Given his origin as an American football coach in London, it should come as no surprise that three coaches outside the world of soccer (or Premier League football) inspired Ted Lasso. In his early appearances as Ted, first on the NBC Sports Network and then in his own Apple TV+ series, Jason Sudeikis milked humor out of the character's nature as a guy who was clueless about that other form of "football" and unqualified to coach it, since all his experience came from a stateside game with different rules.
In "Ted Lasso" season 3, we've also seen Ted draw inspiration from basketball, specifically, the triangle offense made famous by the Chicago Bulls. Sudeikis is no stranger to Chicago, having lived and performed improv comedy there early in his career. Small wonder, then, that it's a Chicago football coach and two basketball coaches who inspired Ted Lasso.

It seems like Mark Wahlberg and the rest of the Entourage gang may need to hug it out, as Jeremy Piven is saying he’s the major snag in a potential reboot. Wahlberg, whose exploits with his funky bunch (not that one) were a key inspiration for the story and characters, also served as an executive producer.
Speaking with TMZ, Piven (who won three Emmys for playing Ari Gold) said that if Mark Wahlberg can find the time to throw his weight and starpower behind an Entourage reboot, it will be a Tarvold-level victory for all. “If Mark and his team were really behind it, that would be some nice momentum…Listen, Mark wakes up, he gets about 11 minutes sleep. He wakes up and he prays, he crushes the weights, he never stops! So…when he comes up for air in a little crack of time, just make that call to HBO and everybody wins.

Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt are setting the record straight about the origins of "Ted Lasso." During a cast panel with Variety in celebration of the hit Apple TV+ show's third season, the show's co-creators were asked about the origin of the Ted Lasso character, and had a surprising answer.
Moderator and Actors on Actors host Jenelle Riley opened up the panel by asking about the inception of "Ted Lasso" as a character, referencing a story that's apparently been floating around the internet about co-creators and stars Brendan Hunt and Jason Sudeikis incorporating the character into sketch comedy early in their careers. "It's not true!" Sudeikis declared, before setting the record straight about exactly how the pair's early days working together at a theater in Amsterdam related to their eventual creation of the mustachioed Midwestern football coach.

The “Dark Side of Football” Season 1 participants would make a pretty darn good NFL roster – and the storylines should make for some entertaining TV.
The six, one-hour episodes of Vice’s “Dark Side of the Ring” spinoff will include an episode on Bill Belichick, another focused on the origins of the Oakland Raiders’ notorious reputation and a third that explores the league’s painkiller problem and the often tragic results of its unwritten rule to “play with the pain,” in the docuseries’ words.
And that’s literally just the half of it. Other subjects covered include violence among some hardcore fans, the pathetic (not last year!) Cleveland Browns, and one episode dedicated entirely to diva wide receivers, TheWrap has learned.
Participants interviewed for and appearing in the program include Chad Johnson, Mike Ditka, Plaxico Burress, Donte Stallworth, Jemele Hill, Bill Romanowski, Jim McMahon, Ricky Williams, Kyle Turley and Lincoln Kennedy,...

As Chicago deals with near-record cold weather as part of a Polar Vortex, with parts of the Midwest reaching minus 25 degrees, Stephen Colbert gave some sage advice for keeping warm on”The Late Show” Wednesday night. And he spoke the language too.
“Hey ‘dere. Chicagoans know that our cold is the worst, okay,” Colbert said, doing his best impression of former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka. “Here’s how to keep your Polish saa-sage from snapping off.”
Colbert sported a fake mustache straight out of the ’80s and put on a thick accent about how to brave the winter, not that Chicagoans aren’t used to it at this point.

A quarter-century ago, Kevin Costner hit a double-play, following up "Bull Durham" with "Field of Dreams" and becoming king of the sports movie. Twenty-five years later, as "Field of Dreams" marks its 25th anniversary (it was released on April 21, 1989), Costner is back with "Draft Day." The movie's about football, not baseball, and Costner's character plays in the executive suite, not on the field, but his mere presence still offers a reminder of great sports movies past.
And after all, isn't nostalgia a key element of sports movies? "Field of Dreams" makes this explicit -- we long for the sports heroes of our childhood, for a supposed long-gone golden age of our preferred sport, as a way of connecting with our past and bridging the generational divide that separates us as adults from our parents. Sports movies offer more than just the drama of winners and losers, or the journey from dream to achievement,...

James Franco and Seth Rogen have some competition in the form of Shannon Sharpe and Nick Mangold. The two football players also spoofed Kanye’s now-infamous “Bound 2″ music video in Pepsi’s Grammys commercial promoting the Super Bowl halftime show. In the commercial, football players ask why the forever-long Grammys don’t get a halftime show and then take it upon themselves to provide one. Deion Sanders breaks into autotuned song, Terry Bradshaw gives a boot-stompin’ number, and Mike Ditka rides a football-shaped wrecking ball. Maybe a halftime show performed by football stars isn’t a bad idea after all.

Former NFL player and coach Mike Ditka mocked Miley Cyrus by riding atop a giant metallic wrecking ball in perhaps the most popular commercial during Sunday night's Grammys. The ad for Pepsi featured several NFL greats, led by Deion Sanders, who begins the ad seated in the audience at the Grammys before rising to his feet to announce: "You music artists, you've always given football the best halftime shows. So tonight, football is paying music back." After Sanders breaks into mellow song, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw interrupts with an all-American country tune, but he, in turn, is

Pepsi debuted its latest "Halftime" ad early this week, during the 2014 Grammy Awards telecast Sunday (Jan. 26). The star-studded commercial is about sports figures "giving back" to music for all the great halftime performances the musicians always put on for sporting events.
Several players-turned-analysts make appearances, including Deion Sanders as an R&B singer (gotta love that auto-tune) and Terry Bradshaw as a country music star -- though they both released actual albums back in the day.
Also on hand are Shannon Sharpe as a rapper and famed Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka riding a Pepsi wrecking (foot)ball.
Other celeb cameos include Cassadee Pope, Prince Royce and "Dancing With the Stars" pro Mark Ballas. Who else did you spot?
And in case you missed it, Pepsi's other Super Bowl halftime ad is below.

Working on a Sunday can be exhausting. Just ask Mike Ditka, who seems to have fallen asleep during Espn's "Sunday NFL Countdown" on Dec. 29.
After noticing his co-host dozed off, his fellow analyst Keyshawn Johnson had to shake Ditka awake. Ditka did a little hop in shock, and got back into the swing of the show just in time to make the game picks for the day.
This sort of trouble staying awake isn't only something Ditka suffers from. Morgan Freeman also hilariously fell asleep during a live TV interview.

Gruff Mike Ditka, the former head coach of the National Football League’s Chicago Bears and a commentator for Espn, wishes he had called one more running play. Specifically, he said this week that he regrets not running against President Obama in the 2004 Illinois Senate race and called it “the biggest mistake I’ve ever made.” “Not that I would have won, but I probably would have and he wouldn’t be in the White House,” the NFL Hall of Famer told the Dickinson Press at an oil company event in Watford City, N.D. First-year Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman figures what better way to inspire his team than to invite back one of its all-time greats -- former Bears player and head coach Mike Ditka.
"It was hard standing up for two hours when I'm used to sitting on a [golf] cart," jokes Ditka to Espn, on his return to Halas Hall practice field this week.
"I thought it was a great place to start, somebody who knew as much about the Bears and the tradition of the Bears as he does," says Trestman. "The idea ... was to bring him by and see Halas Hall and the new facility and spend some time with our players and say hello to them. He graciously agreed to do that and we certainly appreciate the fact that he came out here today to be with us."
What is Ditka's advice for the current team? They have to work together.

In an economy where it's tough to launch a small business, reality TV is there to help. In its early seasons, Food Network's "The Great Food Truck Race" went to existing operations for its contestants, making it a competition among those who already had a level of success.
Last season, the show changed the ingredients, and the new recipe worked out so well that the producers decided to turn to it again in the new season, premiering Sunday, Aug. 18, on Food Network.
Chef Tyler Florence returns as host, as eight teams of cooks are sent on a 4,181-mile road trip from Hollywood to Washington, D.C., to serve customers and for the winning team to prove it has what it takes to win the food truck -- already constructed with a concept and menu developed by Florence, the producers and the contestants -- and a $50,000 nest egg to start a business.

Can you imagine what’d it be like if Mike Ditka or Bill Parcells jumped ship on the NFL and went overseas for that other sport called football? It would most likely be a disaster and end up like an SNL skit rather than a smooth transition. Lucky for us, Jason Sudeikis gave fans of the Premier League (which will begin broadcasting on NBC Sports this year) a look at how a coaching hire like that would unfold in the clip above....

Prometheus (20th Century Fox) Ridley Scott’s quasi-prequel to his 1979 classic “Alien” has an intergalactic exploratory team (Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba) arriving on a uncharted planet, where they discover what appears to be a dormant alien spacecraft and what might be the first discovery of intelligent life outside of Earth. Of course, everything goes straight to hell before you can scream “Don’t touch that egg!” Sumptuous visuals and strong performances from the cast (not to mention a nearly-perfect first half) can’t compensate for gaping plot and logic holes that nearly sink the proceedings in the film’s protracted second half. It feels as though some very crucial footage wound up on the cutting room floor. Perhaps, as with “Alien” and “Aliens” we’ll see a “Director’s Cut” of “Prometheus” arriving on DVD within the next year. In the meantime,...

Golfers love wine – after they are done golfing. While they are golfing, it’s beer. Those inconsiderate showoffs who can shoot in the 80s probably guzzle Gatorade, or Red Bull or something called “water.” Who cares what those inconsiderate showoffs drink, though?
Golfers love “Caddyshack,” too. Even non-golfers love “Caddyshack,” but let’s stay on the course. I was a golfer myself, once upon a time. I found that the “good walk spoilt” sentiment from Samuel Clemens was too true for me to continue. Reaching into the cooler on the golf cart was a lot more fun than reaching into my bag for a club. I tried carrying my bag, but if I’m to enjoy a walk in the grass, I don’t need a hundred pounds of clubs on my shoulder. Especially when I only use three of them.
And, to me, a walk...

On Super Bowl Sunday, the best and baddest of the professional football world will lay it on the line for the biggest of prizes. But only a select few will go on to achieve an even greater glory: movie superstardom.
Okay, the odds of anybody from the NFL rubbing shoulders with Daniel Day-Lewis is somewhat slim, but there have been several former players who have acquitted themselves well on the big screen.
Join us as we salute these gridiron heroes-turned-silver screen stars. (Pros only, please: Sorry, former college star The Rock.)
