The only jury trial over the senseless slaying of Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke is now set to begin June 25 in Los Angeles. A judge set the date for Corey Walker, the sole defendant charged as an adult in the 2020 murder, at a court hearing on Friday, Rolling Stone has confirmed.
Three other defendants, including the 15-year-old shooter, were charged as juveniles. The eldest of the juveniles admitted to voluntary manslaughter and home invasion at a hearing last April. The youngest defendant admitted in May that he pulled the trigger in...

An Academy Award nomination wasn’t on Sterling K. Brown’s bingo card for 2024.
In fact, when he heard the news, albeit a bit delayed, on Jan. 23, his response, he tells THR, was, “Well, I’ll be damned.”
Winning an Oscar, however, was always a dream of the actor’s and part of a long-term goal of one day becoming an Egot. That desire grew out of his winning three Primetime Emmy Awards, first in 2016 for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie for his portrayal of Christopher Darden in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, again in 2017 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for his role as Randall Pearson in This Is Us, and, most recently, in 2021 for outstanding narrator for Lincoln: Divided We Stand.
“After getting a few Emmys or whatnot, you realize, all right, that’s a quarter of the way to the Egot,...

Dear fans, please stop yelling “Randall!” at Sterling K. Brown whenever you see him walking down the street. That’s a reference, of course, to the actor’s Emmy-winning role as Randall Pearson on the hit NBC drama “This Is Us,” which ran for six seasons.
“It’s funny, people would be like, ‘Yo Randall!,” he tells Variety. “And now they’re like, ‘Is Randall on ‘Solar Opposites?’ It’s ‘Sterling,’ God dang it! Listen, I never want people to not know that I played the character. But if and when I reach the point where people stop yelling ‘Randall!’ it would be Ok. Because it’s not my name. It’s Sterling. And to be seen for a body, instead of a character, feels way better.”
On this episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Brown discusses his role as a gay surgeon in Cord Jefferson’s satirical film “American Fiction,...

O.J. Trial Flashback: Christopher Darden Launches Bid For L.A. Judgeship With Backing From Lance Ito
Former O.J. prosecutor Christopher Darden has received the backing of retired Judge Lance Ito in his run for a seat on the L.A. County Superior Court, Darden’s campaign announced today.
Darden and Ito are well known for their roles in the televised 1994 O.J. Simpson murder trial, but they have a longer history. Previously, Darden and Ito worked together as prosecutors in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in what was then known as the Hardcore Gang Division.
Darden, 67, has been an attorney for more than 40 years, and worked as a county prosecutor for 15 years. He is best known for serving as a lead prosecutor in the Simpson case, which was presided over by Ito.
That case was not only a mainstay of ’90s news programming, it was also fodder for a pair of award-winning 2016 screen projects: the Oscar-winning documentary O.J.: Made In America, in which Darden declined to participate,...

Crime shows can take on many forms. There are procedurals, shows like "Homicide: Life on the Streets" and "Law and Order" (and its endless spin-offs), and then, there are the gritty masterclass dramas, shows like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos." Some favor the process, some the outcome, though all abound with the kind of detached criminal activity audiences fervently eat up. Just look at "Breaking Bad's" 16 Emmy wins.
"NYPD: Blue," "Hill Street Blues," "Criminal Minds," "CSI," and the like endure because they're accessible. They're fun. They're mainstream. Crime dramas like "Better Call Saul" are critically acclaimed and instantly recognizable. However, some crime dramas slip through the cracks. The John and Jane Does of crime shows, the ones that, for one reason or another, never quite found their audience. Whether they were canceled too soon, premiered during "Game of Thrones'" triumphant reign, or featured a misstep or two that alienated huge swaths of their audiences,...

Chris Rock is getting slapped back once again.
On Sunday, the comedian performed a set in Phoenix, where, according to the Los Angeles Times, he explained why he turned down hosting the next Oscars with a joke about Nicole Brown Simpson.

Referencing being slapped by Will Smith, Rock joked that going back again to host would be like asking Brown Simpson, late wife of O.J. Simpson, “to go back to the restaurant” where she famously left her eyeglasses before she was killed.
Twitter users called out Rock for joking about a murdered woman.
@chrisrock spends way too much time punching down on women. It wasn't the first time he said nasty crap about Jada Pinkett Smith, and it isn't the first time he made vile remarks about Nicole Brown Simpson. (a murdered woman) I'm done with this pos.

Brown as the pioneering lawyer Scipio Africanus Jones, who risked his life and career to defend the Elaine Twelve — a group of 12 Black sharecroppers sentenced to death for allegedly being involved in the murder of a white man during the Elaine Massacre of 1919 in Arkansas.
George Tillman Jr. (“The Hate U Give”) is attached to direct, with 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen on board to produce. It’s been so long since FX’s American Crime Story debuted (Obama was still president!) that it’s easy to forget how much trepidation surrounded that first season, The People v. O.J. Simpson. The O.J. trial was a circus at the time it unfolded. Producer Ryan Murphy’s track record seemed even more fragile in 2016 than it does now, circa the death rattle of Glee and misfires like Scream Queens. And the casting felt odd in so many places: David Schwimmer as Kim Kardashian’s dad? John Travolta...

At the 2015 Emmys, host Andy Samberg joked that he always knew Uzo Aduba would be the new Ed Asner. His theory was confirmed later that evening when she joined him as the only two actors to win Emmys in comedy and drama for the same role. And now she’s continuing to follow in not only his footsteps but that of his “Mary Tyler Moore Show” co-star Cloris Leachman as well, becoming the third performer to win Emmys for acting in comedy, drama and limited series/TV movie.
Last week, Aduba nabbed the Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress statuette for her performance as Shirley Chisholm in the FX miniseries “Mrs. America.” She took home her first Emmy in Best Comedy Guest Actress for her turn as Crazy Eyes on “Orange Is the New Black” in 2014. Let's be honest, this list is entirely subjective.
As one person, I could only watch so many shows and a lot of what others consider the best are getting left in the dust.
Just for the heck of it, I even added two shows that never get any love. One is a procedural that still holds a special place in my heart, and the other is an international show from Ireland.
It's hard to pick one show to be the very best, especially when the top three listed below are all spectacular. If I could have done a top three, they'd be on it.
This list focuses on shows that made such an impact that they won't be forgotten long after the decade ends.
As such, here are my picks for the best of the decade.

We're running down our favorite shows of the decade! In addition to our favorite action/adventure series and favorite procedurals, and relationship-focused programming, and supernatural series! Now, let's take a look at limited/anthology series!
Here is a reminder that we have almost two dozen favorites lists, and since we couldn't showcase every show on every list, we parsed them out a bit to make it more fun.
And these lists are not in any particular order. They're in the order the entries were received by TV Fanatic staff, so don't read into them!
To qualify, a show that began in another decade had to be airing during the decade, run a larger number of seasons from 2010 through 2019 if it started before 2010 or run the entire decade. Here we go!
The Kids Are Alright - ABC (2018)
The premature end of this series was one of the biggest disappointments of the decade.

Sterling K. Brown earned his fifth consecutive Emmy nomination this year, his third in a row for playing Randall Pearson on “This Is Us.” The actor previously won in 2016 for his role as Christopher Darden in “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and followed that up with a win for “This Is Us” in 2017.
Brown recently spoke with Gold Derby contributing writer Kevin Jacobsen about Emmy love for “This Is Us,” Randall’s emotional journey with Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) in Season 3 and what’s ahead for Season 4 of the NBC series. Sterling K. Brown continues his Emmy streak this year, bringing his total nominations to five, his third in a row for playing Randall Pearson on “This Is Us.” Brown won his first Emmy in 2016 for playing Christopher Darden in “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and immediately followed that up with another Emmy win the next year for “This Is Us.” The celebrated actor admits in our exclusive interview that Emmy nomination morning “never gets old,” and was even happier this year to see two previously unacknowledged co-stars get their first bids this year — Mandy Moore (as Rebecca) and Chris Sullivan (as Toby). Watch our video interview with Brown above.
As happy as Brown was to earn his fifth Emmy nomination, he admits he was “giddy for my other castmates,” noting, “For Mandy and for Chris, that was huge. I was so happy for my mama. I was so happy for my brother-in-law.

“At heart, I’m a dude from South Central Los Angeles. We roll the way we roll because we had survival tactics — we had to learn how to adapt. That’s just me.” — John Singleton (1968-2019)
Sometimes the label of trail-blazer is too easily tossed around. But as an African-American who hailed from South Los Angeles, Singleton broke down several barriers when he became the first black filmmaker — as well as the youngest person at age 24 — to be nominated for a directing Academy Award. His 1991 debut, the inner-city drama “Boyz n the Hood,” arrived the same year that motorist Rodney King was severely beaten by Lapd officers during his arrest for fleeing the police that would lead to riots after the cops were acquitted the next year.

Brown stars as Randall Pearson on This is Us, a role which earned him an Emmy award for outstanding lead actor in a drama series, along with a Golden Globe, becoming the first African American actor to win his category in the award show’s 75-year history. Sterling K. Brown’s acting trophies come from portraying kind-hearted good guys: criminal prosecutor Christopher Darden on “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” and Randall Pearson, who grew up as the lone black person in his household on “This Is Us.” But the actor told IndieWire he is grateful for chances to “show a slightly different color” this year: He played Wakanda’s traitorous prince in “Black Panther,” an assassin in “Hotel Artemis,” and a dentist with a rap sheet in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” one of his two Emmy-nominated performances this year (along with his network series).
The mean streak continues in “The Predator” (September 14), which premiered its first footage Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con. Shane Black’s sci-fi ensemble features Brown as Will Traeger, an alien technology expert through his Project Stargazer. Studying artifacts from past predator attacks, Traeger is amassing all the knowledge he can about the creatures.

The television academy’s acting branch has a love affair with Ryan Murphy productions, which earn multiple Emmy nominations for their performances year after year. “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Murphy’s “American Crime Story” anthology series, now enters the Emmy race and could dominate the Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor category just like “The Normal Heart” and “The People v. O.J. Simpson” did.
Having multiple nominees from the same series or movie can yield mixed results. Before Murphy began his anthology empire Mike Nichols‘s “Angels In America” scored four out of the five available slots for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor in 2004: Justin Kirk, Ben Shenkman, Patrick Wilson and Jeffrey Wright were joined by William H. Macy (“Stealing Sinatra”). Macy was unable to stop the “Angels In America” juggernaut, so Wright took home the Emmy for playing Belize and Mr. Lies, the...

Upfronts Week means a glorious celebration of the new shows we can look forward to premiering this fall or later in the year. It also means a glorious opportunity to judge the shows in question, thanks to the trailers that are launched online.
Reviewing a show based on a trailer is a technically dicey proposition, which is why officially what we’re doing here is evaluating the trailers for each show. After all, communicating a premise and a raison d’etre is tougher than you might think within the span of three minutes or less — which is why we herald the trailers that do so well, and worry about the trailers that fail to excel at capturing our interest.
Below are IndieWire’s ongoing reviews of every trailer to debut…some of which do a better job than others at selling their shows.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Season 5, Episode 11, “The Box.”]
Jake Peralta, Andy Samberg’s renegade goofy police officer on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” is a character that has always been built on intuition and a sharp appreciation of action movies. The cop movies Peralta grew up idolizing often lead him astray, but there’s always something in his approach that pays off at the end. This week’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” may have referenced “Die Hard,” but this bottle episode benefited from having its own Hannibal Lecter. And it needed the perfect actor to play the man behind the perfect crime.
Enter Sterling K. Brown. In a role that cements him as one of the most versatile TV actors working, Brown anchored one of the best “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” half hours in recent memory, providing the ideal foil to a tandem interrogation from Peralta and Captain Holt (Andre Braugher). Will Michael Stuhlbarg earn his first career Emmy nomination for “The Looming Tower”? He co-stars in the Hulu limited series as Richard Clarke, the real life chief counter-terrorism adviser on the National Security Council in the years leading up to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. This role follows an awards season in which the actor achieved the rare feat of appearing in three Best Picture nominees: “Call Me by Your Name,” “The Post” and the eventual winner “The Shape of Water.” But Stuhlbarg himself wasn’t nominated. Emmy voters may want to make it up to him.
It’s perhaps surprising that Stuhlbarg hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar yet given his roles in numerous Oscar contending films including “A Serious Man” (2009), “Hugo” (2011), “Lincoln” (2012), “Blue Jasmine” (2013) and “Arrival” (2016), in addition to his three nominated films from 2017. O.J. Simpson won’t ever be charged again for killing Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Double jeopardy rules would prevent that, as the former football star was famously acquitted of the murders in 1995. But in Sunday night’s Fox special “O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession?,” he makes a pretty solid case for why he ought to be behind bars.
The story of the Brown Simpson and Goldman murders has been fairly well covered through the years, including the recent FX series “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” and ESPN’s doc “O.J.: Made in America.” But “The Lost Confession” digs deep into Simpson’s take on his tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife — and along the way, provides a stunning case for motive, something that a prosecution team could easily use if they were able to try him once again for murder.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday or Wednesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is your favorite moment from a true crime series? This is the whole true crime genre that includes docuseries, scripted reenactments (a la “American Crime Story”), and even spoofs (“American Vandal,” “Trial & Error”).
Soraya Nadia McDonald (@SorayaMcDonald), The Undefeated
I’m not sure if I can pinpoint one particular favorite moment from “American Vandal,” but I do so appreciate its dedication to sending up contemporary conventions of true crime, especially the way it pokes at the method of storytelling that “Serial” and “This American Life” rely on so heavily. I’m especially tickled by the voiceover narration, the spot-on rhythm of the delivery.

After two Emmys and two hit shows, “This Is Us” star Sterling K. Brown has reached the point in his career where he gets to be selective in the projects he joins. And if he has his way, a reunion between Brown and his fellow “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” star Sarah Paulson appears inevitable.
Speaking beforehand at the IndieWire Honors event last week, Brown said he’s been talking to “American Crime Story” executive producer Ryan Murphy about potentially joining the anthology series’ third chapter, “Katrina.” Paulson is already on board.
“That needs to happen,” said Brown, who played Christopher Darden opposite Paulson’s Marcia Clark in “People v. Next up, he’s on the inaugural roster for the first-ever IndieWire Honors, which aims to recognize talent who thrive thanks to their own creative independence. And Brown isn’t taking his own rise lightly.
