Happy Tuesday, dear readers! We have an eclectic home media release day today that features some truly great genre films from both the past and the present. One of my favorite movies of 2022 is Robert Eggers’ The Northman, and Universal is releasing the film on a variety of formats today. Ahead of the new season’s debut later this month, CBS Studios is bringing Evil: Season Two to DVD, and Lee Haven Jones’ The Feast is headed to both Blu-ray and DVD today, too. Synapse is showing some love to The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue with their brand new Special Edition Blu, and if you’re a Shaw Brothers fan, you’ll definitely want to pick up the Blu for Human Lanterns.
Other home media releases for June 7th include Dario Argento’s The Phantom of the Opera adaptation, Gore in Venice, Beyond Evil, House Squatch, Poltergeist 3-Film Collection,...

Giannetto De Rossi tragically, has left us, as a result of the same plague that has cut short the lives of many. He leaves behind a mammoth filmography which, with roughly 163 films, contains plenty of contradictions and surprises and further outlines the career of a true independent, a bona fide iconoclast, and the third generation of a family to leave a lasting mark on the film industry, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Camillo De Rossi, considered by many historians Italy’s first make-up artist, and his father, Alberto De Rossi. Giannetto, however, will be the first De Rossi to delve deep into the world of practical special effects, and his legacy lives on in the work of one of his two daughters, Lorella. To truly put into perspective the incredibly multi-faceted career of this giant, let us briefly go through a handful of the many diverse directors he...

With its revolutionary mix of shocking-for-its-time violence and sociopolitical themes, George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead quickly proved to be enormously influential with filmmakers around the world, and few were able to match its power like Jorge Grau’s The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue. Mixing a strong environmental statement with unforgettably terrifying set pieces, Grau’s film stands on its own as a horror classic, and now it’s been restored to its horrifying glory by Synapse Films in an exclusive new Steelbook release!
A strange twist of fate brings two young travelers, George and Edna, to a small town where an experimental agricultural machine may be bringing the dead back to life! As zombies infest the area and attack the living, a bull-headed detective thinks the couple are Satanists responsible for the local killings. When sharks became passé for Italian filmmakers, they turned their particular brand of aquatic horror towards its brethren—lest we think crocodiles don’t deserve their own bloody spotlight, we were bequeathed um, Killer Crocodile (1989), a fun Jaws homage with enough Italian charm to put it over. Needless to say, it arrives in a spiffy new Blu-ray from those purveyors of the weird and wonderful, Severin Films.
Fabrizio De Angelis’ (aka Larry Ludman) biggest claim in the horror world was producing some of Lucio Fulci’s biggest and well-known films; from Zombie (1979) through Manhattan Baby (1982) he helped Fulci realize his visions to worldwide success. The Possessed will be available on Blu-ray February 5th From Arrow Video
The Possessed is a wonderfully atmospheric proto-giallo based on one of Italy s most notorious crimes, the Alleghe killings, and adapted from the book on that case by acclaimed literary figure Giovanni Comisso.
Peter Baldwin stars as Bernard, a depressed novelist who sets off in search of his old flame Tilde, a beautiful maid who works at a remote lakeside hotel. Bernard is warmly greeted by the hotel owner Enrico and his daughter Irma, but Tilde has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Bernard undertakes an investigation and is soon plunged into a disturbing drama of familial secrets, perversion, madness and murder…
Co-written by Giulio Questi and co-directed by Luigi Bazzoni, The Possessed masterfully combines film noir, mystery and giallo tropes, whilst also drawing on the formal innovations of 1960s art cinema (particularly the films of Michelangelo Antonioni). A uniquely dreamlike take on true crime,...

“The boat can leave now. Tell the crew.” With these words, a horror classic was born. Zombie (1979) was the first Lucio Fulci film that assaulted my eyeballs, And it was the first zombie flick I ever saw. Heady stuff for a quivering ten-year-old, but it proved to be the perfect gateway to the splattery splendors of Italian terror, a door that will forever remain ajar.
Let me be as straightforward as I can: if you’re a fan of Fulci but haven’t caught this yet, you can forget about the surrealism of The Beyond (1981) or the Lovecraftian flourishes of City of the Living Dead (1980). This is Fulci driving a simple narrative right through the hearts of horror lovers everywhere, coming out the back bloodied and unbound, unapologetic in its mission statement to horrify and repulse. Mission accomplished.

Zombies. The damn things are everywhere now, the last 12 years filling the screens big and small , carried on the rotting backs of Shaun of the Dead and the Dawn of the Dead remake (both 2004). The Walking Dead is one of the biggest shows on TV, and films ranging in quality from great to Netflix saturate the market. But let’s go back to a time when the zombie film as we know it (the Age of Romero) was in its infancy. Jorge Grau’s The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (1974) acts as a bridge between two seminal George Romero films, Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (‘78), and rightly stands as one of the finer Euro horrors. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth the trip.

Special Mention: Gojira (Godzilla)
Written and directed by Ishirô Honda
Japan, 1954
Ishiro Honda’s grim, black-and-white post-Hiroshima nightmare stands the test of time. This allegory for the devastation wrought on Japan by the atomic bomb is quite simply a powerful statement about mankind’s insistence to continue to destroy everyone and everything the surrounds us. With just one shot (a single pan across the ruins of Tokyo), Honda manages to express the devastation that Godzilla represents. Since its debut, Godzilla has become a worldwide cultural icon, but very little is said about actor Takashi Shimura, who adds great depth as Dr. Yamane; his performance is stunning. Special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya originally wanted to use classic stop-motion animation to portray Godzilla, but time and budget limitations forced him to dress actors up in monster suits. Despite this minor setback, Tsuburaya’s scale sets of Tokyo are crafted with such great attention to detail,...

The Beyond
Directed by Lucio Fulci
Written by Dardano Sacchetti, Giorgio Mariuzzo, and Lucio Fulci
Italy, 1981
While he may not have the name recognition of George Romero or Wes Craven, Lucio Fulci has had a singular impact on the horror genre. And though his work doesn’t lend itself to the sort of pop culture familiarity that unites these and other more mainstream horror directors, what he did best within the genre, he did as well as any other filmmaker. His was a down and dirty horror: grisly, textured, elaborate, graphic. And arguably his finest achievement, certainly one that perfectly showcases his style and skill, is The Beyond (1981), out now on an extensive 3-disc collectors edition Blu-ray.
The Beyond begins in 1927 Louisiana, where the basic premise of portentous evil lurking near seven doors to hell is established. Upon one of those gateways sits an old gothic hotel, which in the present day,...

One of the most fondly remembered eras in fright-film history is the golden age of Italian gore – a prolific period that brought such directors as Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava and Lucio Fulci to international attention and acclaim. Spawning all number of surreal sub-genres, including black-gloved killer-thrillers and stomach-churning cannibal adventures, this is a time that continues to crib a fresh generation of fascinated fans.
As such, 88 Italian have announced the UK Blu-ray release Zombi Holocaust (1980) and Burial Ground aka Nights of Terror (1981) – a pair of plasma-packed pot-boilers that could only have been dreamt up during the bygone boom in Euro-terror eccentricity.
In Burial Ground, the carcass-crunching action comes thick and fast as veteran director Andrea Bianchi (Strip Nude For Your Killer) evokes the sinister spirit of Lucio Fulci and George Romero. In my slightly sordid past, I have been dared to do a number of things including drink a pint of scotch in just an hour, dance on stage with a male stripper named Turbo, and also watch Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox back-to-back before I knew anything about them. Out of all of these tasks, the cannibal films were the hardest to get through and resulted in more nausea than the scotch. In short, I have a thing about animals. I can watch the most extreme horror films where people are the victims. But show me a slightly sad puppy or a mildly inconvenienced raccoon, and I’m disturbed for the remainder of the day. Why? Animals aren’t acting, and in the case of these classic cannibal films, the animal deaths are all real. That said, I have an odd appreciation for these films simply for attempting to push the envelope of decency.

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

The House By The Cemetery
Stars: Catriona MacColl, Paolo Malco, Ania Pieroni, Giovanni Frezza, Giovanni De Nava | Written by Lucio Fulci, Giorgio Mariuzzo, Dardano Sacchetti | Directed by Lucio Fulci
Lucio Fulci sure had a way with films, especially his “Gates of Hell” trilogy. Arrow Video now complete their Blu-Ray release of the trilogy with The House by the Cemetery (the other two being City of the Living Dead and The Beyond) and what a release. With an excellent picture quality and a disk full of extras this could arguably be the best way to experience the film, other than on the big screen of course.

The House by the Cemetery starts off by throwing blood and gore at you then changes tone with a Shining style warning to a boy from a picture of a little girl at the window of the titular house not to enter it. In a...

Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery (Quella villa accanto al cimitero) is a wrap to a loosely connected trilogy of films regarding the boundaries between the living and the dead, and Catriona MacColl is in all three.
In The Gates of Hell, a priest’s suicide unleashes a zombie apocalypse. The Beyond is about an old estate in Louisiana, which is discovered to harbor one of the gateways to hell. And lastly, in this film, a family is haunted by the undead owner of their new home.
Catriona MacColl and Paolo Malco play a couple, Lucy and Norman Boyle, who move to a small town in Massachusetts so Norman can complete the research of a colleague who committed suicide. Naturally, the couple goes to live with their son Bob in the same house the man committed suicide in. The house was built and inhabited originally by a Dr.

It’s time for another update from our friends at Arrow Video, this time previewing their <ay 2012 releases which include the long-awaited Blu-ray release of the House By the Cemetary and the ArrowDrome release of The Exterminator.
The House by the Cemetery (Arrow Video) Limited Edition Blu-ray
You may have just mortgaged your life! Shock gore master Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery is one of the finest typically single-minded exercises in zombie terror. Its just a shame no-one told the Boyle family who move into a gothic style house (by a cemetery) with a bloody past and a guts spraying future, what is yet to come! You’d think they’d twig given the basement door is nailed shut that they should get the hell out. Instead they stay long enough to discover their zombified non rent-paying lodger, the cellar-dwelling, flesh-hungry Dr Freudstein and boy is he pissed!

Zombie , the audaciously disgusting spectacle from the late master of gruesome Italian horror Lucio Fulci, was made in 1979 and presented as a semi-sequel to George Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead from the previous year, (Dawn was released in parts of Europe as Zombie – Fulci’s film was known there as Zombie 2) though the films aren’t at all connected. Tisa Farrow and a group of vacationing tourists travel to an island where they find a doctor (Richard Johnson) who is attempting to cure a condition that reanimates the dead. Things quickly get out of control as undead Spanish conquistadors crawl from their graves hungry for human flesh. All this undead mayhem is highlighted by nauseatingly graphic set-pieces by make-up maestro Gianetto de Rossi. Zombie is an incredibly well-made shocker that was enormously popular worldwide and in many ways has aged better than the Romero film (it’s certainly scarier...

There’s just something sticky and icky about Lucio Fulci’s 1981 gorefest in Zombie, which is loosely a follow-up to the events in Dawn of the Dead. The gore is outrageous. The zombies are nasty decaying corpses. The women have nice boobs and big bushes, and of course: there’s a sequence that pits a zombie against a shark!
And, finally, Blue Underground is bringing this bad mama-jama to HD for the first time ever on October 25th.
Here’s the details:
In Italy, it was considered the ‘unofficial sequel’ to Dawn Of The Dead. In England, it was known as Zombie Flesh Eaters and banned as obscene. In America, it was called Zombie and advertised with the depraved tag line “We Are Going To Eat You!” Tisa Farrow (The Grim Reaper), Ian McCulloch (Contamination), Al Cliver (Cannibals), and Richard Johnson (The Haunting) star in this worldwide splatter sensation directed...

(As work on Owf goes on behind the scenes, look out for a few old favourite feature articles being reposted for your pleasure).
Though the walking dead may have joined the ranks of classic movie monsters, they don’t, let’s be honest, hold much in the way of personality. They lack the charm of the vampire, the pathos of Frankenstein or the strung out craziness of the slasher movie killer. They are lumbering, inarticulate and, well, a bit lifeless.
Yet occasionally a zombie comes along that rises above the marauding ranks. Here we acknowledge 10 of our favourites of the walking dead to have graced our screens;
10. Graveyard Zombie
…as seen in Night of the Living Dead (1968)
This was the one that changed everything. While previously zombies had belonged to Haitian voodoo, George A. Romero transported this undead ghoul right into the heartland of America. With sunken eyes and a death-white face,...

With Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter out now on DVD and Blu-ray, Luke caught up with acrtress Cécile de France to talk about the making of the film...
Cécile de France, an actress who burst onto the scene with an incredible performance in Switchblade Romance (aka High Tension), and now finds herself wondering about the afterlife in Clint Eastwood's latest directorial offering, Hereafter, out this week on DVD and Blu-ray.

Yes, usually I like to see the movie, because I don't have a problem with looking at myself. Also, because the film is very close to the script from Peter Morgan.

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.
Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.
Next year October needs to begin in August.
Human Centipede: First Sequence
Directed by Tom Six
Human Centipede: First Sequence (review) was a sensation ever since its first mention. Stephen Colbert even talked about it at the 2010 Emmys Awards broadcast! The premise cannot be simpler. Two pretty American girls are on a road trip through Europe.

Another day at FrightFest and another day of highs and lows… The day started off on a low, with me skipping out on the screening of Christopher Roth to catch up on work – which is a shame as I really wanted to see Giannetto De Rossi’s SFX work in the film. So the first film of the day was The Tortured. Not the greatest of starts, but at least I enjoyed what I saw – the film lived up to its name anyways. You can read my full review of the film here.
A quick break and it was back into the main screen for 13Hrs, a British werewolf movie that I didn’t hold out much hope for, and like F yesterday I found myself surprised at how much I really rather enjoyed the film – even if it was derivative, featured a story that had been done to death...

Just in time for Halloween, the viscerally frightening hit film The Blair Witch Project makes its Blu-ray Disc debut this October from Lionsgate. Yesterday saw the official announcement of the line-up for the London Film4 FrightFest 2010 and whilst the FrightFest gang had already announced Hatchet II, The Last Exorcism, Eggshells, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and we exclusively revealed the appearance of Burning Bright, and Red White & Blue at this years festival, there was still some surprises amongst the bunch.
So after reading up on each movie that is due to play the festival I thought it would be a good idea to breakdown just which movies I’m looking forward to seeing, and which ones I’m not… As always let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Highlights:
The real highlights for me this year include Simon Rumley’s Red White & Blue, the infamous A Serbian Film – which should test the FrightFest audiences metal! Of course I’m looking forward to Hatchet II – since when has Adam Green ever let FrightFest down?...

Chicago – The great cult movie studio Blue Underground continues their pattern of excellent Blu-ray releases for unheralded horror gems with the recent releases of the Lucio Fulci zombie film “City of the Living Dead” and one of the most underrated westerns ever made in “Django”. While they don’t have much in common outside of studio and cult status, both are worth a look.

One of the complaints raised at the special Fangoria 30th-anniversary panel at Spain’s Sitges international film fest (see last report here and go here for the fest’s official site) was the lack of Italian contributions to the current cinematic fright scene. The gruesome 1980s are long gone, where goremeisters such as the late Lucio Fulci ruled the scene. Italian horror directors find it nearly impossible to get their films financed these days, while the master, Dario Argento, appears to have lost his mojo (Mother Of Tears bombed in most territories, and advance buzz on Giallo remains dire).
“It’s very difficult to get horror movies made in Italy, which is why I moved to Bucharest,” says former Fango scribe Loris Curci, who graduated to producing movies in recent years. His efforts include the Ken Foree Croatian/Catalan/American zombie flick Zone Of The Dead, a Sitges premiere,...
