October 20th is yet another stellar week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, all leading up to our favorite holiday: Halloween. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. And as if that’s not enough, Scream is also busy with two more great releases this Tuesday as well—Bordello of Blood and The Larry Fessenden Collection.
Kino Lorber is reviving another cult classic on Tuesday too—The Oblong Box—which is based on the Edgar Allan Poe tale and co-stars two cinematic legends, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. For those of you Back to the Future fans out there (and really, who isn’t?), Universal is giving the series a few special releases in time for the film’s 30th anniversary and,...

Today we are talking to one of Broadway's best baritones all about his accomplished career in musical theatre that began nearly 20 years ago with a memorable turn in Miss Saigon, the thoughtful and debonair Matt Bogart. In addition to looking back at his arrival on Broadway during the mega-musical era, Bogart also comments on subsequent starring roles in Broadway productions ranging from Elton John and Tim Rice's Tony Award-winning Aida to Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy's The Civil War and far beyond. Additionally, Bogart sheds considerable light on projects he has participated in over the years in regional productions and workshops, including The Baker's Wife, Camelot, Ace and more. Most importantly, Bogart offers the full 411 on this weekend's hotly anticipated evening of music from famous rock concept musical Chess and clues us in on what we can expect from the starry evening, directed by Scott Coulter. British writer, director and producer Jordan Barrett offers up Exodus (2011), a new dramatic short film starring James Hedley and Lawson Hind. Barrett, whose previous credits include the short films Per Mare, Per Terram (writer/director/producer) and Ash Wednesday (writer/producer), delivers a sharp sliver of a story that has the potential to be an even more intense feature film, with an ending as appropriately abrupt as it’s beginning.
Exodus opens much like an episode of a J.J. Abrams television series. The audience is thrown into the middle of Jacob’s (James Hedley) current dilemma, as confused and disoriented as the character himself. Jonathan Armandary’s score is powerful and dramatic, building suspense… and then goes silent, only to be broken a moment later by the harsh, jarring static of a mysterious walkie talkie left with Jacob in the small, enclosed room.
Barrett.s story, only 14:33 in length,...

Once in a blue moon, a movie comes along that provides like no other. With the upcoming DVD release of Slime City Massacre right around the corner, I thought now would be an excellent time to look back at Greg Lamberson’s 1988 flick that started it all – Slime City. Put on your raincoats, my friends, because things are about to get messy.
Jason Bene: Although Slime City is a low budget film, it is quite ambitious. Where did you find the funding to make this cult classic?
Greg Lamberson: My producing partners (Marc Makowski and Peter Clark) and I put up about one third of the $50,000 budget ourselves; we bugged friends and family for another third, and a foreign sales rep named Alexander Beck put up the remainder. It was a different time when we started, because video was huge and no-budget films sold well. But by the time we finished, the bottom had dropped out of that market. So in one sense,...
