Acclaimed filmmaker John Sayles has revealed exactly what he thinks of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Sayles wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated 1996 film “Lone Star,” a Western set in a Texas border town where Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) unearths long-buried secrets amid racial strife. Since the film was made, a U.S.-Mexico border wall, a pivotal part of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and known colloquially as “Trump’s wall,” has been built.
In a new interview with The Guardian, Sayles admitted that he recently urinated on the wall.
“I don’t think we’ve made any progress on border issues since the movie was made. Back then, it didn’t have the same tension. The border patrol would just say no me hagas correr to illegal immigrants – don’t make me run – and deport them,” Sayles said. “I don...

J.I.D is sitting in the green room of the Universal Music Group’s offices watching a replay of a football game. He had just finished eating some takeout when I walked in. The Atlanta Mc has had hundreds of performances in his career, but he’s never quite had a set like the one he performed for a small, invite-only crowd in Manhattan, where he performed a song that will never be formally released to the public.
He partnered with 5 Gum to put together a custom track for their Hip-Hop 50 celebration.

Pulsar Content has acquired “Niki,” a film about the famous French-American artist Niki de Saint-Phalle, for international sales. The Paris-based banner will introduce the period project to buyers at the Cannes market with exclusive first stills.
“Niki” marks the feature debut of popular French actor Céline Sallette and stars Charlotte Le Bon (“The Walk” “Saint-Laurent”) as de Saint-Phalle.
Le Bon recently made her feature debut with “Falcon Lake” — which bowed at Cannes last year — and previously starred in Robert Zemeckis’s “The Walk,” as well as Terry George’s “The Promise” and Jalil Lespert’s “Saint-Laurent.” Le Bon stars in “Niki” opposite Damien Bonnard (“Les Misérables“).
The movie will portray Saint-Phalle from the age of 23, when she’s still a model and an aspiring actor who is married and has a two-year-old daughter, Laura. Together, they flee the U.S. during the oppressive McCarthy era and come to France, where they experience a short-lived euphoria.

Jivkov played John opposite Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci in The Passion Of the Christ, which grossed $612M worldwide. The award-winning documentary Navalny could be crowned with an Oscar nomination later this month, but the man whose story is told in it has never seen the film. Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader, remains behind bars under a lengthy sentence after daring to criticize President Vladimir Putin.
“For me, that’s a very bitter part of this,” director Daniel Roher tells Deadline. “It’s very sad that he hasn’t gotten to see the film. One thing I always think of with Navalny is how enthusiastic he was about being a film subject. He’s a very curious man and he’s very, very curious about the filmmaking process… I certainly hope I’ll get to show it to him one day.”
The documentary from CNN Films unfolds like a political thriller, investigating the poisoning plot in August 2020 that nearly cost Navalny his life.

Any day now the renovated Chelsea Hotel will fully reopen, capping a drawn out process that has seen the grand edifice on the west side of Manhattan shrouded in netting and defaced by scaffolding for over a decade.
Repeated construction delays, legal wrangling between residents and the building owners, as well as a dispute with the city agency devoted to historic properties all contributed to the endless postponements. But the magic of a place that has been home to the artistic and idiosyncratic for over a century seemingly cannot be obscured by clouds of construction dust.
The new documentary Dreaming Walls: Inside the Chelsea Hotel invites viewers inside the red brick palace to spend time with long-term residents who contribute to, and perhaps are, the essence of the Chelsea’s charm.

A crowd of 2,100 is expected for the artist Jeanne-Claude’s invite-only memorial service on Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But if a new cloud of volcanic ash heads toward Europe, that crowd may be slightly smaller.
“I do think maybe some of the Europeans will have trouble getting here,” said Elizabeth Broun, director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, who will speak at the service. “They would otherwise have shown up in droves.”
Jeanne-Claude, who died Nov. 18 in New York City at age 74 after suffering a brain aneurysm, was known for monumental works of public art created with her husband Christo. In 2005, they transformed Central Park with “The Gates,” a series of 7,503 orange nylon panels erected for 16 days. In 1995, they wrapped the Reichstag, the seat of the German Parliament in Berlin, in silvery fabric.

American artist Jeanne-claude has died from complications following a brain aneurysm. She was 74.
Jeanne-Claude and her husband Christo were famous for constructing dramatic installations around the world; including wrapping the Reichstag in Berlin, Germany with fabric, and hanging giant drapes across New York's Central Park - the latter was seen by more than five million people.
Announcing his wife's death in a statement on their website, Christo says he is "deeply saddened" but has vowed "the art of Christo and Jeanne-Claude will continue".
At the time of her death, the pair was in the process of covering the Arkansas River in Colorado and constructing a pyramid of 410,000 oil barrels in the United Arab Emirates.
The couple met in Paris, France in 1958, but has lived in New York for the past 45 years - and the city's mayor Michael Bloomberg has paid tribute to Jeanne-Claude's contribution to the Big Apple's art legacy: "New York City lost one of our great artists."
Her body will be donated to scientific research.

Note: A longer version of this interview was originally published during the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, where The Gates had its world premiere. In honor of Jeanne-Claude, who passed away today, we are re-running the interview. Rip, Jeanne-Claude. Tribeca Film: How did you did you decide to document the making of your work? And why is it so important for your work to be documented? Jeanne-Claude: All of our major projects have a film. The Maysles have done six of them. The Gates film is really in two parts. There are the early years 1979-81, and then the project was refused in 1981. But those early years were filmed by both brothers, David and Albert Maysles. The second part is filmed by Antonio Ferrera and Albert Maysles. [David Maysles passed away in 1987.] Christo: The story with Al and David is very personal. We met them so many years ago in 1961. New York -- Alive Mind has acquired the rights to "The Gates," Antonio Ferrera and Albert Maysles' documentary about the colorful art that graced New York's Central Park in 2006.
Alive Mind, founded by Richard Lorber about a year ago, will be released in New York theatrically in the spring and then available to educational institutions as well as other runs theatrically. Lorber said Tuesday afternoon that "Gates" would be released in a "prestigious venue" in New York but couldn't announce it right away.
The film documents the Gates, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's dressing of Central Park, from its inception to its $21 million execution that became a tourist attraction seen by an estimated 4 million people. What's remarkable about "Gates" is that Albert Maysles and his brother, David Maysles, began filming it in 1979 when the artists first pitched the idea to New York officials. David Maysles died in 1987, long before The Gates came to fruition.
