When you think of romantic comedies, odds are you are not picturing films like I Robot or The Terminator. That is because science fiction tales about androids and artificial intelligence are typically fodder for terrifying thrillers and action movies. But, in an unexpected blend of genres, we now have a movie that combines the raunch of a sex comedy, the love of a romantic film, and the concepts of science fiction into a movie replete with humor, machines, and a dose of politics.
Directed by Casper Christensen and Anthony Hines, Robots is “Set in an era where advanced robotics have enabled humanity to utilize lifelike androids as servants and manual laborers, affluent suburbanites Elaine and Charles use android doubles of themselves to avoid the time constraints of dating. If there were an award only for taking on as many jobs as possible, Anthony Hines and Casper Christensen’s Robot would doubtlessly win it. It’s not your run-of-the-mill sci-fi rom-com. While most rom-coms take their pick out of a list of minor conflicts to conquer by the end of the movie, Robots aims to address America’s hatred for immigrants and hopes to fix an insufferable man-child and an odd gold-digger at the same time. How does it fare? It depends on who you ask. First, let’s get your doubts cleared up about what goes down in Elaine and Charles’ lives when their advanced lookalike androids go rogue.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Summary: What Happens In ‘Robots’?
Here we are in the dystopian aftermath of what could’ve been the state of America if Trump’s dream of keeping Mexican immigrants out with a giant, unsightly wall had come true.

Plot: Charles is a womanizer while Elaine is a gold digger. The duo learn humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves.
Review: Romantic comedies tend to be wholesome and enjoyable without any sort of pertinent social message. The same goes for the typical raunchy sex comedy. Rarely are these two sub-genres seen bundled together, least of all with a science fiction twist. The new film Robots, starring Jack Whitehall and Shailene Woodley, is both a sex comedy and a romantic one but with a sci-fi angle that is all packaged together into a relevant social message about the immigration reform in the United States. If that sounds like a heavy subject matter, rest assured that it delivers a coherent and funny message that may not be quite as strong as the filmmakers hoped. Nevertheless, Robots is a unique blend of styles that is heartfelt and funny.

Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies) and Jack Whitehall (Bad Education) play dual roles as a couple who are shocked to realize that their robot doubles have fallen in love in Robots. It’s really weird that Neon hasn’t done any advertising for Robots, given that it’s set for theatrical release on May 19, 2023. The trailer’s release less than a month out of the film’s premiere is probably the first time most people – other than diehard Woodley or Whitehall fans – will realize this sci-fi comedy exists.
Neon released this very basic synopsis: “Charles is a womanizer while Elaine is a gold digger. The duo learn humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves.”
The comedy is based on a short story by Robert Sheckley and is co-written and co-directed by Anthony Hines (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) and Casper Christensen (Klown). Stephen Camel, Julian Favre, Cassian Elwes,...

"This is terrible! They've completely stolen our lives!" A perfect robo-couple on the run? Neon has revealed an official trailer for an indie sci-fi comedy called Robots, made by two comedy filmmakers named Casper Christensen (Klown) & Anthony Hines (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). This has shown up out of nowhere with a quiet summer release, which is an early sign that it's not very good. As the title indicates, it's actually about androids - or two robots - who go off on their own adventure. Charles is a womanizer while Elaine is a gold digger. The duo learn to regain their humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves. Starring Shailene Woodley x2 as Elaine, and Jack Whitehall x2 as Charles, Emanuela Postacchini, Chelsea Edmundson, and Richard Lippert. This looks super awkward and not as funny as it should, coming across as a made-for-tv movie more than an indie comedy.

As the German series industry continues to change rapidly, young filmmakers who decided to leave the country are coming back, ready to tell their stories.
“I had to return and use my voice. That’s why my [production] company is called Third Culture Kids. That’s what I am and what many people around the world are,” said Perso German actor and writer Sara Fazilat during the Face to Face with German Filmmakers: Serious about Series event at Series Mania in Lille, France.
The session was powered by German Films, an institution dedicated to promoting German films abroad.
Currently, Fazilat is developing the show “Underdogs” about people who turn their supposed weaknesses into superpowers.
As pointed out by actor Jerry Hoffmann, who recently wrapped up Netflix’s original series “A Submarine Story” in Turkey, the concept of what counts as “German” continues to be questioned.
“Normally, when you have one German character in an international production,...

A project that might be too close to the wire to be a part of the Sundance line-up, but with two heads are better philosophy this co-directing team comprised of Ant Hines (best known for writing Sacha Baron Cohen’s feature film projects) and Casper Christensen (a funnybone friendly Danish scribe popular for 2010’s Klown and about two decades worth of TV Series writing) might actually get across the finish line. Shailene Woodley will star in “Robots,” which is being described as a “fast-paced comedy” from Anthony Hines, one of the writers of “Borat” and “Bruno.” It marks a change of pace for Woodley, best known for the dystopian “Divergent” films and the dare-you-not-to-devolve-into-a-puddle-of-tears romance “The Fault in Our Stars.”

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as a pair of rival con artists in The Hustle, a remake of 1988′s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (with Michael Caine and Steve Martin), which was itself a remake of 1964′s Bedtime Story, with David Niven and Marlon Brando. A project not many people believe in, but he gathers an electic team of specialists to help him out. However, as soon as the crew moves to the provinces to start working on the project, they come up against serious problems, because nobody there is ready for a man with Thorkild’s grand ideas. It was back in July that we first brought word of a new comedy written by and starring Klown duo Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen. At the time it was known only by the Danish title of De første danske jordbær but it has since adopted the international title of Dan-Dream and has recently released the first image of the cast so we can get a taste of what's brewing. Precise plot details are still being kept under wraps with the only hint being that the film is based on the concept of the Jante Law, which is not a legal term but a sort of social law describing the sort of social shaming meant to keep anyone from standing out from the collective with...

A huge star in his native Denmark and well known around the world for his work on the Klown films and television series, Danish comic Casper Christensen serves as the screenwriter of Nikolaj Peyk's Undercover - a new crime comedy designed to show off the talents of comedienne Linda P. Rikke, allegedly Denmark’s worst police officer, is looking forward to Christmas with roast duck and rice pudding. But on Christmas Eve, she is assigned to her first undercover mission: she must follow petty criminal and crown witness Mick to the island of Funen, before an infamous gangster boss and his minions get their hands on him and the 120,000 euros he has stolen. The involvement of Christensen makes this immediately of interest in these parts...

There is no phrase in Danish for “game changer.” For so many reasons, this feels significant to understanding “Klown Forever,” a movie that doesn’t demand understanding so much as grit. If you’ve not yet had the pleasure of making acquaintances with Danish actors Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen, then you’re probably better off than the […]

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Captain America: Civil War (Russos)
In seeking to create an expansive multi-film universe, Marvel has managed to both bless and curse each of its subsequent films. The blessing comes in the form of a character development that takes place over the course of films and phases instead of scenes and acts. Tragedy is easy. Comedy is hard. And making a comedy sequel is impossible Four years ago, Klown (original Danish title: Klovn) blew into worldwide cinematic consciousness as a wickedly funny, perversely smutty, and utterly original comedy. Born on a television series, Frank (Frank Hvam) and Casper (Casper Christensen) are longtime friends, constantly led into ridiculous situations by their own personality traits. Casper is the magnetic one, ready to plunge into new waters on a moment's notice, while Frank tends to hold back before joining Casper, although his self-control is never too strong. In the years since the original movie, Frank and Casper have become famous in Denmark, and are preparing to publish a promotional book about friendship, a friendship that is now on the rocks....

Comedy is notoriously hard to translate, but apparently men are pigs in every language. At least, that’s what comes through in the Klown movies, based on the long-running Danish comedy series starring real-life famous comedians Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen as exaggerated versions of themselves. If you think that sounds like Larry David’s HBO sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm, you’re correct. And the comparisons don’t stop there: Like Curb, Klown’s humor is based around its protagonists’ personal failings, and how those failings lead to awkward situations. There’s one key difference, though. On Curb, it’s Larry David’s neuroses that drive his frequent public humiliation. In Klown, the problem is more that Casper and Frank can’t keep it in their pants.

If there was an Olympics for cringe-comedy, Klown would go home with a gold medal every time. For those of you not familiar with Klown, it’s a Danish television series about two friends, Frank (Frank Hvam) and Casper (Casper Christensen), and their innate ability to make the worst choices humanly possible. In 2010, they made a feature film which Drafthouse Films released here in the Us. two years later. Klown told the story of a horrifying camping trip, meant as a bacchanal for Casper and Frank, that turns into something totally different when Frank brings along his girlfriend’s nephew in an effort to prove to her that he could make a good father someday. It is very funny, and it is mortifying in scene after scene. Mikkel Norgaard is a prolific director, helming the majority of the 60 episodes of the show and directing both the 2010 film and Klown Forever,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Fede Alvarez’s thriller Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems), starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang, won the weekend, but it did way more than we predicted, doing better than most movies released in the last weekend of August, winning the weekend with $26.4 million, pretty much double what I predicted. That’s a pretty great testament to the power of Screen Gems’ marketing campaign and that’s more than double what the movie cost to make. Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection (Summit/Lionsgate) didn’t fare as well as it opened in fifth place with $7.5 million in 2,258 theaters, about where I predicted. Of the more moderate releases, the Obama date movie Southside with You (Roadside Attractions) took in $3 million in around 800 theaters,...

In 2012, Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen’s Danish comedy “Klown,” based on their Danish TV sitcom of the same name, had its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest, where it won Best Picture and Best Screenplay in the comedy category. The film follows Frank (Hvam) who kidnaps his pregnant girlfriend’s 12-year-old nephew and takes him on a debauched canoe trip with his best friend Casper (Christensen). It received critical acclaim for its “Curb Your Enthusiasm”-esque cringe comedy and its raunchy set pieces.

Meta-sitcoms starring famous comedians as exaggerated versions of themselves aren’t unique to America. Nor, for that matter, are bad dads. Both feature prominently in Klown Forever, the sequel to 2010’s most outrageous comedy about kidnapping your girlfriend’s 12-year-old nephew and taking him along on an adultery road trip. Based on a popular Danish TV series, the Klown movies star comedy duo Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam as filthy-minded parodies of themselves.
In their new movie, Casper decides to move from Copenhagen to Los Angeles, leaving his old friend and comedy partner behind. Feeling betrayed and rejected, Frank takes the news hard—so much so that he somehow manages to be even more neglectful of his infant son than usual during a swimming class.

Racism, sexism, inappropriate coupling: Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen cheerily mine every taboo for a laugh in this sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit
When the film Klovn (Klown) shot to notoriety on the festival circuit in 2012, it did so with the benefit of surprise. Only those familiar with its six seasons on Danish TV could have seen it coming. But when, in the first few moments, meek schlemiel Frank (Frank Hvam) ejaculates into his mother-in-law’s eye, it wasn’t just the shock that got laughs, but the humanity with which it happened. It’s not like we in the audience were thinking “Oh, I’ve been there” but we could see how Frank’s alpha male buddy Casper (Casper Christensen) could lead a lovable yutz like Frank into a situation where this could occur.
Klown’s style of humour feels like every Curb Your Enthusiasm bit that has been rejected for going too far.

We are delighted to share an exclusive poster for Klown Forever, featuring art by Johnny Ryan. Some -- Ok, probably almost everybody -- might consider the poster to be Nsfw (Not Safe For Work), which is why we've parked it below (scroll down, but beware of the adult nature of the imagery). Speaking solely for myself, I believe this is a brilliant poster that captures the essence of one scene in particular while also picturing the essence of a very improper and raucous and very, very funny comedy that I loved when I got to see it at Fantastic Fest last year. Here's the synopsis: Klown Forever follows estranged best friends Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam as they travel to the States seeking fame, fortune...

In 2010, “Klown” introduced the world to Frank and Casper — played by comedians Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen — a mismatched set of friends with a knack for doing the wrong thing, and getting in wildly over their head. The movie was an arthouse and cult favorite, proving that American moviemakers didn’t have the sole domain […]
