Brendan Fraser and Adam Sandler first jammed together in the 1994 comedy “Airheads,” playing two members of a band so desperate to make it big that they hijack a radio station. The musically inept Lone Rangers — Steve Buscemi was the bassist — would soon be in high demand in Hollywood, but Sandler reveals in our conversation that he had to fight to get Fraser cast as singer Chazz Darby.
Back then, Fraser was best known for playing an unfrozen caveman in “Encino Man,” opposite Pauly Shore. Soon enough, his career exploded, with studio vehicles including “The Mummy,” “George of the Jungle” and “Bedazzled.” And to this day, Sandler, who’s at the top of his game as an NBA coach in Netflix’s “Hustle,” is still rooting for Fraser. “You crushed me,” says Sandler of Fraser’s comeback role as a 600-pound English teacher in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale.” Since the film premiered at Venice,...

Steven Spielberg and cinematographer Janusz Kamiński first collaborated in 1993 on “Schindler’s List,” and since then, Kamiński has been Spielberg’s go-to cinematographer.
“He’s got tremendous visual flair,” Kamiński tells Variety. “He’s very good with blocking scenes. There’s a great operator, Mitch Dubin, who has been also been in the mix for over 17 films. I’ll focus on lighting and the visual storytelling with some participation in the camera composition. Mitch does what he does, and it’s this great shorthand.”
When it came to their latest collaboration, “West Side Story,” Kamiński says the biggest challenge was establishing the style of the lighting. “If we’re doing glamour and beautiful colors, we should maintain that, right?” Kamiński says. “There was also the biggest challenge of maintaining continuity.”
With the film shooting on the streets of New York, Kamiński had to ensure the lighting during the major dance numbers such as “America” was consistent.

Whether it’s filming a major musical number or epic action sequence, camera operators are responsible for the media audiences consume.
Camera operator Mitch Dubin’s 17th film with director Steven Spielberg is the upcoming “West Side Story.” The musical presented Dubin with opportunities to harness new techniques, such as wearing an earpiece to listen to the score while filming.
“Normally, you take your cues visually, but in a dance film like [this] if I wait for the visuals of a dancer leaping in the air, I would be late,” explains Dubin. “I had to have the music to understand exactly when [to move and focus].”
Dubin, who has been recognized as Camera Operator of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement Award winner by the Society of Camera Operators, says the job requires “being in sync with the actors, understanding the emotional content of every lens [and] the storytelling perspective of every position.”

“I was very ambivalent and nervous about working during Covid,” says “Fargo” camera operator Mitch Dubin. He flew to Chicago mid-August to finish two episodes of the series’ new season. “I have to say though, I was a little relieved [once there].”
Working on one of the earlier projects to go back into production in the U.S., Dubin was on set as the industry was hammering out Covid protocols to be adopted across all productions. They were trying to figure out work-arounds and other practical ways to ensure crew and cast safety while still delivering the highest-quality work under restraints.
“It was a bit of a free-for-all,” Dubin says of stepping on a set in August. The production, however, adhered to what are now considered best-practices guidelines: regular Covid testing, daily temperature checks and extensive use of PPE, among others.

A reader, Dylan Toombs, passes along this video shot earlier this month at the The Banff Centre for Story Summit 2016 and featuring his interviews with three top Hollywood camera operators: Mitch Dubin (Saving Private Ryan, Bridge of Spies), Steve Fracol (Songs of Anarchy, Scandal), and Dave Thompson (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook). At the head of the video, Dubin offers perhaps the most concise description of the camera operator’s job that I’ve every heard, and the rest of the short, four-minutes-and-change interview contains other perceptive insights into how these three men view the nature and definition of their job.
