Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.

From the outset, “God of War” had all the collateral of being a great film, starting with the big budget, continuing with the historic/epic/based-on-actual-events setting, and finishing with the collaboration of three legends of Asian cinema, Sammo Hung, Yasuaki Kurata and Gordon Chan, plus the already iconic Vincent Zhao. Furthermore, and contrary to the usual outcome of films that seem to have it all, which usually end up as complete blunders, “God of War” succeeds in every aspect.
“God of War” is part of the Asian selection at Fantasia International Film Festival
The story takes place in 1557 China, a place that suffers from political turmoil, but also from the attacks of Japanese pirates, a group consisting of samurai, ronin and local allies, who pillage along the coastline. Vincent Zhao stars as the eponymous military tactician in Gordon Chan’s sweeping action epic, following the efforts of the Ming army to keep a fleet of fearsome Japanese pirates at bay in 16th century China. Sammo Hung, Wan Qian and Yasuaki Kurata also star in this uneven, yet respectful tale of strategy and courage. As the East coast of China is repeatedly plundered by marauding pirates from Japan, Ming army Commander Yu Dayou (Sammo Hung) turns to renowned tactician General Qi Jiguang (Vincent Zhao) for help and guidance. Qi believes he would be of more use away from the front, training the army in newly devised techniques, but he is persuaded into fulfilling those orders on the road, leading a modest force in a...

Strategy's the star in God of War, Gordon Chan's historical action film about a Ming Dynasty commander intent on beating a superior force of pirates led by Japanese samurai. Vincent Zhao is well cast as a stiff, duty-driven warrior who steps into the shoes of a General (Sammo Hung, known in the U.S. as Jackie Chan's frequent co-star) whose long campaign against the pirates bore no fruit. Competent on all fronts but never dazzling, it should please genre devotees but won't cross over to a broader audience.

As a long time Jet Li fan, and a huge fan of his Fong Sai-yuk series of films, I jumped at the chance to review this release from Cine Asia. First, let’s get the specs out of the way. The 126 minute, 1993 film is presented in 16:9 widescreen, with both a 2.0 Cantonese and 5.1 English soundtrack, and optional English subtitles. Special features consist of an audio commentary from Hong Kong cinema expert Bay Logan, and interviews with director and fight choreographer Corey Yuen, and writer Jeff Lau.
The video quality is not brilliant, but about what you’d expect due to the nature of the movie, its age and original country of origin. The version presented is the Dimension re-scored and re-edited version,...

Sammo Hung has been involved in Martial Arts since childhood and even at the ripe old age of 64, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down (Thank god). It was great to see Sammo back in big movies over the past few years, which includes Rise Of The Legend and Once Upon A Time In Shanghai, both made in 2014.
Here are three upcoming Sammo Hung movies to look forward too this year and fingers crossed he works one more time with Peking opera brothers Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao, before they retire.
*Jackie Chan was set to play the lead role in My Beloved Bodyguard, but due to filming Dragon Blade he couldn’t make the movie. Andy Lau stepped in the role later on.

Exclusive: Hong Kong outfit also introduces Jia Zhangke martial arts project to buyers.
Hong Kong’s Media Asia Films is launching sales on two high-profile action titles at the Efm – Gordon Chan’s God Of War [pictured] and the first martial arts project from Chinese auteur Jia Zhangke.
Jia’s as-yet-untitled project has Johnnie To on board as producer. Set at the end of the Qing Dynasty, it explores the turbulence amongst scholars, bandits and local officials following the abolition of the imperial examination system.
“The script touches on social and geopolitical issues, as Jia Zhangke’s films usually do, but he’s also a huge fan of Hong Kong-style action so this will be a martial arts genre title,” said Media Asia general manager and head of sales and international co-productions Fred Tsui.

‘Special ID’ has a very big problem: the story of its making (a boring ego-driven tour de force between movie makers and movie stars that crippled the final product) is better than the story within the movie itself. That’s tough, as Mr. Yen’s fans eagerly hoped ‘Special ID’ to be Donnie‘s triumphant return to contemporary rough and dirty Mma-style brawling films after his 6 years ‘classic-fu’ hiatus (that fortunately left gems like ‘Wu Xia’ for us to enjoy). Don’t get me wrong: the movie has good fighting scenes that, although not quite as good as the ones in ‘Flashpoint’, are far from disappointing. Oh, and a fairly impressive car chase. But that’s about it. Almost everything else looks like a sample book of patches covering up the holes...

Our pals at Well Go USA are releasing the Vincent Zhao/Fan Siu Wong martial arts adventure, Wu Dang, on Blu-ray and DVD in the Us next week, and they've graced us with an exclusive early look at the trailer. The film is a neat little adventure with some impressive martial arts action, I liked it far more than I expected to. Here's the synopsis and trailer from Well Go USA!There is a rumor: secret treasures hide in Wu Dang mountain. In the early days of Republican China, an American man - greedy for gold and hungry for riches - brings his daughter, a prodigy in martial arts, to compete for a championship title in kung fu combat, while planning to find and steal the riches for himself. It won't be easy. ...

Debuting on Blu-Ray and DVD this 4th of December is “Wu Dang”, a new enthralling kung-fu action-adventure from Patrick Leung, filmmaker behind “Blade of Kings”. Any type of kung-fu is, let’s face it, kick-ass and legitimately is kick-ass; but Leung’s “Wu Dang” makes it even better as he fleshes out for the first time in cinema, the art of Wu Dang kung-fu, and the mysticism of Yin and Yang. The movie’s tense and kick-ass martial arts sequences are crafted by action choreographer Corey Yuen from “Shaolin”, anything less than Yuen would be disappointing. And if you’re smart, when Yuen is choreographing, you know you’re in for some good stuff.
“Wu Dang” follows a greedy American man who brings his prodigal martial artist daughter to enter a kung-fu championship he sponsored himself. You have seen it coming, his hidden agenda: to steal the Wu Dang treasures...

Much like the final product may resemble, this trailer is a flurry of images that look appealing, but don’t seem to tie together much. Meaning, I have very little idea what the story could be for this trailer after a couple of glances, but at least my eyes are curious about the visuals. (And I think it’s fair to say that audiences are immune to a simple usage of the word “destiny.”) Indeed, this is from someone who was an integral creative force for films like Kill Bill and The Matrix trilogy (director Yuen).

Review of True Legend: Part of what makes it so entertaining is its embrace of the fantastical. True Legend’s groovy, vintage exploitation-style poster recalls the kung fu craze of the 70s, much as this Chinese-Hong Kong film does through its over-the-top fight scenes, sensational storytelling and larger-than-life characters. But director Yuen Woo Ping balances his homage with decidedly modern effects, from impressive CGI to, most notably, his groundbreaking, floating martial arts choreography, with which he’s wowed plenty a moviegoer before in the Matrix and Kill Bill series and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In the film, retired Qing dynasty general Su Can (Vincent Zhao, or, as the martial arts leviathan is known in China, Man Cheuk Chiu) lives a humble teacher’s life until his vengeful, monstrously transformed brother Yuan (Andy On), returns from war armed with the deadly “Five Venom Fists.” Yuan murders their father, poisons and hurls...

The name Woo-ping Yuen may not sound familiar to general filmgoers, but you don't have to be a martial-arts film fan to have witnessed Master Yuen's contribution to the action movie industry. Best known to the general populace for his contribution to The Matrix and Kill Bill series, Yuen is an international legend due in part to his action/fight choreography and martial arts direction. He's often credited with playing an integral part in action/martial arts star Jackie Chan's career by casting and directing him in the 1978 classic martial arts film Drunken Master.
One would think that with over 40 years of experience under his belt, the 65-year-old Yuen would be ready to rest on his laurels -- not so, as he returns to the director's chair for the first time in almost 15 years with True Legend, a Fantastic Fest 2010 selection that returns to Austin on Friday for a...

There are a lot of new and re-released martial arts films that make their way to my review stack, so I've devised a way of determining which to watch that I'm happy to share with you. I slap the disc in then check out the opening fight sequence. If I don't say "holy sh*t!" at least twice, I know not to bother. With True Legend, the fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping's return to the director's chair, I think I holy shat about five times.
Ostensibly set in the 1860s at the end of the Qing Dynasty, the opening battle looks more like Middle Earth than anything from history. A band of interlopers stealthily cross rope bridges and use Wolverine-ish claws to climb a dark stone tower. (Why bad guys think keeping their fortresses high above bottomless pits won't one day bite them in the ass is beyond me.) A breathtaking...

Two brothers, one legend. We were asked to exclusively premiere a kick ass set of 8 photos from kung fu master Yuen Woo-Ping's latest martial arts epic True Legend and I just couldn't pass this up, as I really did love this flick. Best of all, these are awesome photos, especially in compliment to the official trailer, and there's even a few behind-the-scenes shots giving us a glimpse of the legend Woo-Ping hard at work. What I loved about the movie is that it's a true epic, the story spans lifetimes and there's a few weird, but awesome, moments, like those involving the "God of Wushu" played by Jay Chou. Check out all 8 new photos below. If you haven't yet, go watch the latest trailer. Seriously, these look great, I really can't wait to see this again! Two brothers, one legend. Indomina Releasing has debuted the official Us trailer on Apple for kung fu master Yuen Woo-Ping's newest martial arts epic True Legend, starring Man Cheuk Chiu, Xun Zhou and Michelle Yeoh. This is the awesome martial arts epic that I've been raving about since seeing it (with the legend Yuen Woo-Ping in attendance) last year at Fantastic Fest. This trailer is such a great sell, too - the way it builds and the music at the end. I can't wait to see this again and add it to my growing martial arts DVD collection, as I'll rewatch it over and over. If you love kung fu, you've got to check this out. Kick ass! Hey gang! Check out this awesome new 1970's style throwback poster to Yuen Woo Ping's upcoming martial arts film True Legend. For those of you who don't know Woo Ping was the kung fu choreographer of death on The Matrix films, Kill Bill 1 and 2, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Fearless. He was also the director of several classic martial arts films including Snake in Eagle's Shadow, Twin Warriors and Iron Monkey.
The movie was shown at Fantastic Fest last year, and I heard that it was pretty freakin' awesome, so this seems like a movie we can look forward to watching, especially if your a martial arts film fan.
Here's the plot of the movie:
Su Qi-Er (Man Cheuk Chiu) is a wealthy man living during the Qing Dynasty who loses his fortune and reputation as a result of a conspiracy against him. After being forced out onto the streets,...

True Legend
Stars: Man Cheuk Chiu, Xun Zhou, Michelle Yeoh | Written by To Chi-long | Directed by Yuen Woo-ping
Yuen Woo-ping is considered by most, including myself, to be the absolute daddy when it comes to choreographing a fight scene that will make you salivate like a drunken toddler. The Wachowski brothers played a large part in making him the go-to guy in Hollywood, when they hired him to create some of the most memorable fight sequences ever committed to film for The Matrix Trilogy and this was also instrumental in his hiring for the Kill Bill double bill by Quentin Tarantino. I had the pleasure of writing a massive dissertation at King’s College on whether or not Woo-ping can be considered an auteur and from my research I found that there is a particular style and essence to his fight sequences that really are unrivalled by most other people anywhere in the world.

Yuen Woo-Ping has carved a name for himself in the mainstream conciousness as the fight choreographer and martial arts advisor on films such as The Matrix and Kill Bill, however Yuen Woo-Ping is also a world reknown director – helming such classic films as Drunken Master, The Magnificent Butcher, and Tai Chi Master. Ping has finally returned to the directors chair for True Legend (aka The Legend of Beggar Su), his first feature film since 1996’s Iron Monkey 2.
