Fox 2000 has optioned a Los Angeles Times article about a Los Angeles Police Department officer-turned-football coach who ended up adopting a street kid. George Tillman Jr. and Robert Teitel's State Street Pictures will produce the feature, and Sid Quashie has been tapped to write. Written by Times staff writer Sandi Banks and published in February, the article told of cop Derwin Henderson and his relationship with disadvantaged youth Terrance Flournoy. Henderson met Flournoy when the latter was 9 years old and breaking into Compton's Centennial High. Henderson was coaching a youth football team on Centennial's field at the time. Henderson didn't take Flournoy into custody but instead chose to help him by getting him on the team, helping him at school and eventually becoming his legal guardian. Exec Rodney Ferrell is shepherding the untitled Derwin Henderson project for Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler. Heather Courtney and Poppy Hanks are overseeing it at State Street. State Street's credits include Men of Honor, Soul Food (the film and the television series), Barbershop and the upcoming Barbershop 2. The company is repped by Steve Burkow at Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Lurie, and Stiffelman as well as CAA. Quashie wrote Boston Stranglers, which is set up at Paramount with Carl Frankin attached to direct, and Lazarus, which is in turnaround from Sony. He is repped by Principato-Young and UTA.
