Title: Special Treatment Director: Jeanne Labrune Starring: Isabelle Huppert, Bouli Lanners, Richard Debuisne, Sabila Moussadek, Valerie Dreville, Mathieu Carriere French actress Isabelle Huppert, nominated for a record 13 Cesar Awards, has made a career out of playing nervy characters with all manner of sexual foibles or secrets. In “Special Treatment,” she’s a high-class prostitute with dormant issues fueling a desire for a career change. The eighth feature offering from cult filmmaker Jeanne Labrune, this generally well sketched and set-up drama cashes in its early intrigue, though, abandoning darker overtones for rather wan interpersonal revelations. Those seeking kinky erotic drama of the sort found in early David Cronenberg will be sorely disappointed. The story...

Special Treatment (Sans queue ni tête – a better translation might be Cock and Bull), by Jeanne Labrune, relies to a large extent on Isabelle Huppert’s superb performance as a high-class prostitute, Alice Bergerac, who acts out fantasies with her clients but becomes disillusioned after one turns violent. In parallel, we see a psychoanalyst, Xavier Demestre (Belgian actor-director Bouli Lanners), become disillusioned with his own life and split up with his wife. The parallels are obvious: Alice effectively provides sex therapy for men who can only get it up if she pretends to be a schoolgirl or demure housewife. Interestingly, it is sometimes not clear whether she is role playing or not (to the extent that the confused Xavier later asks: “Is this you?”). She is arguably more successful than the psychoanalyst, whose perceptive clients end up analysing him and one leaves him happy in the knowledge that he may...

Toasted by the Pialats, Godards, Chabrols, Hanekes and Claire Denis, almost in her fourth decade in front of the camera, in my opinion, Isabelle Huppert is perhaps the most versatile actress in film today. By the looks of the first set of stills below, I'd say there is no typecasting her. Special Treatment is being released in France at the end of the month of September, and just prior, is receiving a world premiere showing at Tiff. Directed by writer-director Jeanne Labrune, this stars the always peculiar Bouli Lanners in the co-lead. A domestic deal seems unlikely, unless this really goes off the deep end. Co-written by Labrune and Richard Debuisne, Sans Queue Ni Tête centres on Alice (Huppert), an independent prostitute who is tired of her job and plans to undergo psychoanalysis to find the strength to change her life. Meanwhile, psychoanalyst Xavier (Lanners) has just been left by...
