With still a month to go before the July 22 release of Jordan Peele’s Nope, every new clip is an opportunity to overanalyze for hints about the auteur’s cryptic upcoming feature.
But the new behind-the-scenes featurette released by Universal on Wednesday doesn’t require much pause-and-rewind to grasp the point. The two-and-a-half-minute video features members of the crew — plus Peele and actors Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer and Brandon Perea — discussing the team effort of making the movie, which the filmmaker called “a bigger adventure” than his previous outings (his breakout Get Out was made for 4.5 million, with his follow-up Us on a 20 million budget).
“I tried to write a script I didn’t know how to pull off, and then assembled a team to help me pull it off,” Peele says in the clip. “Every single department is firing off these huge,...

The death of Freddie Gray on April 19, 2015, will likely be the subject of many future documentaries. When detailing Gray’s arrest at the hands of Baltimore police officers, and the spinal cord injuries that led to his passing a week later, many of these films will probably include the harrowing cell phone footage of Gray’s arrest that appears early on in “Baltimore Rising,” the new HBO documentary from actress Sonja Sohn.
For the rest of its 93-minute runtime, “Baltimore Rising” uses Gray’s treatment to examine the fabric of the city in the year that followed. Through highlighting activists young and old, as well as providing perspective from inside the law enforcement community, Sohn presents a view of Baltimore that has its share of division — but is made up of individuals trying to find healing in their own way.

In times like this it’s crucial to be aware. Not only of what is happening currently, but to be fully aware is to consistently remember what has happened in the past. “Baltimore Rising,” an HBO documentary film directed by Sonja Sohn, will illuminate the death of Freddie Gray and the aftermath in the city of Baltimore.
Premiering on HBO and HBO Now on Nov. 20, “Baltimore Rising” seeks insight in those with concrete ties to the city of Baltimore: the police officers, activists, community leaders, and gang affiliates. The film explores how to make change after the community had erupted into “deep divisions between authorities and the community — and underscoring the urgent need for reconciliation.”

Among the many insights into the system itself, the doc will spotlight key figures in the community, ones particularly invested in the reconstruction of the city.

Keith Davis and David Ruth couldn't wait to move their family into their new home. "When we drove through the neighborhood, we loved everything," says Davis, 36, who bought his home in Avondale, Pennsylvania, with his partner in October 2014. Before moving in, the couple of eight years spent $70,000 and over two months renovating. The landscape, electrical and septic work went off without a hitch, but a neighbor took umbrage when a surveyor was seen taking measurements for a fence the family intended to have installed. "A lot of other homes in the neighborhood have fences, so at the time I thought...

It looks like the White Rabbit on Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is getting a sexy, black rabbit wife in an upcoming episode of the ABC series. I’ve been a fan of John Lithgow, who voices the White Rabbit, ever since I was but a small boy, and I can say the same about the actress tapped to voice his wife. There shouldn’t be a single person who doesn’t recognize her name, whether you’re young or old. She’s been at work for a long time and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. Without further ado, I’m pleased to announce Whoopi Goldberg is joining the cast of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.
According to TVLine, Goldberg will make a vocal appearance during Episode 8, where she will be playing the White Rabbit’s wife, both as part of the current storyline and...

David Mitchell has spoken about his new BBC Two comedy Our Men. The actor and comic will re-team with Peep Show co-star Robert Webb for the series, which follows the lives and loves of the British Embassy team in Tazbekistan. "It's such a good subject," Mitchell told Reader's Digest. "We couldn't believe that something along these lines hadn't been written before." Mitchell will play Keith Davis, the newly appointed British Ambassador of Tazbekistan, while Webb is cast as Neil Tilly, Deputy Head of Mission. "Like a lot of things we do, it's exploring different attitudes to authority," (more)...

I'll be honest and admit I know little to nothing about Cloud Atlas. I know it's some kind of sci-fi epic co-directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Twkyer and stars Tom Hanks and Halle Berry and Hugh Grant and Keith Davis (!). Many people I've talked to who've also ready the book by David Mitchell have wondered how the hell the Wachowskis and Twyker plan on adapting the material for the screen. Well maybe these images will help us figure that out... Courtesy of Han Cinema, we have an...

Well, this is sure to stir the pot.
In a new book, Lapd detective Greg Kading has collected evidence to support his theory that Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and Suge Knight orchestrated the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls, respectively.
The book, titled "Murder Rap," claims that Kading has "extensive tapes and documents containing confessions from key players behind the alleged assassinations of Shakur and Smalls."
The book points the finger at the Lapd for failing to bring the murderers to justice, as the cases have seemingly gone cold. According to the book, gangster Duane "Keffe D" Keith Davis confessed to authorities in 2008 that in 1996, he was offered $1 million to kill Death Row rapper Tupac Shakur and Suge Knight by then-rival Sean Combs.
Suge Knight, of course, survived the killing with a bullet wound to the head. Six months later, Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace was dead.

Filmmaker Kasi Lemmons (Talk to Me, The Caveman’s Valentine, Eve’s Bayou) attended this year’s Sundance Director’s Lab as an advisor, and here is a blog report about her experience.
I’ve been back in Manhattan for a few days, but my head is still on the Mountain. I’m thinking about the fellows, who are shooting and editing their final scenes. The progress and maturity of vision that I witnessed while I was there was incredible. I saw the filmmakers grow and stretch and discover themselves in the process. The rigorous shooting schedule taught them how to organize their day so that they could get their shots, how to communicate with their crew and get deep and nuanced performances from their actors. There was very little time for indecision. The crews were fabulous, and the actors brought an incredible array of talent to the projects. The...

- Summer is a time for picnics, days at the beach, and Sundance's Director's and Screenwriter's Labs. Out of the eight announced projects attending the Director's lab, seven of them were part of the Screenwriter's lab back in January. The new name added to the lab process is a project from artist/filmmaker Tala Hadid and The Narrow Frame of Midnight. Among the four projects invited to the Screenwriter's Lab we find a familiar name in director (see pic) Todd Louiso (Love Liza, The Marc Pease Experience) and his latest project Hello, I Must Be Going. Following in a natural progression on the Sundance Institute's part to develop young filmmakers and help develop their projects, here are the lucky dozen participants who will have a chance to workshop their films before they go into production - and here is a list of the people who will be there to coach them.
