news in a statement released earlier...

While the 1997 live action "Spawn" film was widely derided, the critics were much happier with the far darker and more adult HBO animated series based on Todd McFarlane's creation. Running for three seasons, and winning an Emmy for one, the series was famous for being a very faithful adaptation of the comic and containing very adult subject matter with violence, sex and buckets of blood.
McFarlane has often teased the revival of "Spawn" in one form or another over the years, and this week used his Facebook page to tease a new animated "Spawn" project in the works. McFarlane posted three pieces of concept art from the project, most notably the character designs for the NYPD homicide detectives, Sam Burke and Maximilian "Twitch" Williams. Here's a copy of his posting:
"For All of you that have been asking...here's a Sneak Peek at some New Spawn Animation that is in the works!

Just about an hour ago, Todd McFarlane posted a message on his facebook page. The message, which you can read below in its entirety, teases a new animated Spawn project. McFarlane also provided a sneak peek - three pieces of concept art. The first image is character designs for the NYPD homicide detectives, Sam Burke and Maximilian "Twitch" Williams. Their partnership is built on one of them being the brawn and the other being the brains. I'll let you guess which is which. They were so popular that in 1999 they received their own spinoff comic. The other two images McFarlane released are of the gritty locale that Spawn/Al Simmons will surely inhabit. For All of you that have been asking...here's a Sneak Peek at some New Spawn Animation that is in the works!!!!!! Don't tell anyone I showed you because you're the First to see it!!!!!! At every...
