Actor Nick Cheung is back behind (and in front of) the camera with a new horror feature. Always vocal about his desire to keep the Hong Kong horror scene alive, the director returns with “Peg O' My Heart,” a thrilling adventure through the human subconscious. The film had its world premiere at the 26th edition of Udine's Far East Film Festival.

“Takano Tofu” claimed double honors on the closing night of the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy. It won the Golden Mulberry audience award and the MyMovies Purple Mulberry award.
Directed by Mihara Mitsuhiro, “Takano Tofu” is a melodrama about an elderly tofu-making craftsman, who is stuck in his ways but is also experimental and who is kindly, but whose stubbornness brings suffering on those around him. Udine’s Japan selector, Mark Schilling compared the work to that of master director Ozu Yasujiro.
The prizes were handed out in the early hours of Friday after a marathon day of celebratory activity that started with Chinese director Zhang Yimou on hand for a screening of his “Raise the Red Lantern,” continued with a generous-spirited masterclass and in the evening continued with the handover of Zhang’s lifetime achievement award. The late Benny Chan directed “The White Storm” back in 2013 starring Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Nick Cheung. In “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords” (2019) which starred Andy Lau and Louis Koo, Herman Yau took over as director. Now in 2023, Yau is back in this in-title-only third installment again featuring Koo, Lau Ching Wan and Aaran Kwok, the newcomer to the series. All these actors play different characters altogether but the themes of war against drugs, royalty and brotherhood are still there but told in a new storyline.

When it comes to big-budget productions made in Hong Kong, few could hold a candle to director Benny Chan whose resume includes such titles like “Rob-b-Hood”, “New Police Story” and “Raging Fire”, his last work before his death. As he was approached to do a remake of David R. Ellis' action-thriller “Cellular”, Chan did not have to think twice about the proposition since it gave him the chance to put the original premise within the Hong Kong culture, and therefore making his version much more than a mere copy as you might assume as first glance. “Connected”, which is currently streaming on Netflix, includes the ingredients typical for the kind of action thriller Chan is known for, as well as some impressive stunt work and great performances, especially leading man Louis Koo playing an unlikely hero.

During the early nineties in Hong Kong, the prolific screenwriter, producer, director and sometime actor Wong Jing made quite a number of crowd-pleasing action comedies which was a highly popular genre back then. Although wacky and action packed in nature, his films like “Tricky Brains”, “Royal Tramp”, “Legend of the Liquid Sword”, “Flying Dagger”, “Holy Weapon” and so on were commercially successful productions. Fast forward to 2011 and with a bigger Mainland budget, plus the help of two award-winning actors, Wong ws back and doing pretty much the same old thing. Set in White Horse Town, ancient China, “Treasure Inn” revolves around young Master Kung (Nicholas Tse) and Lo Pa (Nick Cheung), two lowly and underappreciated constables who work in the courthouse kitchen and laundry instead of doing proper investigating duties.

Hong Kong actor Louis Koo loves science fiction and collects “Stars War” merchandise so it is no surprise that he would produce a sci-fi film financed by his own company “One Cool Film Production”. Although it would take him a few years to finish his expensive personal project, it eventually paid off big time to the tune of over HK80 Million and became the highest grossing domestic film at the local box office. Furthermore it went worldwide due to it being streamed on Netflix.

Warriors of Future is a sci-fi action movie directed by Yuen Fai Ng, starring Louis Koo, Carina Lau, Lau Ching-Wan and Nick Cheung.

Premise Warriors of Future (2022)
The year is 2055, when a meteor carrying a destructive plant strikes the world, a suicide squad is given hours to save their post-apocalyptic city from total collapse. There is a catch-22 though, the military has been relying on robots.
Warriors of Future (2022) Movie Review
A rather entertaining movie, with acceptable special effects, and a script that does not lack humor.
Its director, Yuen Fai Ng, with his creative background in the special effects world, knows how to make good use of his know-how.
Do not expect profundity in the characterizations, as this is pure action. The acting and the script are not particularly convincing, but it is nevertheless an amusing number.

Action and casino movies are two of the most popular movie genres in the world. In this blog post, we will take a look at some of the best Asian action and casino movies. These films are sure to get your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping!
Why are these films so popular?
There are many reasons why action and casino movies are so popular. For one, they are usually packed with non-stop action and excitement. They often have larger-than-life characters and plots that keep you on the edge of your seat. "This is an unprecedented operation." Whoa!! There's a Hong Kong sci-fi action movie called Warriors of Future that has finally opened in theaters in China and Hong Kong this summer. It was being prepped for release in 2019, with an early trailer dropping years ago. But after all the pandemic delays and lockdowns, it's only being released now. Set in the year 2055, a meteorite brings an extraterrestrial to the Earth in the form of an alien vine that "purifies the planet but kills everything in its path." (Is this anti-climate change propaganda?) When powerful alien creatures threaten humanity, Cmmdr. Sing Lee's elite forces are almost wiped out, and the surviving soldier Tai Loi discovers an even bigger conspiracy. Starring Louis Koo, Sean Lau, Carina Lau, Philip Keung, Tse Kwan-ho, and Nick Cheung. This looks Extra epic, from a VFX supervisor making his directorial debut. It's even being marketed as the...

Four years after the second installment to arguably Jackie Chan’ most popular franchise, the actor would reprise his role as police inspector Chan Ka-Kui in “Police Story 3: Supercop” (or just “Supercop” in some areas). Perhaps due to his busy schedule in front and behind the camera, working on other projects such as the equally successful “Armour of God”-films, Stanley Tong took over directing duties from Chan, who would still be a producer for the project. This collaboration turned out to be quite fruitful for both them, setting the foundation for features such as “Rumble in the Bronx”, which would give the actor the breakthrough with US-American markets after years of trying. Although the previous entries into the franchise had already set quite a high level when it came to action set pieces, “Supercop” would see Chan in the middle of some of the most ambitious and costly action scenes of his career,...

‘The Heroic Mission’ is named and inspired by two titles of To’s films during the 90s: The Heroic Trio (1992) and The Mission (1998). The imagery of ‘hero’ created by To in most of his films represents a fated statement: ‘We all came with a mission’. Influenced by the film directors King Hu, Sam Peckinpah and Akira Kurosawa, To enjoyed his international breakthrough with a film noir signature and gangster films. To specialises in angling at different characters in daily life and portraying their inner struggles and conflicts between desire and making choices. To once said, ‘I can see two to three faces of a person.’ Three films have been selected in this programme and each tells a different story about heroism.

In his third endeavour as a writer and director, Cheung ups the ante and also stars as the lead protagonist in ‘The Trough,’ a pulpy crime thriller set in a dystopian universe. ‘The Trough’ might head in every direction while simultaneously going nowhere at all, but it is a highly engaging watch for those looking for nearly two hours of ridiculously convoluted entertainment.
Nick Cheung plays Yu Qiu, a hardened undercover cop who drinks copious amounts of alcohol in a variety of forms, lurks the midnight streets of an urban dystopia ridden with crime, and skydives from dangerous mountains just to feel something.

Nowadays it seems that franchises are interested in world building and extended universes and you would think that this was a fairly modern innovation. We’ve always had spin-offs and sequels that introduce an added dimension to a cinematic world and in many respects, Wong Jing’s follow ups to his huge hit “God of Gamblers” could, to a degree, be considered an earlier example of the idea of world building. We started with the God of Gamblers in the original, then the Saint in the Stephen Chow’s more comical sequels. With “The Top Bet” we get introduced to the Saint’s sister and more female centric position before the arrival of “The Saint of Gamblers” that adds another shade of paint to a familiar formula by including a new “Saint” along with Lone Seven, a relation to the originals laconic protector. Now I’m not saying this is...

For the action movies fans, Renny Harlin has earned the status of a living legend with the films he made during the 90s: “Die Hard 2” (1990), “Cliffhanger” (1993), “The Long Kiss Goodnight” (1996) and “Deep Blue Sea” (1999). For the last five years, the Finnish-American filmmaker has been mostly working in mainland China and Hong Kong where he has helmed three films so far. “Skiptrace” (2016) was a reasonably fun action-crime-comedy starring Jackie Chan and “Jackass'” Johnny Knoxville, while “Legend of the Ancient Sword” was an expensive flop. His latest movie, “Bodies at Rest”, is an addition to the collection of Christmas-set action flicks, which premiered at the last year’s edition of Hong Kong International Film Festival, before a short festival tour that included Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy and Edinburgh International Film Festival. The theatrical release focused on the Far East markets ensued. The film is now available on DVD,...

Alan Mak is a Hong Kong helmer whose legacy exceeds the boundaries of national cinema. The reason is quite simple and part of common knowledge: “Infernal Affairs” trilogy that has spread the influence of the contemporary Hong Kong genre cinema to the whole world. Mak was not the only person responsible for it since he collaborated with Felix Chong, with whom he also did another trilogy, “Overheard”. On his own, Mak has envisioned yet another crime thriller trilogy named Integrity, which is tonally different from his previous work. After a smart and out of the box theatrical release last year for the Chinese New Year (the slot is usually reserved for featherweight comedies and dramas) that resulted in decent earnings on the box office, “Integrity” is now available on video.

“Election 2” was named as the best film of the year by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards and serves as a sequel to “Election” (2004), although there should not be any issues for those who haven’t seen it, as there is a prologue to get everyone up to speed with the Triads and their protocols.
In this film, Lam Yok, the Chairman at the end of “Election” is nearing the end of his term. As per the tradition, he must step down and become legitimised. He also must nominate one amongst his Godsons as a worthy candidate for the post of Chairman. The best option Lok has is Jimmy (Louis Koo). He is a businessman who joined the clan just for their protection and knows that there is only one way out. Jimmy needs to become chairman, but is reluctant. But when his hand is forced,...

While it seems most critics and cinephiles think of Takashi Miike when it comes to a director who displays a certain work ethic, there is, however, very few talk about Hong Kong director Johnnie To. Over the course of his long career, To has maintained a steady and constant pace consisting of three to four and sometimes even five features per year and while the quality of some of these features may vary, there is no denying the director has also many strong years under his belt. For example, in 2005 and 2006 he produced and directed “Election” and its sequel as well as “Exiled”, three movies which are perhaps among the best of To’s filmography. Along with works such as “Fulltime Killer”, the “Running Out of Time”-films and “Vengeance” To has proven to be a director who follows the footsteps of filmmakers like John Woo, but who expands their...

After two battles with Chinese censors, edgy Chinese youth drama “Better Days” came out on top this weekend as the highest-grossing film in the world with a $81.5 million three-day debut, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Globally, “Better Days” bested the worldwide haul of Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” by a few million dollars and Warner Bros.’ “Joker” by about $20 million, according to Comscore.
In China, “Better Days” obliterated all other titles, earning 10 times more than “Maleficent,” its closest competitor, which grossed $8.6 million this past weekend. In just three days, “Better Days” has not just scored double the total China gross of the Angelina Jolie-starring title, but also out-earned the Disney flick’s $65 million North American haul so far.
“Better Days” was helped by the fact that two of the biggest contenders set to debut alongside it had their Friday openings canceled. Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood...

Chinese animation “Nezha” continues its meteoric ascent to become one of China’s top-performing titles of all time, leading the weekend box office for the third week in a row thanks to a $66.5 million haul — still more than double that of its closest competitor, despite already having been in theaters for 18 days.
Its success has been boosted by a serious lack of other contenders: Every film below the top four grossers earned less than $700,000 this weekend, not even 1% of “Nezha’s” takings. The uneven performance highlights the struggles facing China’s box office this summer, as the pipeline of popular local titles dries up because of regulatory changes and a highly sensitive political anniversary coming up in October that has sent censors into overdrive.
With a total gross so far of $503 million (RMB3.55 billion), “Nezha” is already the fifth-highest-grossing title in Chinese film history, falling just behind last year’s “Operation Red Sea,...

Dante Lam wowed audiences in 2008 with the crime thriller “Beast Stalker.” The film earned multiple award nominations with star Nick Cheung scoring Best Actor prizes from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, the Hong Kong Film Awards, and the Golden Horse Awards. Unfortunately, Lam’s highly anticipated 2010 follow-up, “Fire of Conscience” with Leon Lai and Richie Jen was a letdown in comparison. “The Stool Pigeon,” released the same year as “Fire of Conscience,” attempts to recapture the glory of “Beast Stalker” by reuniting the film’s two leads—Nick Cheung and Nicholas Tse—while also adding the luminous Taiwanese actress Gwei Lun-Mei to the mix. Despite these accolades, the resultant film is a depressing, melodrama-heavy crime thriller that feels more like a lateral move for Dante Lam, rather than a return to form.

The Chinese film industry may not yet have emerged from a “cold winter” production freeze, nor its box office kept pace with 2018. But but those inclement elements did not put a chill on the pageantry at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
The opening ceremony for the festival’s 22nd edition went ahead Saturday with the usual red carpet parade, and with the habitual speeches and formalities. But it did so without the scheduled world premiere screening of Guan Hu’s “The Eight Hundred.”
News that the historical war film had been cancelled “for technical reasons” was abruptly circulated just 24 hours earlier — too late for the festival to arrange another new film to take its place. The screening of the second opening film, Chinese drama “Beautiful Voyage,” went forward as planned.
