Apple TV+ has canceled “Constellation” after one season.
The series starred Noomi Rapace as Jo, an astronaut who discovered that key pieces of her life seemed to be missing upon returning to Earth after a disaster in space, and set out on a quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover what she’d lost. Along with Rapace, the cast included James D’Arcy as Magnus, Julian Looman as Frederic, William Catlett as Paul, Barbara Sukowa as Irena and Rosie and Davina Coleman as Alice.
“Constellation” premiered in February and ran through March. The series received a score of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, though Variety critic Alison Herman wrote in her review that, “There’s a fine line between enticing the audience with a promise for answers and confusing them with an amorphous mass of hints and atmospherics. By straining to sustain a suspenseful mood over an entire season,...

Review: Man, the International Space Station is getting trashed lately. For years, films like Gravity and The Cloverfield Paradox as well as countless others have used the station as the setting for disaster, but this year alone has had more than one project featuring it. First, the horror film I.S.S. made the triumphant existence of a joint space station a thing of terror and now Constellation fills viewers with a sense of foreboding surrounding the orbiting satellite. Exclusive: On October 9, 2023, two days after the massacre in the south of Israel which has led to an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian militant groups, Oscar-nominated Jewish writer-director Joseph Cedar called his Palestinian friend, fellow writer-director Tawfik Abu Wael. The two had co-created and co-directed the television series Our Boys for HBO (along with Hagai Levi). That series recreated the events surrounding the murder of Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khedeir in 2014, which ultimately led to an outbreak of war in Gaza that year.

It is fair to assume Criterion could plunder the world of licensed film to build an ultimate noir playlist; credit, then, for focusing sharp and nabbing deep cuts. The Criterion Channel’s November / Noirvember program will be headlined by “Fox Noir,” an eight-title program with Otto Preminger deep cut Fallen Angel, three by Henry Hathaway, Siodmak, Dassin, Kazan, and Robert Wise, and while retrospectives of Veronica Lake and John Garfield will bring some canon into the fold, I’m mostly thinking about that potential for discovery.

This week’s impeachment hearings — in which countless witnesses reaffirmed how Donald Trump had withheld aid to Ukraine until the country agreed to investigate the son of political rival Joe Biden (something even Trump has more or less admitted to) — was nonetheless a reminder how even the truth won’t prevent competing narratives in the media. For storytellers looking to accurately document real-life events for TV or film, that makes telling the definitive story even more challenging.
And yet, true-life stories have come to dominate TV, particularly in the limited series category. While remakes and reboots of old intellectual property is hot in the regular series realm, programmers are leaning into ripped-from-the-headlines tales to captivate audiences in 6, 8 or 10-hour segments. Among some of the current contenders in various longform awards races include Emmy winners like “Chernobyl,” “When They See Us,” “Fosse/Verdon” and “The Act,” while “The Loudest Voice” and...

Let’s get one thing clear: The imagery brought to mind throughout “Our Boys” is horrific; however, the imagery actually seen onscreen is anything but. It’s a crucial distinction to make, as HBO subscribers weigh whether or not to embark on a 10-hour journey into multiple child murders, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and, ultimately, the 2014 war in Gaza. Handling the dense storytelling is one thing; understanding the age-old conflicts between secular Israelis and ultra-Orthodox Jews is another.
But the core story itself, told primarily through the investigation into Mohammed Abu Khdeir’s death, is a far cry from the bloody, gut-wrenching imagery used in other true crime tales. “Our Boys” is carefully constructed to be accessible. Creators Hagai Levi, Joseph Cedar, and Tawfik Abu-Wael want this story to be heard worldwide, and the early episodes depict the death and ensuing violence in a visually palatable (yet emotionally shattering) fashion, hooking...

HBO recently landed a surprise smash in “Chernobyl,” which that used recent history to deliver a potent, tart message. The Israeli project “Our Boys,” another limited series from the cabler which premiered Monday night, is less immediately accessible, but has similar goals: To dig into a story in recent memory and to find within it both drama and a thesis statement.
This story centers on the 2014 disappearance of Mohammed, a young Palestinian (Ram Masarweh), who goes missing shortly after three Israeli Jewish boys are kidnapped and killed. The case smacks of vengeance and comes to be revealed as a story not just of kidnapping or murder but of horrific abuse. It brings the prejudices of all parties it touches into the light, too, as when an Israeli cop declares, “I know Israeli racism, but Jews don’t do something like this.” It seems impossible to the nation’s ruling class...

It brings the prejudices of all parties it touches into the light, too, as when an Israeli cop declares, “I know Israeli racism, but Jews don’t do something like this.” It seems impossible to the nation’s ruling class...

HBO has long been known for its searing dramatizations of real events, most notably with this year's Chernobyl. In one of its latest projects, the prestige network looks to the tragic true story that prompted the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict in Our Boys. Helmed by Academy Award nominee Joseph Cedar alongside Tawfik Abu-Wael and Hagai Levi, the new limited series portrays the events around the kidnapping and killings of three Israeli teenagers and a Palestinian teenager. While there has been much news coverage surrounding the 2014 war that took place after their deaths, Our Boys dives deep into the impact of the tragedies on the victims' families.
The story begins on June 12, 2014, when three Israeli teenagers - Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaer, and Eyal Yifrach - were kidnapped at a hitchhiking station in the Israel settlement of the West Bank. Shaer made a call to the police, and a recording captured sounds of gunfire and shouting.

In this week’s International TV Newswire: Frédérique Bredin announces she won’t run for another term at France’s National Cinema Center (Cnc); Mexican broadcaster Televisa’s profits plummet; HBO pre-buys Keshet’s “Our Boys” for Latin America and Europe; Patrick Vien changes roles at A+E; new Greek government re-aligns public broadcasters; and VODs are still under the upcoming 30% European series quota.
Frédérique Bredin Exits Cnc as France Fears for Cultural Exception
Over 1992-93, France fought Hollywood. for its powerful French cinema quotas and subsidies – part of its so-called cultural exception – to be excluded from the Gatt round of trade talks, liberalizing commerce. France won. Now France’s movie industry fears that its once sacrosanct public-sector support for cinema will be dismantled by the French government itself. Though first and foremost a cinema concern, the threat could have important concerns for France’s TV industry as well.

When Katriel Schory took over as topper of the Israel Film Fund some 20 years ago, its domestic cinema was at a low point.
“The late ’90s were the worst in terms of audiences in Israel for Israeli films and they had mostly disappeared from festivals,” he says. “There were zero co-productions.”
Schory came in with a three-point plan: to help the Israeli film community regain their self-confidence; for the fund to completely revamp the way they read and select projects, i.e., to look for stories, projects and filmmakers from all walks of life and from all the regions and cultures comprising the country; and to divert a certain part of the budget for the marketing, distribution and release of films in Israel.
At that time, Israel had only a small number of co-production treaties. Over the years, Schory negotiated numerous others; now Israel has agreements with 20 countries. He takes...
