“Yop,” “Unspoken,” and “Asma” look like potential standout titles at this year’s Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, still one of Series Mania’s industry centerpieces which in 2023 is shaping up in many ways to be a bumper edition.
Running March 21-23, the Forum hosts now a swathe of ever building industry initiatives at Series Mania, which unspools in Lille, northern France, over March 17-24.
450 projects from 66 countries answered the call for admissions, an all time record, said Francesco Capurro, head of the Series Mania Forum.
“We have more and more projects from outside Europe. An increasing number from Africa: Kenya, Senegal, Nigeria, which is very encouraging, as well as from other big markets outside Europe, like Canada, Turkey, Taiwan,” he added.
Reasons cut various ways for Capurro: “Series Mania is getting more and more well known, including outside Europe. The Lille-based event has also established highly productive partnerships with key industry bodies,...

Director Corrie Chen has hit a stride in her career where she is able to make projects she really believes in.
Tonight is the premiere of one such example in Sbs/Goalpost Television’s New Gold Mountain, with Chen having directed all four episodes.
Set in 1857 Ballarat, the mini-series looks at the gold rush from the perspective of Chinese miners, with the story unravelling around a murder mystery. The stellar ensemble cast includes Yoson An, Alyssa Sutherland, Christopher James Baker, Dan Spielman, Mabel Li, Leonie Whyman, Sam Wang, Rhys Muldoon, Alison Bell, Chris Masters Mah and Travis Cotton.
Sbs director of content Marshall Heald has called New Gold Mountain the broadcaster’s “most ambitious drama yet”, with producer Kylie du Fresne noting it draws inspiration from Deadwood. The series is dense in detail in terms of costuming and production design, and boasts a diverse cast of around 65 speaking roles, all in multiple languages,...

In Goalpost Pictures’ gold rush drama New Gold Mountain, Alyssa Sutherland plays a widow who overcomes the trauma of an abusive marriage and embarks on a quest for greater independence in 1850s Australia.
While it may be easy to classify her turn as Belle Roberts as a strong female character, the actress told If it was a description she was hoping to avoid.
“I like the attention we put on having much more well-rounded female characters but I get a little bee in my bonnet sometimes when all this focus gets put on these ‘strong female characters’,” she said.
“Women are just strong – that’s how it is.
“All the women in my life are very interesting and compelling people – it’s just taken a while to see the same thing on screen.”

‘The Invisible Man.’
Universal’s The Invisible Man is getting a second lease of theatrical life thanks to drive-ins and newly re-opened cinemas in Western Australia, Adelaide and Alice Springs.
Leigh Whannell’s psychological thriller was the top grosser last weekend as the top 20 titles rang up $456,000, a whopping 148 per cent up on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Including the Queen’s Birthday holiday in most states, nationwide takings totaled $514,000.
Whannell’s film starring Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer and Michael Dorman earned $66,000 on 10 screens over those five days in week 15, lifting the total to $8.06 million.
That means the movie co-produced by Blumhouse Productions’ Jasom Blum and Goalpost Pictures’ Kylie du Fresne has grossed $160,000 since cinemas shuttered in March, although it was released on Premium VOD on April 1.
Seven drive-in cinemas in Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Heddon Greta near Newcastle and Yatala in South-East Queensland are generating tidy sums.

Ben Grant.
The hardest part about the coronavirus pandemic for Goalpost Pictures was having to make one employee redundant and stand down another staffer, who was subsequently reinstated thanks to the JobKeeper wage subsidy.
The only full-time crew member who had been hired for its upcoming Sbs miniseries New Gold Mountain was also stood down but is getting paid via JobKeeper.
On the upside, Goalpost is working with Sbs and Screen Australia on a number of scenarios for back-to-work on the Peter Cox-created drama set in Victoria during the 1850s gold rush from the perspective of desperate Chinese miners.
“It was a very confronting period and we were in survival mode, but making content is still a viable business,” Goalpost MD Ben Grant told Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner last Friday in a webinar.
“We will continue to develop and make content that firstly we want to make.

Malla Nunn.
Goalpost Pictures has optioned the Detective Emmanuel Cooper book series from Australian/South African writer Malla Nunn.
The company plans a TV drama, titled Detective Cooper, with British/Australian writer James McNamara to adapt the novels together with Nunn.
Set in 1950s apartheid South Africa, the series will explore the unlikely investigative alliance Cooper – a damaged WW2 veteran-turned-detective – forms with a conflicted Zulu police officer who has the ability to communicate with spirits of the dead and a guilt-ridden German-Jewish doctor. Bound by loss and burning to do good, the friends defy a racist police force to find justice for the dead regardless of race.
“Malla Nunn’s books Detective Emmanuel Cooper are irresistible page-turners. The action is driven by murder, passion and corruption and the stories are layered with the moral ambiguities and the smouldering undercurrents of a racially divided nation. They are stories that have resonance...

Rosemary Blight, Kylie du Fresne and Ben Grant.
Goalpost Pictures partners Rosemary Blight, Ben Grant and Kylie du Fresne are busily progressing projects in development with local and international partners and are confident the cinema business will rebound after the pandemic.
Here are their joint responses:
Q: While it was disappointing to have Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man’s cinema run curtailed while it was earning hefty sums here and in the Us and the UK, the early release on digital platforms at least meant it is reaching a sizable number of eyeballs?
A: Absolutely! Universal were very quick to respond to the worldwide pandemic scenario and, while obviously we would all have wanted cinemas to remain open and it was thrilling to see Leigh’s movie sitting so high in the box office charts, we are heartened to know that the film is widely available to everyone in isolation.

‘The Invisible Man’
Last weekend was the worst of the year for Australian cinemas as Universal’s The Invisible Man and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog were the only titles to crack $1 million.
Still, who can blame people for shunning cinemas given virtually all the new releases had either flopped in the Us or were niche titles that earned modest sums?
Among the misfires were Warner Bros’ The Way Back, Disney/Searchlight Films’ Downhill, Mind Blowing Films’ Bollywood action thriller Baaghi 3 and Roadshow’s The Big Trip.
Universal’s Dark Waters and Umbrella Entertainment’s feature doc Honeyland had mediocre debuts.
The top 20 titles generated $8.8 million, down 13 per cent on the previous frame which had ranked as the lowest of the year, according to Numero.
Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man raked in nearly $2.2 million in its second frame, easing by a mere 13 per cent. The psychological thriller starring Elisabeth Moss,...

‘The Invisible Man.’
Leigh Whannell’s Sydney-shot The Invisible Man easily won the box office derby in Australia last weekend, matching its top-ranked Us debut.
Meanwhile Tony Tilse’s Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears had a mid-range opening although exhibitors are expecting a leggy run thanks to word-of-mouth.
Among the alternate content releases, Universal’s Les Misérables: The Staged Concert did Ok while Australian animated adventure The Wishmas Tree struggled against the third weekend of Paramount’s hit Sonic the Hedgehog.
The top 20 titles generated almost $10 million, 11 per cent down on the previous frame but 3 per cent ahead of the same weekend last year, according to Numero. Exhibitors say there is no discernible impact yet from the coronavirus.
Produced by Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum and Goalpost Pictures’ Kylie du Fresne, Whannell’s psychological thriller raked in $2.5 million on 322 screens for Universal, the best opening for an Oz title...

‘The Invisible Man’ (Photo credit: Universal Pictures).
Given that they appeal to very different audiences, the first-day ticket sales for The Invisible Man and Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears in Australia were very healthy.
Leigh Whannell’s Sydney-shot edge-of-the-seat thriller opened bigger yesterday, although the murder-mystery/adventure/romance staring Essie Davis and Nathan Page had already earned a hefty sum from paid prevews.
Produced by Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum and Goalpost Pictures’ Kylie du Fresne, The Invisible Man grossed $375,000 on 315 screens for Universal, tracking just below A Quiet Place’s first day.
Roadshow launched Every Cloud Productions’ movie directed by Tony Tilse on 376 screens, raking in $180,000 and $389,000 including advance screenings, outperforming the Universal release in some regional locations.
Both are set to generate very good business over the weekend, particularly as Miss Fisher’s more mature fans aren’t the type to rush out to see movies on day one.

Oliver Jackson-Cohen in ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ (Photo credit: Netflix).
Leigh Whannell has cast Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who stars in the Netflix supernatural drama series The Haunting of Hill House, as the lead in The Invisible Man.
Produced by Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum and Goalpost Pictures’ Kylie du Fresne, the horror movie inspired by the classic monster character starts shooting in Sydney this month.
Jackson-Cohen joins Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid and Harriet Dyer (The Inbetween) in the Universal Pictures film, whose plot is under wraps.
Deadline hails the casting of Jackson-Cohen as quite a coup considering Johnny Depp was originally in the frame to play the lead.
Whannell cast the English actor after being impressed by his performance as Luke Crain, one of five siblings who are haunted by memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it, in the Netflix series.

Johnny Depp was previously attached to star as the lead in what was once meant to be Universal’s Dark Universe of films, a shared universe of movies that incorporated new takes on Old Hollywood monster characters, with movies announced based on both “The Wolf Man” and “Bride of Frankenstein.” That franchise kicked off with the Tom Cruise vehicle “The Mummy” that also starred Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Exclusive:The Haunting of Hill House star Oliver Jackson-Cohen has scored the title role in Universal/Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man which begins production this month in Sydney, Australia.
That’s quite a casting coup considering that at one point during early development of this project at Universal, Johnny Depp was set to play the Invisible Man. Jackson-Cohen joins the already announced cast of Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Harriet Dyer and Storm Reid. We hear that the filmmakers were wowed by Jackson-Cohen’s turn as Luke Crain in The Haunting of Hill House. That Netflix series follows a fractured family as they confront haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.
Jackson-Cohen’s credits also include the BBC drama Man in an Orange Shirt, NBC’s event series Emerald City, the NBC series Dracula, and the ITV mini-series Mr. Selfridge. Feature credits are Paco Arango’s The Healer,...

Peter Templeman on set with Stephen Peacocke.
Director Peter Templeman rates Michael Lucas and Christine Bartlett as Australia’s pre-eminent creators of TV comedy-dramas.
So he jumped at the chance to serve as the set-up director of the duo’s Five Bedrooms, Hoodlum Entertainment’s 8-part series which premieres on 10 at 8.40 pm on May 15.
He could not be happier with the performances of the ensemble cast led by Kat Stewart, Stephen Peacocke, Doris Younane, Katie Robertson, Roy Joseph, Kate Jenkinson and Hugh Sheridan.
“Michael and Chris created totally real characters, each with a rich inner life and a back story,” Templeman tells If. “Working on the show was a great experience. We were spoiled for talent.”
Scripted by Lucas, Bartlett and Mithila Gupta, the plot revolves around five strangers, all misfits, who find themselves at a singles table at a wedding. After an excess of alcohol they decide the solution...
