Few parts of this world have contributed as much to the filmic language as Romania. As singular a national voice and aesthetic as they come, Romanian cinema has become a launching pad not only for some of modern cinema’s most entrancing filmmakers, but also some of the most exciting explorations of a culture that few have much genuine knowledge of. Be it the typically chilly photography or the even more isolating sense of dread many of their dramas have, or even the dry nature of their comedies, Romanian cinema is in a golden age, and has spent the last decade leading world cinema. And now one of this country’s great smaller scale film festivals marks a decade itself, as the 10th edition of Making Waves: New Romanian Cinema is set to get under way. The 65th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (November 6-14) offers busy industry programme including works in progress and Crossroads co-production strand.The 56th Thessaloniki International Film Festival kicks off today with the Berlin prizewinner Victoria by Sebastian Schipper.
The festival closes Nov 14 with the Cannes awarded My Golden Days (Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse) by Arnaud Desplechin, who receives an homage, enjoys a full retrospective of his films and will deliver a masterclass.
Also receiving homages are veteran Romanian director Mircea Daneliuc and Greek master cinematographer Nikos Kavoukidis, accompanied by tributes to the 70 years of Greek animation and to the recent Austrian cinema.The late Belgian director Chantal.Akerman is receiving a special homage with the presentation of her 2011 film Almayer’s Folly (La folie Almayer).

Rams wins Special Jury Prize and Audience Award, The Treasure picks up Best Romanian Film at 14th Transilvania International Film Festival in Cluj
Juan Schnitman’s The Fire has won the top prize at the 14th Transilvania International Film Festival (May 29-July 7).
The Argentinian relationship drama, which received its world premiere at this year’s Berlinale, won the Transilvania Trophy and a €15,000 cash prize at the Cluj-Napoca event.
The Special Jury Prize, worth €1,500, and the audience award for one of the 12 first or second films by their directors in the international competition, went to Grímur Hákonarson’s Rams.
The Icelandic film won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section last month.
The most popular film overall at the festival was Operation Arctic by Grethe Bøe-Waal from Norway, one of the countries in Focus at this year’s Tiff, along with Argentina.

After covering the posters for the very first and the current New York Film Festivals, I thought it might be fitting, in this last year of Richard Peña’s tenure as Program Director and Selection Committee Chairman of the festival, to gather all the posters from Peña’s very first Nyff, 24 years ago.
In the current edition of Film Comment—an essential souvenir of the history of the festival to date, complete with a list of every feature film to have played the festival in its 50 years—Gavin Smith writes that “The 25-film lineup of the 1988 Nyff was partly a reflection of the decade’s drift and uncertainty—two came from Nyff veterans (Sergei Paradjanov, Marcel Ophuls), two were post-Glasnost rediscoveries (Andrei Konchalovsky, Larissa Shepitko), and nine were bets that didn...
