His famous radio character, Senator Beauregard Claghorn, was the inspiration for the Warner Brothers cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn.
He was best known as the blustery Southern politician Sen. Beauregard Claghorn ("That's a joke, son!") on
Fred Allen
's radio program in the 1940s.
Started out as a child actor in silent films, most notably appearing in
D.W. Griffith
's
Orphans of the Storm (1921)
.
Portrayed Senator Beauregard Claghorn and also was the announcer for NBC Radio's "The Fred Allen Show" (1945-1949).
