An open letter signed by 214 filmmakers has called on the Toronto Film Festival to drop longtime sponsor Royal Bank of Canada (Rbc) for financing oil projects on Indigenous lands and in Bipoc communities.
“Multiple leading Indigenous and Bipoc organizations and nations have denounced the bank’s indiscriminate enabling of projects on their lands, which they argue fail to respect their fundamental rights,” the letter signed by directors like Vincenzo Natali, Zach Lipovsky and Andrew Currie and addressed to TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, stated.
The letter is also signed by a host of Canadian and international film creatives, including film directors, editors, festival programmers and cinematographers. Their letter was timed for the opening of TIFF, where Rbc has been a key sponsor for 16 years and this year is sponsoring the Los Angeles Times studio for celebrity interview, Rbc House, a venue for TIFF partners, and a festival party for The Black Academy on Sept.

DC really do know their audience. Every time I think I’ve had enough of these Dark Multiverse books, they stick out one that makes me act like someone propping up the bar at the local. ‘Go on, then, just one more’ When you’ve read as much of DC’s output as me down the years, from the late 70’s onwards remember, then you are a sucker for nostalgia or revisiting stories and times that you connect with. DC have cleverly tapped into that with Dark Multiverse takes on things like Knightfall, Death of Superman, The Judas Contract, Blackest Night, Infinite Crisis among others. I can’t tell you how excited I am for the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths one. Fanboy explosion time. So, this time round we have Flashpoint, another major DC event.

Speaking as a, ahem, more mature fanboy I have got quite jaded of late with all the crossovers, mega events, ‘end of everything you know’ type stuff. I have been pleasantly surprised then by the fact I have really enjoyed DC’s Year of the Villain event. Just when you thought that everything that could be done with Lex Luthor had been, we have been introduced to Apex Lex (I love that name just too much), a supercharged villain for a supercharged event. Lex has been given the gift of near omnipotent power, and has been dishing out gifts all over the place, giving villains new powers or enhanced ones to take down their heroic adversaries once and for all. It’s been great fun to read. This One-Shot now sees Lex take centre stage, after...

In the process, they rehash old arguments, bring up their differences, and reveal previously hidden emotions, all while flashbacks detail how Romy got to this place. The 15th anniversary celebration of the Whistler Film Festival wrapped Sunday night, living up to its title as ‘Canada’s coolest film fest’ by hosting more premieres, filmmakers, industry executives, and celebrities than ever before, including unique experiences from films, music and parties to high adrenaline races.
The Whistler Film Festival’s Pandora Audience Award went to British-American romantic drama "Carol," directed by Todd Haynes from the screenplay by Phyllis Nagy (Variety 10 Screenwriters to Watch class of 2014) starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, which received its Canadian premiere at Whistler. The Wff Audience Award runner-ups were "The Legend of Barney Thomson," character-actor Robert Carlyle's first theatrical feature and directorial debut, which received its North American premiere at the festival, followed by Ricardo Trogi’s mid-life crisis dramedy, Quebec film "Le Mirage," the highest grossing and most popular Canadian film of the year so far. The Wff Audience Award is a non-cash prize presented to the highest-rated film as voted by the audience.
Paul Gratton, Director of Programming had this to say about this year’s event: "We were very fortunate to open this year's fest with the Canadian premiere of "Carol," a film we are convinced will be a major contender in this year's awards season race. The festival took off from there, with many sold out screenings, packed and newsworthy industry sessions, and over 450 guests who made a point of trekking out to beautiful Whistler to support their films and talk business with the high-level movers and shakers also in attendance. 2015 represented another step forward towards making Wff the coolest festival in the world. Can't wait 'til next year.”
Total attendance for this year’s fest was 13,233 attendees (a 18% increase over 11,273 in 2014) . This included 7,740 film-screening attendees and 3,533 special event attendees (Signature Series, Music Café, ShortWork Showcase, R-Rated Party, Awards Brunch, L’Oreal Men Expert Bobsleigh Race and Celebrity Challenge Ski Race), in addition to 2,530 Summit attendees. Several of the feature films were at or near capacity, including: "Born to be Blue," "Chasing Bansky," "Forsaken," "How to Plan and Orgy in a Small Town," "Legend,""Legend of Barney Thomson," "Numb," "The Lady in the Van," "the Steps," and "Trumbo."
Designed to facilitate international alliances and financial partnerships, Wff’s industry Summit program presented 30 interactive sessions that addressed a range of issues affecting the film, television, and digital media industry. Overall Summit attendance was at 86% capacity with 2,530 attendees (a 13% increase over 2,231 in 2014) including 855 delegates (on par with 2014). The Whistler Summit directly connects to Wff’s slate of project development programs designed to provide creative and business immersion experiences for 42 Canadian artists including its Feature Project Lab, Praxis Screenwriters Lab, Aboriginal Filmmaker Fellowship, and Music Café. Wff also collaborates with several industry organizations by hosting specific third party initiatives at the Whistler Summit including the Women in the Director’s Chair Industry Immersion, Women in Film & Television Film Market Preparation Mentorship, and the Mppia Short Film Award Pitch with the Motion Picture Production Industry Association and Creative BC. In addition to the
204 scheduled meetings (a 10% increase over 186 in 2014) that took place during the Summit, there was again a notable increase in unscheduled meetings that took place outside of scheduled blocks proving the festival remains an important place for the industry to meet and do business. Industry guests came from Canada, USA, UK, India, and China to participate, and included some of the top talent and executives in the business.
Film met music when Morning Show, one of the ten-featured BC artists from Wff’s Music Café, performed the live score for "He Hated Pigeons." Wff’s Music Café, which expanded to include two showcases over two days and featured five music supervisors, was well received with several deals in the works and over 526 guests in attendance.
Toronto’s first-time feature director Jamie M. Dagg’s "River" dominated Whistler prize-giving, winning for best Canadian feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay in the Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature presented by the Directors Guild of Canada – British Columbia. The jury also awarded French-Canadian actor Paul Savoie with Best Performance in a Borsos Film for his performance in "The Diary of an Old Man," as well as provided honorable mention for Rossif Sutherland’s work in "River" and Laura Abramsen’s roles in "Basic human Needs" and "The Sabbatical." Lastly, Best Cinematography in a Borsos Film, presented by I.A.T.S.E. Local 669, went to cinematographer Dylan Macleod for "He Hated Pigeons," directed by Ingrid Veninger. The Borsos Jury was comprised of three accomplished film industry artists that included the highly versatile director and screenwriter and WFF15 Alumni Carl Bessai ("Rehearsal), beloved actor and director Marc-André Grondin , and award-winning producer extraordinaire, Kim McCraw.
Other Whistler award winners included "Last Harvest" by first-time female director Hui (Jane) Wang that won the World Documentary Award presented by Tribute.ca with honorable mention for Brian D. Johnson’s "Al Purdy Was Here." The Best Mountain Culture Film presented by Whistler Blackcomb went to Anthony Bonello’s "Eclipse." The Canadian ShortWork Award went to "Withheld" directed by Johnathan Sousa, with an honorable mention to Amanda Strong and Bracken Hanuse Corlett’s Mia’. The International ShortWork Award was awarded to "Dissonance" by Germany filmmaker Till Nowak, with Langara College’s Canadian ShortWork Award for Best Screenplay given to Jem Garrard’s "The World Who Came to Dinner." Emily Carr University of Art and Design’s Lawrence Lam won the ShortWork Student Award presented by Capilano University Film Centre for "The Blue Jet," and Maja Aro won the Mppia Short Film Award for "Hoods" presented by Mppia and Creative BC, which consists of a $15,000 cash award plus up to $100,000 in services. The Alliance of Women Film Journalists (Awfj) Eda Awards gave Best Female-Directed Narrative Feature to Valerie Weiss’ "A Light Beneath Their Feet," Best Female-Directed Documentary to Hui (Jane) Wang’s "Last Harvest," with a special mention for Brian D. Johnson’s "Al Purdy Was Here." In addition, Céline Devaux’s "Sunday Lunch" took home the Best Female-Directed Short Award.
Receiving Wff’s Trailblazer Award and Tribute presented by Pandora, British-born Canadian actor, film producer, and film director Kiefer Sutherland discussed his extensive acting career spanning film, stage and television, with CTV Film Critic Jim Gordon , followed by the Western Canadian Premiere of his latest film, "Forsaken." Scottish-born Robert Carlyle , one of the most recognizable actors today, graced the Festival’s red carpet at this year’s Spotlight event as Wff’s Maverick Award honoree and sat down with Jim Gordon to discuss his bold choices that have led to the creation of some of the most dynamic, memorable, and beloved characters of our time before the North American Premiere of his directorial debut, "The Legend the Barny Thomson." One of Canada's hardest working and most accomplished character actors, Bruce Greenwood was the recipient of Wff’s Career Achievement Award, at the World Premiere of his latest film "Rehearsal," directed by admired Wff Alumni Carl Bessai.
The Whistler Film Festival proudly hosted the Variety 10 Screenwriters to Watch for the fourth consecutive year hosted by Variety Vice President and Executive Editor, Steven Gaydos .

The full lineup for the 2015 Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Programme has now been announced, adding to the previously announced slate of Canadian Films in the Programme. The films, as well as their official synopses, can be seen below.

Justice League of America #1
Written and penciled by Bryan Hitch
Inked by Daniel Henriques, Wade von Grawbadger, Andrew Currie
Colored by Alex Sinclair, Jeromy Cox
Published by DC Comics
Bryan Hitch’s trademark widescreen art style was built for stories with powerful, godlike characters like Jla #1. With the help of three inkers, his figures are detailed, yet expressive, and colorists Alex Sinclair and Jeromy Cox give the explosions, speed force crackles, and power ring flashes the digital sheen they deserve. Hitch has taken a page out of Grant Morrison’s epic run on Jla in the late 90s and given the Justice League of America a multiverse spanning threat to face in the long run that is integral to Superman’s mythos and legacy. In fact, Hitch opens the book with a potent double page spread of Earth exploding while a bleeding Superman floats in space before beginning his story proper.

Now the dynamic duo are back again in a special double-stuffed annual that features two ‘lost’ stories from Mulder and Scully’s earlier days. Luckily, for readers, this annual feels more like a season 3 X-Files episode than a season 9 one. If you’re an X-Files fan, then you know what that means.
The annual features two separate stories, with the first serving as the “monster of the week” tale. In it, a man is brutally murdered while on his amazing mid-Nineties flip phone. Leaving a pregnant wife at home,...

30th October & 6th November
Infinity (Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opeña) reached its penultimate issue this fortnight, which sets the stage its the climax. It’s already been announced that Marvel are launching a new book about the Inhumans next month, so we have an idea of what players will emerge in what kind of world after the events of this cosmic saga. If you’ve been following these posts, you’ll know that I’ve had both positive and confused opinions regarding the mini-series. The Avengers, most of whom are gallivanting in space, fighting back against the Builders’ hostile takeover of the universe, have left earth relatively unprotected. Meanwhile, purple space-bastard Thanos has destroyed the Inhumans’ city Attilan and defeated their king Black Bolt and is now set on finding and killing his son, who is in hiding. We get a kind of unsatisfying answer as to why exactly Thanos wants to do this.

X-Men Battle of the Atom #2
Writer: Jason Aaron
Pencillers: Esad Ribic and Giuseppe Camuncoli
Finishes: Andrew Currie and Tom Palmer
Colorists: Ive Svorcina, Andres Mossa, and Guru eFX
Publisher: Marvel
There are lots of cooks in the Battle of the Atom kitchen which has four epilogues and a total of ten pencillers/inkers/finishers working on the book. However, Jason Aaron is the master chef that gives this event a decent ending with consequences and not just a reset button. He is a great choice to write the conclusion to “Battle of the Atom” because he is the longest tenured X-Men writer and penned the Schism miniseries that started the whole Cyclops vs. Wolverine mess. X-Men: Battle of the Atom #2 does a great job tying up the storyline Aaron has been working on since Schism and also solves some the time travel dilemmas that Brian Michael Bendis introduced in All-New...

Wolverine and the X-Men #36
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli and Andrew Currie
Colorist: Matt Milla with Edgar Delgado
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The brilliant thing that Brian Michael Bendis did with All New X-Men is to make our presenttime the dystopian “Days of Future Past” for the original X-Men. Today is the future that young Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast and Iceman don’t want to see come to be. They’ll do anything to avoid the future they were brought to where Cyclops killed Professor Xavier. In Wolverine and the X-Men #36, the past and present X-Men have to fight alongside and against an X-Men team from the future who want to send the original X-Men back to the time they really belong. (Who says time travel stories aren’t confusing?) “Battle of the Atom” continues with Jason Aaron and Giuseppe Camuncoli stepping in to move the plot along while...

Reawakening
Sarah Bolger will co-star with Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass in David Gelb's "Reawakening" at Lionsgate. Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater penned the script.
The story follows a team of research students that discovers the secret to bringing subjects back from the dead — however, their actions result in a series of sinister consequences. [Source: Variety]
My A**hole Neighbor
Will Sasso ("The Three Stooges") has landed the title role opposite David Koechner in Andrew Currie’s suburban comedy "My A**hole Neighbor". Filming begins mid-August in Vancouver.

Exclusive: It’s good that Will Sasso has landed the title role in a movie, but I’m led to wonder why so many film companies press forward with naughty titles knowing full well they will never make it to the screen because newspapers and TV can’t run the advertising. Sasso, most recently seen as Curly in the Farrelly Brothers-directed The Three Stooges, has signed to star opposite David Koechner in director Andrew Currie’s suburban comedy feature My Asshole Neighbor. Sasso will portray Jerry, a loud, rude redneck who moves next door to a professional mediator Paul (Koechner), turning his world upside down. Once his private little patch of peaceful suburbia is invaded, the usually peace-loving Paul finds himself waging war on Jerry — which ultimately begs the questions, who’s really the asshole, and which sphincter will prevail? Produced by Mary Anne Waterhouse, the film will shoot mid-August in Vancouver.

Title: Barricade Director: Andrew Currie Being an unbridled fan of the horror genre, you understand that at any given time, you could end up watching one of the worst movies ever made. And after 85 minutes, Barricade proved this theory oh so true. Alright, it’s not the worst flick ever created. But it is definitely the worst of the year thus far. Just taking into account the broad strokes of what makes a competent cinematic product (horror or not), this has zilch. Sure there’s a slight interest of what is causing a raucous in a secluded cabin where a father and his children are vacationing. But that’s about the only [ Read More ]

*spoilers are below! Director: Andrew Currie. Writers: Michaelbrent Collings. Cast: Jody Thompson, Conner Dwelly, Ryan Grantham, and Eric McCormack. Tagline: "Lock your doors." Something, somewhere went wrong with the film Barricade. A lighting guy was fired or writer Michaelbrent Collings' script was not given a thorough read by someone. Because, this title seems to flip-flop about what its central conflict actually is. Also, this movie is overly dark. Whole sets and characters are hidden in shadows and hopefully, this technique was not intentional. Overall, Barricade is a lackluster showing with Eric McCormack's performance one of the few redeemable qualities in the film. The story involves a silly plot device, a fever. The film will try to make it seem like there is an external threat. But, the shady images and strange cuts are being caused by a high temperature. The big plot twist in Barricade is revealed! Turn the lights on already!

Have you ever heard someone say something they thought was incredibly clever, so much so that they wink at you and give you a little nudge afterwards, except it wasn’t clever at all? In fact, what that person said was utter nonsense and everyone else in the room is now a little bit worried the person might be coming down with something, or that in the span of the conversation this once normal person rapidly developed schizophrenia? That’s exactly the feeling you get from Andrew Currie’s thriller Barricade which features Eric McCormack as a father of two who takes his kids on a vacation to a secluded cabin (is there any other kind?) where strange events start to unfold.

You can’t blame people today for wanting to get away from it all. Sometimes nothing sounds more appealing than retreating to a remote cabin in the mountains for some rest and relaxation. Shut off the phones and other electronic devices, or just leave them at home. However, it you are going to do this, have a contingency plan for emergency purposes. You never know when a blizzard could keep you stuck in cabin, completely cut off from the outside world.
In Fido director Andrew Currie and WWE Studios' Barricade, Terrence Shade (Eric McCormack) has decided to get out of the city and take his two kids to a remote cabin (which is really a very large house even though people continuously refer to it as a cabin).
A year prior Terrence and young Cynthia (Conner Dwelly) and Jake (Ryan Grantham) lost their wife/mother. She desperately wanted to have...

A father’s quiet retreat to the woods with his two children turns into a fight for survival in Barricade. From the director of the zombie comedy Fido comes this scary-looking PG-13 horror film.
There is an interesting free app the makers of Barricade are using to market this film. It allows you to play with Augmented Reality technology.
Here’s a video showing how to trigger Augmented Reality for WWE’s Barricade:
For seasoned actor Eric McCormack, the role of Terrance Shade was one of the most challenging of his career. Appearing in virtually every scene, it was both a physically and emotionally demanding role for McCormack. As a busy psychiatrist, Terrance is struggling to adjust to life as a widowed father whose main concern is the safety and well-being of his young children. The children, as well, must come to grips with having lost their principal caretaker,...

Barricade
Directed by Andrew Currie
Screenplay y Michaelbrent Collings
2012, USA
WWE, or World Wrestling Entertainment, isn’t just about wrestling anymore, as evidenced by their frequent forays into film producing over the last few years. They’ve ramped up their movie distribution with WWE Studios; last month, their film The Day was released, the first from WWE to not feature any WWE wrestlers. This week, their newest film, Barricade, comes out direct to DVD, with an impressive, cool-sounding, and eye-catching cover using technology called the Augmented Reality experience, meant to bring the intensity of the film to life.
Eric McCormack, of Will and Grace and the current TNT drama Perception, stars in Barricade as Terrance Shade, who’s trying to balance his professional life as a psychiatrist and personal life as a widowed father. He and his kids decide to spend the holidays in a mountain cabin, to both get...

Word has come from the great video gods in the sky that WWE Studios' new film Barricade is set to make its DVD premiere on September 25th! Yep, that's next week! Short notice, we know, but ghosts have a habit of showing up unannounced.
Fido director Andrew Currie helms Barricade for WWE Studios with "Will & Grace" star Eric McCormack toplining the supernatural thriller from writer Michaelbrent Collings. Barricade marks the first original production from WWE Films to not feature one of their wrestling superstars in either a starring or major supporting role.
“One of the interesting things about Barricade,” notes director Andrew Currie, “is you are never really sure what’s real. So that becomes really exciting.”
Synopsis:
A holiday in the mountains is an opportunity for the Shade family to accept their tragic loss and start anew. Little do they know they’ll all be tested in unimaginable ways.

As if! Let's face it, man. If ghosts want in, they'll get in. That is, if you don't pour salt all around the perimeter of your house and entranceways like doors and windows and such. See what we learn from watching "Supernatural?"
