Two of this season’s most powerful and talked-about awards contenders, “Women Talking” and “Emancipation,” have generated discussion not only for their powerful subject matter but for the bold and unusual approach each film took to its color palette. Their subject matter and scale might be different — “Women Talking” is an ensemble piece representing a wide variety of points of view that takes place largely in one location, while “Emancipation” is the inverse, an individual character study set against the backdrop of the Civil War — but they share a desaturated look in which the filmmakers drained so much of the color from the imagery that they could almost be in black-and-white. In both cases, there were carefully thought out reasons behind the decision to bring color in in highly targeted, limited ways; IndieWire talked with the cinematographers behind both films to get two different perspectives on how and why the choice of desaturation was made.

Call this "My Five Minutes with Harvey," that's Mr. Harvey Weinstein -- a great producer and a surprisingly good man! I interviewed the guy who changed the way we view independent movies via his Miramax banner (with brother Bob Weinstein) for his entertaining and thought-provoking film, .My Week with Marilyn..
Based on two books by Colin Clark, .My Week with Marilyn. takes a snapshot of the icon while making the 1957 film, .The Prince and the Showgirl.. The glorious Michelle Williams embodies Marilyn Monroe, Kenneth Branagh stars as Sir Laurence Olivier, and Eddie Redmayne is Colin Clark. The film is told from his perspective, but it.s Williams. who will receive all the honors for her honest portrayal of Monroe. She.s at once vulnerable and strong, petulant and pleasant. Williams deserves a Best Actress nomination, and yes, perhaps, the Oscar itself! She.s long overdue!

It's highly unlikely that you're going to see any new nuclear power plants built any time in the future, given the now worsening situation at Fukushima. But knee-jerk reactions to the accident are not what's really to blame for the inevitable decline in nuclear production. Even before this month's nuclear disaster in Japan, the economics of nuclear power were bleak. It didn't seem that way on the surface--62% of the public supported nuclear energy according to a Gallup poll from last year, and Obama planned to dedicate $54.2 billion to building new nuclear plants (that plan is now in question). But according to at least one expert, the nuclear industry never had a chance.
Mark Cooper, a senior fellow for economic analysis at Vermont Law School's Institute for Energy and the Environment, discussed his findings about the economics of nuclear power in a testimony this week before the Standing Committee on...

Imogen Poots. We just love saying that name. Say it with us now ... Imogen Poots. It's kind of fun, right? Maybe it's because "poot" is slang for a slow quiet fart. Who knows? It just makes us giggly. In any event the stench of poots will act as garlic soon in the new upcoming vampire flick Hello Darkness.
The movie, coming from Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, has been described as a "genre-bending, kitchen-sink vampire movie with a potent love triangle at its beating heart" and stars Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots (pictured right), and Julie Christie. Dig on the plot crunch below and look for more soon!
Synopsis
Mark Cooper is an ordinary working-class man who became a vampire. He reached his prime in the early Sixties and, as a result of his conversion, never left it. Eternally young, he is the Angry Young Man preserved in amber. He lives in Newcastle,...

A title we haven't reported on since 2008 is finally moving into production. Hello Darkness is set to star Dominic Cooper, Julie Christie and Imogen Poots. The latter just wrapped work on Fright Night 3D . Here's a lengthy synopsis we got our hands on long ago. Mark Cooper is an ordinary working-class man who became a vampire. He lives in Newcastle, a town famed for its drunken excess, providing ideal feeding grounds. But the accidental death of a girl ends with a manhunt for a "Vampire Killer." New York - Comcast Corp. has boosted its political donations by more than half since the cable giant starting seeking regulatory approval for its proposed acquisition of a 51% stake in NBC Universal, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.
From December's deal announcement through August, contributions from Comcast’s political action committees to federal candidates and political parties amounted to $1.1 million, up from $682,450 in the same period two years earlier, Bloomberg said, citing Federal Election Commission data.
Ninety-one of the 99 House members and three of the five senators who wrote to the FCC in support of the big media deal received donations from Comcast in the current election cycle, sometimes within days of the letters to the FCC, Bloomberg said.
"That's buying political favors," Mark Cooper, research director of the Consumer Federation of America, which has consistently opposed the merge, told Bloomberg, whose parent has also filed papers opposing the deal.

Nuclear power advocates have a new weapon against detractors who claim that there isn't enough uranium to support a growing nuclear habit. A report (Pdf) released yesterday by the MIT Energy Initiative claims that there is plenty of uranium for nuclear plants--if we know how to use it.
In the past, researchers focused on building "fast spectrum" plutonium-breeding reactors that recycle uranium fuel. But so far, this method has proved uneconomical. MIT explains:
The new study suggests an alternative: an enriched uranium-initiated breeder reactor in which additional natural or depleted (that is, a remnant of the enrichment process) uranium is added to the reactor core at the same rate nuclear materials are consumed. No excess nuclear materials are produced. This is a much simpler and more efficient self-sustaining fuel cycle.
There's also an added benefit: These reactors don't contain enough separated plutonium to breed nuclear weapons, creating an automatic safeguard against terrorism.
