It's the end of an era.
With Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 20, we saw a significant chapter close for this refreshing, conscientious, and inspiring series.
Sadly, not only did the series finale mark the end of Good Trouble, but it also meant the last chapter of The Fosters franchise closed.
The series' end leaves a massive void in the television landscape for similar series that combined a found family element with a timely exploration of social issues while bending genres.
We've lost something special, and that's a sentiment we unpack in our Good Trouble Series Finale Review.
But TV Fanatic had the pleasure of speaking with co-creator, showrunner, and EP Joanna Johnson.
She chatted about ending a decade-long journey, the unexpected cancellation, and the impact Good Trouble leaves behind.
If you haven't watched the series finale already, be warned that there are spoilers below!

To borrow from Davia, it's the end of an era.
With a heavy heart and the taste of bittersweetness, with Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 20, we not only said goodbye to the series but also marked the end of a franchise.
As a result, this unplanned finale had double the impact, as characters we've experienced for an entire decade signed off, presumably for the last time.
It's never easy to say goodbye to a series that has made it this far. In an industry where we frequently see series get the boot before it can even get into telling its stories, Good Trouble making it five seasons is a remarkable feat.
And even the diehard, most dedicated fans of this series often agree that the series was due to get wrapped up sooner rather than later.
However, it doesn't make this loss any less impactful, nor the fact that we essentially...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the series finale of Freeform’s Good Trouble.
Good Trouble has officially taken its final bow.
The Freeform series ended Tuesday night after five seasons, concluding more than a decade of television telling the stories of the Adams-Foster family and those closest to them. In some ways, Good Trouble ended exactly how it began — with Callie and Mariana.
Maia Mitchell rejoined Cierra Ramirez one last time for the finale, in which the residents of The Coterie find out the building is being sold and they’ll all need to move out. As they gather for a final Coterie dinner and rooftop hang, everyone reminisces on all they’ve gone through together. Callie and Mariana certainly have more than their fair share of trials, tribulations, and celebrations to reflect on.
“They’ve been working together for over 10 years, since they were 17 and 19,” showrunner and...

You can never go wrong with moms.
It's always a delight when Lena and Stef guest star in an installment, and Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 17 gave us some family moments between the Adams-Foster parents and the Hunters.
And the hour also saw Mariana and Joaquin doing the opposite of what Callie told them to do. Go figure, right?
Picking up where things left off with Alice and the Ferret trio, things weren't going well between Morty and Maury, and predictably, it was because the latter was hurt that Morty never told him he was gay sooner.
It's not uncommon for people in Maury's position to think this way and feel as if not knowing someone they love to their core is a personal affront.
He felt as if their whole friendship was in question if Morty could keep something so monumental from him.
It's a generally human reaction to situations like this,...

Mariana may finally be onto Silas.
Yes, the Silas saga was featured again during Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 14, as the hour provided us with some updates on the case and placed Mariana and Joaquin back in one another's orbit.
And hey, we're not mad at that because it's always a delight to see Bryan Craig, and it's only fair that they revisit Joaquin and Mariana's connection after all that "Eviana" goodness.
But the hour also saw things heat up for Gael and Jay, much to our delight, while things sort of cooled off with Davia and Dennis.
But most notably, this installment marked Cierra Ramirez's directorial debut, and she did a tremendous job.
It's always lovely when an actor gets behind the camera because they bring forth their skills and knowledge of the characters.
Some of the strongest scenes that wonderfully highlighted this were directly at the Coterie. Homage...

Something about Eviana's nostalgia can get you in the feelings every time.
Mariana's storyline is that sweet treat in Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 13 that we longed to return to as we indulged in another perfunctory hour.
It blended nostalgia with a spark of hope amid Alice and Malika's career obstacles and triumphs, and besties Gael and Davia were influenced or inspired by new individuals in their lives.
In short, Mariana's simple enough arc of navigating her new partnership with Evan as Co-CEO of Speckulate while quietly unpacking and potentially reigniting how their dynamic has shifted was what buoyed a run-of-the-mill installment.
And the switch-ups in storylines and character focus felt a bit closer to what we've come to expect from the series than not.

A show of hands; how many of us are hanging in there for all things Mariana Adams-Foster?
Despite everything that happened on Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 12, it's been more evident than ever during this fifth (and bittersweetly final) season that Miss Thang is the lynchpin of the series.
And when storylines have to stray from her, it's becoming increasingly difficult not to distract oneself with the phone.
It's not that Good Trouble has become unwatchable.
But there is some redundancy to some storylines, others that feel as if we're circling the drain and running out of steam, and sadly, with the awareness that the end is near, there's an antsiness for the buildup to a worthwhile end, and as of now, things are simply falling short.
The beauty of this hour was knowing that it was Sherri Saum's directorial debut, and it's pleasing that she got to cut her...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Thursday’s episode of ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise.
The shakeups never truly end on Bachelor in Paradise.
Last week’s episode ended on a cliffhanger with Charity about to give Eliza the tea on Aaron and his ex (or exes?). Eliza is eager to hear Charity’s side of the story after Kat told her that she’d been warned to stay away from Aaron before heading to Paradise.
Well, turns out that Charity doesn’t really have anything bad to say about Aaron. She doesn’t think highly of his ex-girlfriend though. According to the former Bachelorette, she returned home from the show to find that she had gotten several messages from Aaron’s ex saying that they were still dating when he went on the show. With a New Year comes a triumphant return to The Coterie!
It feels like ages since we've tuned into Good Trouble, and all the fun, heartache, and shocking cliffhangers abound at The Coterie.
And we won't have to wait much longer before we can dive into a new season.
We only have to get past those pesky holidays.
Good Trouble will return with the second part of its fifth season on January 2, and there's so much to look forward to when it does.
For one, Cierra Ramirez herself will be directing during the second half of this season, which is a huge feat and such an accomplishment for an actress who continues to excel at her work.
The new promo teases teamwork, the series leaning heavily into its found family, and even actual family goodness when we glimpse Stef and Lena -- possibly at Callie's wedding reception!

Everybody better brace for impact, because things are only getting more tense on Bachelor in Paradise.

Finally, Tanner graces everyone with his presence and, thankfully, he pulls Kat aside right away. Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Thursday’s episode of Bachelor in Paradise on ABC.
Buckle up, folks. We finally have another rose ceremony in Paradise.
Five weeks in, and this is only the second rose exchange. The men are on pins and needles, since it looks like five of them are going home. As some of them make last ditch efforts to form a connection, I can’t help but wonder why Aaron S. didn’t leave with Sam when he had the chance. But, just as he and Sean are praying to the Bachelor in Paradise gods, the producers throw them a lifeline.
Sam Picco, from Canada’s edition of Bachelor in Paradise, is here on the beach and she’s going to be handing out a rose tonight.
Her entrance is met with some excitement and a lot of confusion, since no one has any clue who she is.

Good Trouble is producing all kinds of good drama these days, and Davia is at the center of some of it.
As we saw in Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 10, the midseason finale left the talented new lead of a play reeling from her co-star's inappropriate move on her while feeling uncertain about her role in the play altogether.
But one thing that has been fairly solid during Good Trouble Season 5 thus far is Denvia and the healthy place they've reached in their relationship.

But one thing that has been fairly solid during Good Trouble Season 5 thus far is Denvia and the healthy place they've reached in their relationship.
We were fortunate enough to speak with the multitalented, genuine star Emma Hunton to discuss Davia's arc, Denvia, body positivity, and more.
Check out our chat!
My first question is, really, why are men such men? Between Brayden, Dennis, and Ranjit's drama, it feels like Davia has her hands full. Poor Davia. All she wants to do is sing and perform.

Davia and Dennis need new friends.
Our gang faces some setbacks and hardships on Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 9 as Davia and Dennis realize they're not fond of each other's new friends (neither are we), Luca is at odds with his dance crush, and Malika may want out of politics.
And, for the angst lovers, we got some bittersweet developments with Mariana and Evan.
Does anyone else want to meet Jeet? He's godawful all around, and it's just such a monotonous waiting game for all of his actions and ick factor to botch something at the restaurant.
He's already doing a bang-up job of making Luca as uncomfortable as ever, nitpicking his every move and criticizing him. And Mable seems intuitive enough to know there's something off about the guy.
Jeet still acts like a frat boy. Davia wasn't wrong about that assessment of him, and it's hard to believe a...

The theme of the hour was along the lines of being vulnerable and being seen.
And for some of the characters, they desperately needed that, and it was commendable that Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 6 opted to touch on some of those things, especially with newcomers Luca and Joaquin.
It was also heartwarming to see Mariana get a win with Evan as everything around them falls apart.
Some of the storylines of the hour meandered a bit and weren't as interesting as others, and that can be the case in this series when it juggles so many characters they only sometimes know what to do with them.
As incredibly talented as Emma Hunton is, sometimes the musical aspects of this series can be too much or an acquired taste. And this time, it was easy to check out her storyline as a woman navigating the theater community and advocating for herself and her character.

Let's give it up for Queer Night, leading to some catharsis for Gael in many forms!
An outing with Malika, Gael, and Alice mostly proved fun for the trio on Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 5, revealing that Malika and Angelica still have fire chemistry that Malika isn't ready to give up on, and Alice needs to learn how to have a fulfilled life outside of Sumi.
And Gael needed a breakdown to have a breakthrough setting up the next phase in his life that also feels like a welcome home.
Malika's quest to reconnect with her friends is worth appreciating because the characters often feel so isolated from one another when they're deep in their personal lives.
But the whole concept of communal living in the first place is having this community, family that they can all lean on and spend time with whenever they please.

Mariana made a huge boss move, but she also made a phone call that will likely bring moms back for another visit.
It felt like it was one step forward and another backward for Mariana on Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 3 as she continued to be put to the test.
Meanwhile, Davia, Dennis, and Luca chase after their dreams but may come to realize that it's not an easy path.
Dennis and Davia have emerged from their sexy, hot love bubble a bit to expand into their individual storylines, which is great. Now, we get the best of both worlds with the two of them as a couple who can support one another in the way they had always done when they were friends.
It's the perks of having a relationship like theirs sparked out of friendship. We get all the best elements of Denvia at once.

Note: The following discusses spoilers for “Good Trouble” Season 5 Episode 2.
After the shocking “Good Trouble” Season 5 premiere revealed Evan as the unexpected shooting victim of Season 4’s tense cliffhanger, and previewed the long healing journey to come for Mariana (Cierra Ramirez), showrunner Joanna Johnson is lifting the veil on what the rest of the season has in store for the rest of the Coterie residents.
“We’ll continue to talk about the unhoused crisis in Los Angeles and dealing with our character of Luca (Booboo Stewart), who doesn’t have a birth certificate … [and] realized he’s not even a US citizen,” Johnson told TheWrap, adding that this season will see Malika (Zuri Adele) keep trying to try to get her Women’s Center off the ground for women that are impacted by incarceration, as well as touch on mental health struggles across the Coterie.

Mariana is in hostile territory!
Some more surprising developments emerged on Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 2, while we remain in the dark about other matters that have seemed pressing.
Catching up with Callie is enough to set the fandom ablaze, and the hour certainly made proper use of Maia Mitchell's guest-starring.
The series' tone has significantly shifted, something that we still get a sense of with the more solemn opening credits, the opposite of the happy-go-lucky diddly we've been accustomed to over the years.
The stories have been dark and bordering on melancholic, but they've given some light and peeks at the other side of the tunnel, which may be enough to strike some balance.
It feels promising that Alice's hour-long arc trying to figure out who dared to disparage her name as the housing manager at the Coterie had such a promising result.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the Season 5 premiere of Freeform’s Good Trouble.
Maia Mitchell has returned to The Coterie — but not under happy circumstances. The Season 5 premiere of Good Trouble ends with Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) and Callie reuniting in their old shared bedroom at the co-living space after Mariana spent the night at the hospital with her former flame (and boss) Evan Speck.
The episode picked up right where Season 4 left off, with Mariana trying to escape from a cult while saving Joaquin’s sister, Jenna. Joaquin (Bryan Craig) was tipped off that Mariana was missing by a concerned Evan (T.J. Linnard), who tags along to rescue the women. In the opening minutes of the episode, someone fires a gun in an attempt to stop the group from escaping, and the bullet hits Evan in the chest.
They rush him to the hospital, where Mariana spends the night with him.

Nothing is more disappointing than when a show we used to hold in such high regard diminishes in quality and appeal.
Unfortunately, plenty of series fit the bill in 2022; if nothing else, they gave us something to complain about and discuss.
From beloved medical dramas on life support or plain Doa to reality guilty pleasures that have become hellscapes, our TV Fanatic staff had some strong thoughts.
And we've compiled a list of series that fell from grace in 2022.
Check out this potentially controversial list and share your thoughts below!
The Flight Attendant - HBO Max
It's an example of a limited series that should have remained a limited series.
The HBO Max drama dug deeper into Cassie's relationship with her mother, featuring a guest-starring turn from the incomparable Sharon Stone.
Unfortunately, the second mystery wasn't strong, and I found myself rooting for every character but Cassie. Please let the show die.

‘Good Trouble’ Star Zuri Adele Breaks Down That Finale and Teases What’s Next for Malika in Season 5
After struggling to balance her professional political career with her activism, Malika (Zuri Adele) finally rediscovers her voice in the “Good Trouble” Season 4 finale.
In attending a protest to protect a community of unhoused folks from being displaced, she not only reignites her own passion for on-the-ground activism, she also encourages the city councilwoman she works for to take a stand as well. It’s a triumphant moment for Malika, who has been longing to be back on the front lines instead of sitting at a desk.
“It’s actually a major growth spurt professionally, and I really liked seeing her take charge,” Adele told TheWrap. “It makes me excited to fantasize about Malika having a lot of political power in Los Angeles.”

What is happening right now?
Mariana got lured into a sex cult on a bee farm with no escape route, Davia's romance with Asher got cut short with the arrival of his wife, and Isabella and Gael are now talking about giving up their baby.
It was so much to process on Good Trouble Season 4 Episode 17, yet it will likely have nothing on the season finale!
Tonally, the installment had a lot going on, and at times it gave you whiplash. But it's always fun when Grey's Anatomy's Chandra Wilson directs installments of Good Trouble.
Alice and Sumi's arc had two different tones when you considered the conversation pertaining to sexuality and shame versus the two of them stalking Georgia to get into her film.
When it comes to Alice's issues with talking about and exploring herself as a sexual being, there is so much potential and a great deal of important,...

Remember our first impression of Isabella? Well, it turns out that version never went away.
Whether or not Isabella would face jail time was only the tip of the iceberg on an emotionally wrought Good Trouble Season 4 Episode 15.
Things escalated in shocking ways between Isabella and Gael; Dennis showcased how incredible his personal journey has been and displayed his growth. Davia is a saving grace in Elliott and Asher's lives.
But let's delve into Mariana's love triangle first.
Things are shifting toward her personal and romantic life having all the drama, but that isn't to say there aren't complications at Bulk Beauty.
The girls are thriving, working well together, finding success, and having a nice rhythm. They landed an impressive account that changed the game for them.
But Zelda, who they thought would be an asset to take them to the next level, may become their downfall.

Jazmin is getting her happily ever after in this Thursday’s episode of Freeform’s “Good Trouble.” In a sneak peek, exclusive to TheWrap, the bride walks down the aisle, beaming with joy on her big day.
Set to an instrumental version of Camila Cabello’s “Havana,” the clip features Jazmin, played by “Pose” actress Hailie Sahar, smiling as she waltzes down the aisle in a beautiful off-the-shoulder wedding gown. As she’s walking, she pauses to put her hand to her ear before waving at the crowd, encouraging them to cheer for her and her soon-to-be husband, Spencer.
The camera pans, and we see the Coterie family — including Malika (Zuri Adele), Alice (Sherry Cola), and Dennis (Josh Pence) — beaming as they clap for her. Even though she doesn’t live at The Coterie, she’s always been part of the fray as Gael’s (Tommy Martinez) sister.

Some partnerships are truly thriving, and others are facing some serious tests.
Mariana and Joaquin continue to have a fun chemistry that works well as both a casual sex vibe and true sleuth buddies on Good Trouble Season 4 Episode 11.
Meanwhile, Isabella and Gael's relationship is constantly under strain or stress.
But first, let the record show, if it hasn't been abundantly clear already, that my whole heart belongs to Luca, and every second we spend with him is cherishable.
The series has always dealt with several topics and done so well. The show has had a string of compelling characters across its tenure. Luca is definitely one of them who grabs your heart and soul instantly.
You root for him so much, and it should've been obvious that someone who routinely expresses how hard it is to open up and trust good things would still have such reservations about his new place at the Coterie.

It feels so damn good to have Good Trouble back.
The Coterie Family Feels were in full swing on Good Trouble Season 4 Episode 10, along with so much delicious drama that we'll likely be glued to the screen for the remainder of the season.
The hour was sexy, heartfelt, emotional, funny, and surprising.
From the non-linear sequences to the slick camera shots and sequences, direction, and the kick-butt musical stylings, it was peak Good Trouble, and the hour didn't waste any time.
It doesn't seem like we'll be free of the messiness of this Mariana love triangle with Evan and Joaquin any time soon. While it shouldn't have been the least bit surprising that Evan would hold off on telling Mariana what was bothering him, it was still frustrating.
It's a classic case of needless drama and conflict because of an irritating lack of basic communication. Yet, it was understandable.
Communication isn't exactly Evan's forte,...

“Good Trouble” star Zuri Adele remembers how she felt watching Kerry Washington grace the small screen as Olivia Pope in “Scandal.”
“[It] changed my life to see a Black woman leading like that on television,” she told TheWrap during a recent interview. “I think the shows that impacted me the most were like the ensemble shows, particularly with Black people at the forefront, normalizing my experience rather than trying to fit myself into another experience.”
Adele was joined by several of her co-stars from the Freeform series for a chat with TheWrap ahead of the Season 4B premiere, including Tommy Martinez, Priscilla Quintana, Sherry Cola, Emma Hunton, Josh Pence and Cierra Ramirez. They agreed that, growing up, they were hard pressed to find characters on screen who they could look up to — a problem they’re trying to solve for future generations.
